Series at a Glance for Elevate ABOUT THIS SERIES The Bible is rich with stories about Jesus. Often times, we reference Jesus without being able to learn more about who He is. Through this series, we will look at some stories in the Bible with Jesus as the main character. Each week we will discover specific characteristics of Jesus and how we can be more like him! MEMORY VERSE 1 Peter 2:21 He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. WEEKLY OVERVIEW Lesson Topic Big Idea Lesson 1 July 2/3 Jesus is our Friend! Matthew 8:23-27 Jesus is always with us, whatever comes our way! Lesson 2 July 9/10 Jesus is Powerful! Mark 5:21-34 Jesus is powerful and always ready to help! Lesson 3 July 16/17 Jesus is Caring! John 11:30-44 Jesus cares about us! Jesus is Provider! John 6:1-15 Jesus can provide for us! Lesson 5 July 30/31 Jesus is our Leader! John 3:16 We can follow Jesus as the Leader of our life! 2

July 2/3 - Jesus is our Friend! Series at a Glance for Elevate (cont.) To launch this series, we will be learning how Jesus is always with us. We are either in troubled times, coming out of troubled times, or about to go through troubled times. Either way, Jesus is always by our side. He is our friend! How can we be friends to others? July 9/10 - Jesus is Powerful! This weekend, we will discover that in a crowd of people surrounding Jesus, one woman who had a severe sickness reached out and simply touched Jesus robe and was healed! Jesus is powerful and always ready to help! How can we help out others? July 16/17 - Jesus is Caring! Jesus felt all the same feelings that we do! He felt joy, love, and sadness. When Jesus heard that His friend Lazarus was dead, he wept. Jesus cares about us and cries with us and for us. How can we care for others around us? - Jesus is Provider! One of Jesus best known miracles occurred when he fed 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus provided more than just food. We will learn that when we give Jesus something, he can do incredible things with it. July 30/31 - Jesus is our Leader! We see the verse John 3:16 all over the place. Using that verse as the backbone to this message, we will learn that God loves us so much! That God gave us Jesus, and that if we believe Jesus died and rose from the dead then we receive the free gift of life in Heaven forever someday. Jesus is the ultimate leader and worth following! 3

What You Need to DO and KNOW Each Week Opening Do This: Encourage everyone to gather near the stage, and have FUN! Give high-fives, welcome the kids by name, dance to the music, and let kids know we re going to have fun today! Interact with the crowd! Create a buzz about what is going to happen. Know This: This is intended to be a fun time! You as the leader need to set that standard so kids can feel comfortable. If you re not willing to open up and be silly, they won t either. It s ok if some kids are shy or stand-offish, but YOU should model what we d like to see! Welcome Do This: Greet the kids with enthusiasm without being overwhelming. Know This: During this time you are working to gain the kids trust. Something as simple as telling them what is going to happen during the hour can help relieve some anxiety that they may have. We will also gain their trust by showing them that this is a place that is not weird or different from what they see in other places. Worship Do This: Perform the provided actions to the songs and demonstrate enthusiastic worship for kids. Encourage kids to join in, but don t force them to participate. Read aloud any verses that are on the screen (unless the song features a voice over). Direct the kids attention towards God. Call out upcoming lyrics when appropriate and help the kids engage in singing. Know This: It s okay if some kids don t sing or do actions to the songs. They may worship by just reflecting on the lyrics and listening. Our music set is generally made of high-energy songs to help kids get engaged in worship. Media Do This: Sit or stand to the side of the screen (s). Watch the media and appear engaged with appropriate non-verbals. Know This: Although this is a good time to catch your breath and gather your thoughts, you are still technically on. Kids may be looking at you to see if you are watching the videos, and if you don t look engaged, they may not choose to engage either. Prayer Do This: Ask the kids to be respectful and quiet; you will pray out loud, while they pray quietly in their hearts and heads. Sit or crouch down and engage the kids as you pray. Know This: We want the kids to learn how to pray by seeing you model this. Feel free to say your own prayer this one is simply a suggestion. Bible Verses & Memory Verse Do This: Read any verses from the side screen aloud. Make the memory verse fun! After you ve read it, do something silly like challenge the boys to be louder than the girls, jump up and down, add actions, or have the kids recite the verse using different voices. 4

