Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 13, 2017 Great story in Matthew s Gospel this weekend about the bold Peter, whose spirit turns cold as he looks away from the Master for just a second, and becoming frightened, sinks. Our hearts know that story so very well. Amen? So, what s it all about? It is about Peter, the rock, the leader of the Apostles, cracked by misunderstanding, doubt and fear. One moment he got it and in the next turns away and Jesus rebukes him. I may be going out on a limb here, but I know this reflects our (my) faith journey as well. In one moment all strong and defending the faith and being bold and within a split second, after some doubt or fear or misunderstanding creeps in we are the total opposite. In that moment, all the more we need to keep our eye focused on the Lord. Peter turned away for a split second and when he lost focus, he sank. So the words of the Lord are so right here, Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid! Obviously, we are being taught that when I do not take the time to focus on the Lord and when we (I) rely only on me; it is then that we feel most inadequate, alone and will fail and sink. Learn our lesson well today, dear friends. Well it s AUGUST and we are GEARING UP and MOVING INTO FALL MODE and that means programs and events and school and faith formation and learning and sports practices and events are ALL HERE! Keep your eyes open to the Bulletin, the website, newsletter and email about WHAT S HAPPENNING here at St. Mary! Tuesday, August 15 th, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary and our FEAST DAY at St. Mary Parish! This Holy Day of Obligation is a wonderful opportunity for us to profess our faith and belief and celebrate as this great family of God! The Vigil Mass on Monday, August 14 th, is at 7pm Monday with a dessert reception in the Fr. Garrity Center. Masses on Tuesday are at 9am AND 7pm. Come and Celebrate the Mother of God and our Patroness St. Mary. We want to officially WELCOME, John Mastandrea to our Church Staff this year as Adult Faith and Education Coordinator. This part-time position will place John as responsible for the coordinating various adult faith programs, like TMIY and Women of Grace, the KofC, RCIA, Liturgical Ministers Workshop, Cinema Nights, the Lenten Mission, teaching parents involved in the Sacraments year, among other programs and faith inspirational programs. Many will recognize John as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and Minister to the sick at Southwest General Hospital, a Friday 9am Mass Server, an Alumni Parent of St. Mary School, the coordinator of That Man Is You (TMIY), an officer in the Knights of Columbus Council 14416, among many other volunteer opportunities. John, along with his wife, Alane, and their two sons, John Paul and Joseph (St. Ignatius High School and St. Mary Mass Servers), have been parishioners since 2006. John is thrilled with the opportunity to help guide and influence us into a fuller, richer experience and closer relationship with Christ through the various Adult Faith and Education Programs that ARE TO BE OF- FERED this year at St. Mary and IN CONJUNCTION with our area Parishes! So WELCOME, John and here s to a GREAT YEAR! Faith! THANKS for your abundance in the Sunday collection! Peace and Blessings as we begin our 166 th year of Fr. John

Some families added personal notes with the bread and there were even pictures of grandparents and grandchildren absolutely having a blast together. So KEEP THOSE EMAILS COMING!!! We will do our best to accommodate your requests. Suffocated by things Here in America,... You can easily be suffocated by things. And once you have them you must give time to taking care of them. Then you have no time for each other or for the poor. You must give freely to the poor what the rich get for their money. Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987) Family Perspective Wedding Banns Cyril Michael Kleem & Melissa Vazquez August 19, 2017 Sometimes it isn t the troubles we face that make life hard; it s our fear and doubt that weaken our resolve. The gospel today recounts how Jesus calmed fears and encouraged His followers. We can trust the calming presence of Christ in our family life. Our families can be like Christ when we encourage those facing trouble.

Are you keeping your eyes open for what God is trying to teach you? I went to the Augsburg Summer Clinic in Dublin, Ohio, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I was able to learn from my two day musical retreat! Along with the usual free music and special meetings I attended on various topics, I experienced true compassion and selflessness at a cat café (of all places) that reminded me of how thankful I am for the good life and favorable opportunities I have been given. There are all of these little life lessons in the world, you just need to look! Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27. Bible Study & Faith Sharing Matthew continues with the words of the Lord as He approaches death. We need to be attentive to the words that we are meant to hear for our own sake. We deepen our faith through these reflections on the Word. Join us in the chapel on Tuesday morning from 11:00am-12:00pm. Our goal is to make the gospel come to life within our lives. Just bring your Bible and an open heart. Evening Bible Study is taking some time off and will not meet again until September. Watch the bulletin for the date of the first session. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday 12:30pm in the chapel, starting with Quiet Prayer. Quiet Prayer will be followed by the reading and study of Rhor s Everything Belongs as he helps to understand more fully the value and the graces of Centering Prayer. We will dismiss about 1:15pm. 12 Step Spirituality 12 Step continues its reflections on the Steps with Step 10. We meet in the chapel from 2:30pm until 4:00pm on Thursday afternoon. Join and see what you might have to offer.
