KNIGHTS CORNER August Family BBQ Over 75 Knights, family and friends attended our August Family BBQ. Fun was had by all parties. Knights brought a variety of dishes to pass. The council provided the meat, rolls and drink. Various games were available for all to play, including bocce ball, kickball and rope wrap around game. We are thankful that we had this opportunity to meet with our brother Knights, their families and friends. Have articles for future Knights Corner issues? Notify Deputy GK Tony Mele anthonyelaine1@hotmail.com For Dates to remember, turn to page 8 We were able to postpone our regular monthly August meeting in order to extend the time to spend with family members. I'd like to thank all those that worked so hard to make the summer BBQ's a success. Thanks go to Bob Zollo, Peter Riley, John Roder, Gary Natali, Bruce Blundell, Vann Dristle, and Chuck Hawks who worked the Kitchen. Thanks to all those who brought dishes to pass. And finally thanks to all those individuals who assisted in cleaning up after the BBQ. We could not have had this successful family function without the team work (unity) and fraternity of our members. http://www.kofc10904.org/ 1

New Membership Drive As Knights of Columbus, we need to provide other Catholic gentlemen the opportunity to participate in our fraternal organization. Every Knight should have an annual personal goal to bring in one new member to our Council. Your father, sons, and friends are your prime candidates. Remember, you can talk to a prospective knight yourself or give his name and contact information to Tony Mele GK Phone 458-9088. A recruiting drive is scheduled before and after all masses in the lobby of Sacred Heart Church on September 12th and 13th. All brother Knights attending one of these masses are asked to wear some Knights of Columbus clothing and a name tag as they volunteer to help talk to parishioners before and after your mass. http://www.kofc10904.org/ 3

Seminarians We have just been advised that the seminarians we will be supporting this Columbian Year include Dan Zinger, Gregory McPhee and Matt Schultz. We supported Dan and Gregory last year and are pleased to do so again this year. This is the first year of support for Matt who is the brother of Father James Schultz who was an assistant previously at Sacred Heart church. As in the past, we provide up to $1000 to each seminarian, as long as they are continuing with their studies, for personal expenses. In addition, the Knights (State Council) provide $10,000 to each Bishop in NYS, along with our council's $1000 donation for the education expenses of seminarians. Joseph House Joseph House is a home for women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy. Our Council, 10904, recently donated $1000 to the Joseph House. The following is the thank you letter we received from Denise Headd. "July 28, 2015 Dear Mr. Mele & Members of the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart, Greetings from Joseph's House. I am writing to thank you for your incredibly generous donation of $1,000 to Joseph's House. I'd like to express my gratitude and give you a general idea of how much your donation means to us. As you can imagine, the costs associated with running Joseph's House are immense. If it weren't for your gift we wouldn't be able to offer a warm, nurturing and loving home for those who come to us in their greatest time of need. Our moms and babies are given a comfortable and private room, a safe place to call "home", meals, resources to educational, occupational and spiritual growth, and love they have never known before. They are taught how to care for their child so that when they are on their own they will be well equipped to reach their God-given potential. Joseph House opened its doors on March 19. 2014. Since that time we have helped more than 30 moms and their children. Our moms' achievements include working on GED's, new college classes, new jobs and job promotions and we just attended a college graduation for one of our newest moms. We have watched them flourish as young women and as mothers. We have seen their children http://www.kofc10904.org/ 4

blossom under their love and care. We are so proud of their diligence and commitment. Your generosity has allowed these woman a second chance at a new life. You are working to change livestwo generations at a time. Without you there would be no Joseph's House. We are so incredibly grateful. Please keep my card handy. If you have questions about any of our programs or any ideas for our ministry, feel free to contact me at denise@jhfw.org or 315-345-1369. I'd love to hear from you. I wish you many blessings throughout 2015, and thank you for all you do to make Joseph's House a home for moms and babies. Fondly Denise Headd Joseph's House Director of Fund Development Voter Registration The Knights of Columbus Council 10904 will be hosting our 2nd annual voter registration drive at Sacred Heart Church, before and after all masses, on the 26th and 27th of September. Through the weekend brother Knights will be available at all doors of the church to distribute and collect registration forms. The mission of the program is to register members of the Sacred Heart Community that currently are not registered with the Onondaga County Board of Elections, which will allow them to vote in subsequent elections. The Knights of Columbus want to bring a heightened awareness to our parish about the importance of voting without regard to party affiliation. To complete this endeavor, information will be provided on obtaining absentee ballots for those that are not in town for election day. It is necessary that a person be properly registered. If a person has moved, it is necessary for them to again reregister. To register, a person must be a U. S citizen, must be 18 years old on the day of election and must have registered at least 25 days prior to an election. Brothers, before and after the mass that you normally attend, please assist in this registration drive. http://www.kofc10904.org/ 5

Benefits Corner We Stand Strong On Ethical Ground Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards. More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don t make it. We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life. In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come. But don t just take our word for it. In 2014, the Knights of Columbus was named a World s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. We were one of only two life insurance companies to earn the honor. Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance, said the Supreme Knight. But they http://www.kofc10904.org/ 6

know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.