Opening Song 2:00 (Roll when directed) Elevate Opener Hey everybody! It s time to get started, so please clean up your areas, turn off the games, and if you have popcorn, throw it away. Then come on over and join me by the stage! Listen, we are about to have a bunch of fun today, so if you are ready for a great day, come over and give as many high-fives as you can! Do This: Go into the audience and give high-fives. (Auto advance) Elevate Slide and Underscore Welcome 3:00 Welcome to Elevate everyone! You can go ahead and take a seat. My name is, and it is awesome to see you here today. We have a great day planned here in Elevate. If you are new around here, or even if you need a little reminder, we re going to sing a couple songs, learn some incredible things, and have a blast with each other. Whether this is your first time or you come on a regular basis, we are so glad you are joining us! Let s get started by answering a question from our pal, Lindsey. Check out the side screens. Would You Rather Lindsey Question Slide Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. If time allows, you can ask a couple of kids to share their examples with the larger group. 6

! Worship 10:00 Do This: If the worship team did not do the welcome, the teacher should invite them to the stage at this time. Worship Slide We are going to spend some time together worshipping God. There are many ways we can worship God. And we worship God because it is a way that we can thank God and show him we love him. When we sing these songs, it is a way for us to thank God for our voices. And when we do movements or dancing to these songs, it is a way to thank God for our bodies. If you know the words or actions, feel free to join us. If you just want to quietly observe, that s totally cool too. Sometimes it is fun to jump around and move around while we sing to God. Everyone stand up on your feet and let s sing to God together. This song is called Let It Be Known! Song 1: Let It Be Known (Auto advance) Worship Slide That is such a fun song! I love the idea that we can sing and celebrate the fact that our God saves. For those of us that have made Jesus the Leader of our lives, we can celebrate that fact and shout it out! We are going to sing one more song together that talk about how we can celebrate God and let the praises ring out to him! Song 2: Let the Praises Ring (Auto advance) Worship Slide 7

! It is so fun to start out the day by thanking God for what he has done in our lives. Before you take a seat, let s take a moment to pray, which is talking to God. I love that when we pray we don't have to use big fancy words and that we can just talk. Would you please join me as we pray and talk to God right now? Dear God, thank you for loving us so much. Thank you for this time we have together in Elevate. Lesson Intro 6:00 Do This: During the bumper video, the teacher comes on stage as the worship team leaves. Bumper Video (Auto advance) Welcome to Elevate everyone! My name is, and it is great to see all of you! I hope you are having a great summer so far. We are in a series called,, and we are learning more about who Jesus is. Many of us might hear about Jesus over Christmas as we talk about Jesus birth. And some of us might hear about Jesus over Easter as we remember and honor what Jesus did for us on the cross when he died for us and rose from the dead. But what happened to Jesus in-between his birth and death? Through this series, This Just In.. we are going to talk about the truth that Jesus really did grow up and had friends, and he actually did some incredible things like miracles, and Jesus demonstrated how to have the best life possible. We are going to get to know the kind of man Jesus was and is and learn more about the excellent example he set out for us. Do This: Reference to or pick up picnic basket. How many of you like picnics? picnic? What are some of your favorite things to have on a 8

Do This: Use a white board or flip board to write down some answers. Those are some really good picnic ideas. Some of my favorite picnic things to have are. What I noticed is that none of you mentioned having any fish here. Does anyone like fish? Would anyone eat fish for lunch? While most of us probably do not have fish for lunch on a regular basis, hundreds and hundreds of years ago back in Bible times, people ate fish a lot. A lot of people lived next to a lake or sea and fish were part of their everyday lives. So while we might have peanut butter and jelly for lunch and that is normal to us, they might have some bread and some fish for lunch and that was normal to them. Cool, huh? We will get back to the picnic idea a little later, but thank you for sharing all your ideas. I need to know if any of you have any nicknames or titles? Maybe you are really good at acting and theater and your friends call you Superstar. Or if you are super fast, your friends call you Speedy. Or maybe you like to cook and your family calls you Chef or Little Chef. Jesus had a lot of titles. Today, we are going to look at why Jesus is a called a provider! Let s check out what a provider is before we move on. Provider - a person who supports a family, someone that makes things available A provider is a person who supports a family, someone that makes things available. If you go to a doctor, he or she provides you with medicine. If you were to go to an ice cream shop, they would provide you or make delicious ice cream available. If you have a family member that goes to work, they are a provider by making money so that your house and bills can be paid. They provide you with food and shelter and clothes. Jesus was known as a provider! As far as we know, he didn t give everyone ice cream or coffee or anything like that. But over and over, Jesus provided people with things that they needed and he still does that today! And what we are going to learn today is that when we give something to Jesus, he can do incredible things! 9

