Minutes of Meeting held on February 20, 2013 Meeting was held at the Msgr. Kern Center (Gym) Saint Angela Merici Parish, Metairie, LA 70002, and hosted by Bishop L. Abel Caillouet Council 9007. Rosary was started at 7:45 PM The Warden checked all for their membership/travel card. Meeting was opened, with a prayer, by Metro President Donald Winchester at 8:05 PM. Thanks for the large turnout. President Winchester introduced Father Steven V. Bruno, Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Father Bruno spoke about Calling all 5 th Graders which is an annual event. This project was based on several studies that showed that most priests and religious first thought about their vocation at about age eleven. The Archdiocese of New Orleans will sponsor the Calling All Fifth Graders event, Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 8:45 AM 1:30 PM at Mount Carmel Academy, New Orleans. We anticipate that 1000 children will attend. The students will have time for prayer, fun, food and learning about church vocations. Priests and religious communities with a presence in the Archdioceses will be invited to participate. Archbishop Aymond will also be with us part of the day. We are asking for any monetary assistance that would help with expenses for the day and to provide drinks for the students and bag lunches (50) for the speakers and volunteers. Donations can be made to: Archdiocese of New Orleans Vocation Office, 7887 Walmsley Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70125. I would like to thank you for your long-standing support in fostering vocations. On another note, I would like to talk about Camp Abbey. On August 3 rd, 4 th & 5 th 2013 we have invited 5 th, 6 th & 7 th grade students to spend time at Camp Abbey. approximately 150 people including students and adults. What we would like it to have the Knights and other groups cook meals for the three days. There will be a total of six meals. This would be done on the Camp Abbey grounds. There is a commercial kitchen. However, you could bring your propane tanks and cook, for example, jambalaya or gumbo or anything you think the group would enjoy. Two more dates to remember is March 9 th. That is Abbey Youth Fest. May 18 th is the ordination of the deacons. Thank you for inviting me to talk to you. President Winchester asked those here tonight to bring back the above information to their Councils. MINUTES: A motion was made by Brother Dennis Cass and seconded by Brother Tony Grego that the minutes of the last meeting be accepted as published. Brother Jerry Tarantino, DD said he had not seen the minutes. President Winchester gave him his copy. After Brother Tarantino received the copy and looked over same, a motion to approve the minutes was made by voice vote. TREASURER S REPORT: Financial Report for the month of January 2013. Balances on 01/31/2013: General Fund $537.84; Restricted Fund $4,452.26. Total checking Account Balance $4,990.10. Income for the Month of January $50.00. Total expenses (Nuns Build) $683.00. Tonight we collected dues from one Council. A total of 16 Councils have paid. Please ask your Council to include in their budget funds to go to the Nuns Build. Any amount would be appreciated. Motion to accept treasurer s report made by Brother Justin LaGrange and seconded by Brother Dennis Cass. Motion passed by voice vote. BILLS & COMMUNICATIONS: SEMINARIAN REPORT: DUES: Please ask your Council to pay their dues in a timely matter. If your Council has not paid their dues please bring your Council s check, in the amount of $25.00, made out to KC NEW ORLEANS METROPOLITAN CHAPTER, to the next meeting on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. You may also mail your dues to: KC METRO CHAPTER, 314 ST. CHARLES AVENUE, NEW ORLEANS, LA 70130. METRO CHAPTER NEEDS NEW MEMBERS. Chapter also needs more participation in meetings and events. COMMITTEE REPORTS: INSURANCE: Field Agent, Brother Gary Knoepfler, spoke about life insurance in general and specifically annuities. Today annuities are paying 2.25% and will never go below 1.5%. Brother Terry Kennedy, General Agent, retired at the end of last year. There is now a new General Agent. His name is Eric Ottemann. Right now he is working out of Terry s Slidell office. Same phone number. Knights of Columbus Insurance is looking for Catholic gentlemen who may be interested in becoming field agents. If interested they can contact Eric at 985-649-2703 MEMBERSHIP: Brother Paul Gagnet spoke on the need for all to recruit and the $9.00 per new member that Councils will be credited with on July 1 st, 2013. He said that membership is down. The net net number for the State is minus 300 members. Don t forget to ask the men in your parish to join the Knights. Have an open house and invite families. Check men s club in the parish to see if anyone may be interested in joining the Knights. KC LICENSE PLATES: Brother Dennis Cass is the State Chairman for the KC License Plates. He has forms to purchase these plates. If interested, contact Brother Dennis Cass at 504-427-8754. For the second year in a row, Marquette Council is collection Mardi Gras beads and donating them to St. Michael s school. If you have any beads that you would like to get rid of please give them to Marquette so they can get them packed up and sent to St. Michael s. Marquette made a $700.00 donation to Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Atlantic City, New Jersey to help in their Hurricane Sandy relief. This is our way of thanking those people who came to New Orleans to help out during Hurricane Katrina. Council 2878 Fr. On Sunday, April 21 st at the 8:00 AM Mass the Council will have their Corporate Communion.
