Legarski, Chaplain Brother Knights: On May 20 th the Church will bring to a close the Season of Easter with the celebration of Pentecost. Fifty days after the Resurrection, the apostles, gathered in the upper room, very much afraid of the fate that awaited them, became empowered by the Holy Spirit, and went forth to do the work of Christ. The time of Advent and the time of Lent are both accorded a mid-point observance. Advent has Gaudete Sunday and Lent has Laetare Sunday. It is during these times that the faithful are called upon to examine their spiritual progress through each season and discern how they may continue to spiritually grow. In this Year of Grace, the Solemn Feast of Pentecost could serve as the same kind of benchmark. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. As such, the feast invites us to renew and recommit ourselves to the work of Christ and His church. It calls us to discern with greater depth and focus how we can be better stewards of God s many gifts. In addition to these things, perhaps we could ask ourselves how we are doing in our celebration of the Year of Grace. What have we done to grow more aware of and responsive to the means of Grace? Have we endeavored to be more aware of the opportunities for Grace. Are we increasing the frequency of receiving the Sacraments? These among other things, are what the Year of Grace challenges us to do. It would be most appropriate I believe, if we made Pentecost this year a special one by seeing it as an opportunity to get onboard with the Year of Grace.