In fact, this just in Jesus can provide for us! Jesus can do incredible things with what we give to Him! We are going to learn more about what it means to give things to Jesus in just a little bit! Video One 4:00 Now, let s catch up with our friends Booger and Lindsey and see what they are up to today. Booger Remix, Part 1 Share Your Story 3:00 (Auto advance) By a show of hands, how many of you would like some fresh baked bread right about now? Me too! Unfortunately, we are not having a snack right now. Maybe you could get some at the store when you leave. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever experienced something that was unbelievable? Maybe you ever asked God for something and it may not have happened exactly the way you asked, but you knew that God made it happen? I remember when 10

Do This: Share a 2-minute appropriate, relevant personal story about a time that you experienced God answering a prayer or experienced God do something extraordinary in your life. My experience didn t turn out exactly the way I thought it would, but I knew that Jesus provided for me. I never would have been able to accomplish that by myself. Memory Verse 5:00 Each series we learn or review a new memory verse. We will practice our verse in just a moment, but first, let s take a one-question Bible quiz! The first book of the Bible is called Genesis. What does that mean? A) The final frontier B) This just in C) The beginning The correct answer is, C) The beginning. The book of Genesis starts out with how God created the world. He created everything and everyone here. Next time you open your Bible and see the first book, you can know you are at the beginning! Now, let s read our Bible verse together. (Memory Verse) 1 Peter 2:21 He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. Great job everyone! Let s read it one more time but this time we will swing our arms like a windmill when we read it. Ready? Go! Do This: Have fun and feel free to be a little silly with this. Way to go! When this verse starts out with He, it is talking about Jesus! So we could really read this saying, Jesus is your example, and you must follow in his steps. 11

This verse is telling us that Jesus is our leader and worth following! We must follow in Jesus steps because when we do, we will make better choices. Jesus lived a perfect life, so we know if we are following his example, then we will be living the best life possible. Video 2 5:00 We ll get back to Booger and Lindsey now and see if she was able to find some food at the Bread factory! Booger Remix, Pt. 2 Message 8:00 (Auto advance) It is great that Mr. Zippy was found and that Lindsey was able to get some of that bread! Through this series called, This Just In, we have been learning who Jesus was and is. Jesus had buddies just like you and me. Jesus liked to do things that we do. He got ready for the day and got dressed. Jesus was a lot like you and a lot like me. We have been learning about some of the miracles of Jesus and today s story was one of most popular miracles that Jesus did. First, let s make sure we all know what a miracle is. Miracle: an unusual or wonderful event that is believed to be caused by the power of God. A miracle is an unusual or wonderful event that is believed to be caused by the power of God. Jesus performed a miracle when he spoke to a storm and it became calm. He performed a miracle when the woman who was sick simply touched his clothes and she 12

was healed! And a miracle happened when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. That doesn t happen every day! Each miracle that Jesus did showed that he was God. Jesus was showing people that we really could believe in him and trust in him because he actually was the son of God. Each miracle Jesus did was not to show off how awesome Jesus was, but to show how big God was. Let s talk about that popular miracle that Jesus did. Once again our story starts with Jesus being with a large crowd of people. He had a lot of followers learning from him and watching him perform miracles. Jesus got to a higher place and sat down with his friends, the disciples. He saw the crowd following him. The Bible tells us that there were about 5,000 men there. Think about that for a moment. That is more than some of your schools combined! With 5,000 men following, that does not even include the women or children that might have been there! That is a TON of people following Jesus around. It was about time to eat, so Jesus looked to his friend Philip and asked, Where can we buy bread for these people to eat? But look at what the Bible says about Jesus question: He asked this only to test Philip. He already knew what he was going to do. John 6:6 Jesus already knew what he was going to do! He wanted to see how Philip would respond. He wanted to see if Philip would look to Jesus to provide the answer, or if Philip would try to handle things himself. Philip figured that it would cost more than half a year s pay to purchase enough food just to give 5,000 people a bite of bread! Andrew, who was one of the friends and followers of Jesus said that there was a boy with five small loaves of bread and two fish that he was willing to share. But Andrew doubted that would feed even only the twelve closest friends of Jesus. 13

