Father John s forum Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Come After Me, and I will Make You Fishers of Men Every encounter with Jesus provokes a response; the gospel for this Sunday (Matthew 4:12-23) shows a response of discipleship that is quick and decisive. Our own call to discipleship comes at baptism, but unlike the disciples in the gospel our response isn t usually so quick and decisive. We spend our whole life trying to see the great Light that is the Savior of the world. We spend our whole life passing from death (darkness and gloom) to living in the Light. We spend our whole life encountering Jesus, hearing his call, and working to be faithful in continuing his saving ministry. We practice following Jesus in the simple, everyday things that come our way: the friend who needs a listening ear, the elderly parent who needs a comforting phone call, the sick child who interrupts our sleep. Jesus invites us to turn from ourselves toward those in need, to turn from darkness to Light. Jesus invites us to continue his ministry of making his kingdom present in our world. The kingdom of God is not a place, but is the recognition of God s just and rightful rule over all creation. This is the same saving ministry to which Jesus disciples were called; it is our own ministry. It is fulfilled every time we bring Jesus Presence to those we meet in the ordinary circumstances of our daily living. (Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press, 2013) QUESTIONS TO PONDER: 1. Are you willing to follow Christ without counting the cost? 2. How are we called to fish for men/women today? 3. Have you ever encouraged someone to be a priest, deacon or religious sister? CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK January 26 - February 1, is Catholic Schools Week around the nation. Here at Holy Sepulcher we will celebrate our school with many activities throughout the week and we will commence our celebration today, with a special 10:30am Mass followed by a Free Pancake Breakfast at 11:30am in our School Cafeteria. An Open House will take place until 2:00pm. Celebrate Catholic Education by visiting our school and learning more about the great accomplishments of our students past and present! Parish Happenings Jr. Life to EDGE I am happy to announce that our Jr. Life Youth Ministry Program will be returning in February! However, this program will now have a new name and format. It will be called the EDGE program, which is coordinated through the national Life Teen Ministry. The EDGE program is a middle school (Grades 6-8) youth ministry program whose overall goal is to lead students closer to Christ and to start helping them to mature in their faith. This national program helps them to know Christ at this pivotal point in their lives so that when they reach high school they are already committed and want to learn more. The EDGE program is an incredible lead into the Life Teen Program and provides a smooth transition for our middle school youth as they move into high school. Our first gathering will be Saturday, February 8 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm (immediately following the 4pm Mass) in the Youth & Young Adult Center. Please come for fellowship and fun! Parents are encouraged to attend this first gathering. If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes. -St. Clement of Alexandria CELEBRATING OUR SCHOOL I would like to recognize our Faculty and Staff who serve our school so faithfully throughout the year. Their dedication to our students is overwhelming and I thank them so very much! Thanks to Sr. Anna Marie Gaglia, CSJ, (Principal); Anne Schratz (Kindergarten); Jeannie Schnur (Kindergarten Aide); Kim Connolly (1 st Grade); Ashley Blystone (2 nd Grade); Amanda Lauer (3 rd Grade); Debbie Todd (4 th Grade); Jennifer Blank (5 th Grade); Nancy Sippey (6 th Grade); Dorothy Johnson (7 th Grade); Richard Rechenberg (8 th Grade); Lee Holmes (Art); Judy Perry (Spanish); Janet Dineff (Music); Marilyn Rander (Library); Colleen O Hara (Admin. Assistant to Principal); Scott Carson (Maintenance); and Tom Mann (Maintenance). I would also like to thank our school parents and parish community for their continued support. We should be proud to have such a wonderful school in our midst. May God bless Holy Sepulcher School! Our Campaign for the Church Alive! Update It has been a few months since I last mentioned Our Campaign for the Church Alive!, however, pledges and payments continue to be processed. PAPER RECYCLE BINS Thank you for your continued donations of paper and cardboard to the Abitibi recycle bins of which 100% of the proceeds benefit the school. Often the bins are full. Please be considerate and do not put anything outside of the bins or overfill them. This overflow is not only unsightly, but blows away with the wind into neighboring properties. We are working with Abitibi to keep the bins emptied in a timely manner. Feb. 1, 4:00 pm Ministers of Communion L. Fey, L. Kessler, A. King, K. King, K. Lutzic, S. Pieto, R. Speck, N. Yarnot, Dcn.
