Hello St. s and Church of the Ascension parish communities, On Ash Wednesday the seminary has the tradition of beginning the forty days of Lent with a day of recollection which involves silence. The silence the house enters into begins after night prayer the night before and concludes after evening prayer the following day. The day of recollection happens once a month and is to spend the day in silence with our Lord. My favorite part of having a day of recollection is to see were the Lord has been impacting my formation over the past month. To have this day fall on Ash Wednesday help me to solidify my Lenten promises and ask the Lord to draw me closer to Him. After all this is the Lenten season a time where we can set aside those things which are good but do distract us from a deeper relationship with him. As I was reflecting on what to write for this weekend s bulletin column and the readings for this weekend the Lord placed on my heart to write why we pick up the Lenten promises we do. In our lives we give up many goods to achieve something greater. For example as a student I sacrifice many different good opportunities which helps me on my journey towards priesthood. The same is true for the liturgical season of lent. This is a time where we choose to give alms, fast, or pray more. Why do we do these things? We choose our Lenten promises to help us in our relationship with the Lord. Thus, the forty days of Lent is to deny ourselves a good in order to draw closer to the Lord. Just like how our Lord spent the forty day s in the desert to draw closer to his father. The temptation we all have is similar to our New Year resolutions. That is once we falter we tend to stop and forget about it. However one of the things I have to constantly remind myself of is that our Lord fell multiple times and was tempted by the Evil one. However Jesus perseveres and accomplishes the task at hand. So my brothers and sister in Christ let us persevere in whatever Lenten promise we have taken up so to draw closer in relationship with Our Lord. If we falter or have already done so I encourage you to start up where you left off, do not simply fall into the temptation of giving up. Allow these forty days to purify and bring you closer to the one who offered and sacrificed so much to restore our relationship with the father. Fink will be making tomato basil soup, homemade bread with honey butter and fresh-squeezed lemonade. Grilled cheese sandwiches will also be available. Any kids who would like to help with the cooking can just come to the narthex at 3:30 and Fr. Fink will teach you how to make bread. Yum, Yum!! Also for any kids who would like to assist Fr. Fink with the Stations by carrying the cross or candles, please be at the church at 6:45 for a quick training. The Stations of the Cross will begin at 7pm. This is a wonderful way to reflect on all that Jesus endured to save us. We will be having a Combined Evening of Reconciliation on Wednesday, March 13 th from 5:45 until 8pm. The Story of a Quilt: This year's Fish Fry Raffle Quilt is made up of blocks embroidered by Allen Schmitt's mother, sewed together by Allen's wife Vonnie and quilted by St 's quilters. It won Champion at the Carver County Fair in August 2018. Chances are $2 each. The quilt is on display in the narthex. Proceeds from the Fish Fry will go toward Parish Improvement projects. The St. 's Catholic United Financial will have its' Quarterly meeting on Wed. March 20th at 6:30PM in the Narthex. All are welcome Catholic United Scholarships Catholic United Financial Scholarship application period is open form March 1 April 30 of each year. Any member (any age) studying for their first degree after high school can apply. Applicants must have been a member for at least 2 years by the application deadline and when the scholarship is awarded.