This is where Jesus does his miracle. He took the five loaves of bread and two fish and thanked God for it. Then Jesus started handing out fish and bread to people. Everyone that was there ate as much as they wanted. After everyone was finished, Jesus had his disciples gather the leftovers and the scraps filled TWELVE BASKETS! The boy gave Jesus what he had. Jesus took that and made a miracle happen. He provided enough food for more than 5,000 people! Jesus can take what we give him and do big things with it. Let s think about Jesus like this. When we give Jesus something, he can do big things with it. Do This: Hold up the card stock sheet of paper and also grab the scissors. Let s say we give Jesus this piece of paper. How many corners does it have? Yes, you re right. It has four corners. But what if Jesus wants to give one of you a corner? Do This: Cut a corner of the card stock and hand it to a kid. Okay, now that I have given a corner away, how many corners do I have? Whoa! That s right! I have five corners now. Let s say that Jesus wants to give away another corner. Do This: Cut another corner off the card stock and hand it to a kid. I have given away another corner. Now how many do I have? YES! I have six corners now! Let s try this one more time. Imagine if Jesus wanted to give any one more corner. Do This: Cut one more corner. Now I have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 corners! We only started out by giving Jesus a piece of paper with 4 corners, but now there are 7 corners! In a similar way, when we give something to Jesus he can do big things with it. Do This: Put paper and scissors down, and bring back the picnic basket and open it up. We started talking about picnics and then heard a story about how Jesus fed a bunch of people. We learned that when we give something to God, he can do big things with it. So what does that mean? What can we give to God? 14

Do This: Open picnic basket up and pull out one plastic loaf of bread. This isn t real bread, but on the back I see the word serve. Bread with Serve written across it When we serve, God can do big things with that! Maybe we serve by raking a neighbor s yard. That may seem like a pretty easy thing for us. But what if your neighbor had been praying that someone could help them because they can t rake their yard anymore. What if God did something incredible through your serving and raking your neighbor s yard! Do This: Pull out another plastic loaf of bread. Bread with Love written across it Here is another piece of fake bread. On the back I see the word love. God can do some really cool things when we show love. Maybe your friend had a really bad day at school. You know how to cheer them up with a hug, a high-five, or maybe just hanging out and talking to them. God can do some big things when you give love. Do This: Pull out one more piece of fake bread. Bread with Pray written across it Here is one more piece with the word pray. When we talk to God and give God our time, he absolutely can do big things with our prayer. We can pray for our family, for our friends, for the ambulance that drives by there is no limit to our prayer. He loves when we talk to him and wants to do big things through our prayer. We learned that Jesus is our provider. He can do wonderful things through us when we give it to him! 15

Wrap Up 3:00 If you remember anything as we leave today, I want you to remember that Jesus can provide for us! Jesus can provide for us! Jesus was such a great leader, and we can follow what he does by providing for others too! Do This: Hold up the Family Connection Card This Just In We have a couple things for you when you leave today. First, the Family Connection Card is for you and your family. This is a great tool to remember what we learned today in Elevate. You can show your parents or guardian what the Bible story is and even practice the Bible verse we are learning together. Do This: Hold up the Paper Pad Every great reporter needs a good pad of paper. They have it with them so that they can write down notes as they discover the facts. So, for this series, we want to make sure that you are able to discover the facts about who Jesus is. Last week, we gave you all a Bible reading plan. You could read through that plan, and have your pad of paper handy to write notes or questions you might have about what you read! You can also just use this to draw on too! Either way, we hope you like it! Game Time 11:00 We talked about how Jesus provides for us. We also talked about picnics and had a few different food conversations together. If you were on a picnic, or even camping, one of the most popular treats to have is a S more. What are the three elements to a S more? 16

Chocolate, graham cracker, and marshmallow! So let s play a little game involving them! If you have any food allergies, you probably shouldn t play this game. Give Me S more! Game Music We will need 8 people, or two teams of 4. One of you will have some chocolate, some graham cracker, and a marshmallow. You need to toss it to your partner and they need to catch each of these in the cup. You will want to toss them one at a time to make it easier on your partner. If you drop them, you need to get back to the toss line and try again. First team to catch all three S more ingredients wins. Ready? Go! Do This: Establish a throw line where one of the partners will have the chocolate, graham teddy grahams and marshmallow. Then establish where the catcher will be. The catcher can move around a little, but must use the cup to catch the ingredients. Know This: If you have more time, you can play multiple rounds. Elevate That was so fun! Contestants you may decide who gets to eat the chocolate and who gets to eat the teddy grahams. Thanks for playing! Let s pray together and thank God for this time. God, thank you for today. Thank you for being our provider. Thank you for loving us so much. We love you. Amen. Do This: Dismiss however you like best. Know This: If you get done early, you could dismiss to games. 17
