Star of the Sea Minutes of October 10, 2017 The roll call of officers was called as follows: Chaplain: Rev. William T. Cocco (P) Advocate: Bill Drake (P) Grand Knight: (PGK) Bob Worthing (P) Warden: Brian Barnes (P) Dep. Grand Knight: Kevin Cunnion (P) Outside Guard: Jim Wilkinson (P) Chancellor: Frank Cilea (P) Inside Guard: Joe Cumella (P) Recorder: (PGK) Jim Benner (P) Trustee (1 Year) (PGK) Marty Foye (P) Financial Sec.: (PGK) Tom Simon (E) Trustee (2 Year) PGK Andy Palumbo (E) Treasurer: Don Evick (P) Trustee (3 Year) Rich Duffy (P) Lecturer: Vacant (P-present) (A-absent) (E-excused) Members Present: 33 Reading of the Minutes: The minutes, as sent by email, were approved by the membership. Reading of Applications: The re-instatement application for Samuel E. Allen was approved by the membership. Chaplain s Report: Father Cocco talked about the Golf Tournament who participated in the tournament and that it raised a lot of money for a good cause. He mentioned that he heard how everyone enjoyed the tournament. Father also talked about the hall renovation and it is on schedule and they are hoping to be done by the end of November if everything goes right without problems. The parishioners and visitors have been very generous in contributing to the Little Sisters of the Poor, the bishop from St. Maarten, and the Houston flood. Between the three of them they collected almost $60,000. The season of Advent is upon us and will be here before we know it. Thanked us for all we do for the parish. Grand Knight s Report: We have a social coming up in a couple of weeks and we had a couple of people looking at possible venues but didn t come up with one. We can either have one in the classrooms or anybody can come up with one in the next couple of days and make that work, then we could have the social. He is a little concerned about this as the socials provide fellowship and have family there. He would hate to have to cancel it. Father Cocco mentioned that he was talking with Nick Caggiano from Nicole s and that maybe we could use the upstairs of the Sports Bar. He said he would call Nick and find out. We have All Souls coming up on November 2 nd and Tom Simon will have a list of deceased members. Someone is needed to coordinate this to make sure we get the knights there. Kevin Cunnion volunteered to chair this event. We have Kept Christ in Christmas card sales coming up November 11 th. He sent Jim Benner a copy of the updated calendar (updated calendar can be viewed on our website). Marty Foye will be chairing the sale of the cards but he will need some help. Father Cocco asked when our next breakfast was (December 10 th ) because when he took his mother to the hospital he met a couple from the church next to St. Edmond and they were talking about different things father mentioned our breakfasts they said that they didn t know that we had them and sounded very

interested in them. Father said maybe in the future if we just notify them so know about them then maybe some may attend. We received a communication from the Cape Henelopen School District asking us if we were going to renew our support for the Consortium Pond Walk/Run. Bill Drake said he would chair it but we should have a co-chair so that they could take over next year. Bob said on the sale of Birthright Roses for 2017 said that there are about 41 schools and churches that support the sale of roses. It turns out that we were in the top six. We raised $1195 on the sale. Bob talked about the three working groups discussed at our last meeting. The whole idea of the groups is to try and bring back to the brothers to have the ability and opportunity to shape what we do instead of a couple of officers sitting around telling us what we are going to do. You have an opportunity here and it doesn t matter if you are new or been around for a while. Please take another look at the email. He has received several responses on the email but we really could use some more people. Treasurer Report: as of 9/30/17 Checking Account Beginning Balance $32,929.94 Ending Balance $35,188.85 6 Month CD $6,930.56 Petty Cash Fund $150.00 Total $42,269.41 Financial Secretary s Report of Receipts, Bills and Communications: We now have 212 members of which 5 are inactive. We have 3 of our 14 quota members and 2 of 5 insured members. Receipts $3,878.00 Expenses $760.00 Report of Service Program Committees: Michael Crescenzo reported that the breakfast was very successful and we made a little of $550. The next scheduled breakfast is December but we may not be able to have it because if hall renovations run over. So January will probably be our next breakfast. The Golf Tournament was a great event and I want to thank everyone who helped or participated. Marty Foye reported that please keep your donations coming for eye glasses, cell phones, and hearing-aids. Thus far this fraternal year, since July, we received 96 pair of glasses, 103 cell phones, and 26 hearing-aids. Culture of Life: Dr. Joe Curcio Report attached to email. Unfinished Business: We talked about a while ago about buying the on demand water heater for the hall but it s not in the minutes so we need to do so. We have to take a first vote. Don Vines questioned the money for the on demand water heater. The GK said the $2000 is sitting there but we don t have a formal record of it. Because Tom Simon isn t here we have no way of showing it. Michael Crescenzo said that some time ago it was decided that a portion of the breakfasts would go toward the parish. A motion was made and seconded to spend up to $2000 for an on demand water

heater for the parish church hall. It was approved by the membership and tabled until the next meeting whether social or business. The working group committee has made a change in which it has to do with specific purpose of fundraisers since the last email was sent out. A motion was made and seconded to approve the document sent out with the changes. It was approved by the membership. Bill Drake mentioned that although it is not a knight s event many knights donated and participated in the Boardwalk Buddy Walk and he would like to thank those that did. New Business: Jim Benner mentioned that the Golf Tournament pictures were posted on our website. He stated that we been having an issue with our council email. Group emails have not gone out or are not received until days later. So he has divided the contact list into three groups. So far this has seemed to work except for some with Comcast email addresses which seem to be an issue. He has experienced the same issue with the assembly email account also. Insurance Agents Report: Paul Albanese said he is out there trying to get us members and insurance members for Star Council. His services are free and he can review your current policy to see if there are any issues with it. The Knights of Columbus has an E app now that can be filled out on the agent s computer and signed right then and policy becomes active at that time. The other thing that they are doing is that you don t have to be a knight to get a policy. If you have a son or son-in-law, they can get a policy. Good of the Order: In the future when the GK goes to the state meeting he will pass along the notes to me so that it can go out to the membership. Some of the state things are on our calendar. The prayer list can be found on the website. 50/50 winner: Bill Drake Meeting adjourned: 7:57 P.M. Star of the Sea Council 7297 Web Site Next Business Meeting: Tuesday, November 14 th @7 PM in classrooms. Next Social: TBA
