LITURGY AT HOLY TRINITY Lectionary 14 July 7, 2013 +9:30 am To Our Guests: Welcome! Whoever you are, wherever you're from, or whatever your feelings about religion or spirituality, you are welcome here. Please fill out a yellow slip in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate. The next orientation session (to find out more or for those interested in membership): Next fall. More information on Holy Trinity, Lutheranism, worship practices, marriage and baptisms at the back of the church. To families with small children: We are glad you are here! If your child needs a break from the service, feel free to walk to the narthex/back of the church. Nursery: open 8:15-10:30 a.m. Use the garden entrance on Addison; nursery is inside the door. Special children's bulletins are on a table at the back of the church.

ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: We have no good apart from God. That makes our Lord's call to follow him an invitation to freedom. This is freedom to revel in the Spirit's fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, and the like. This is the path of life. Please turn off all cell phones before the liturgy begins. * those who are able may stand Bold all This bulletin is available in large print GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. PRELUDE Concerto for Two Violas Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *GATHERING HYMN #575 In Christ Called to Baptize *GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *PRAYER OF THE DAY 2 WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 66:10-14 Christians have often used biblical references to Jerusalem as metaphors for the church itself. So the church, which sends us out to proclaim the kingdom, is like a mother, washing us in baptism, nursing us with the wine of the eucharist. This passage is one of the very few in the Bible where God is explicitly likened to a mother. The passage is set parallel to Luke 10 to provide an image of nurture to accompany the tasks of Christian proclamation. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 66:1-12 Setting: Hal H. Hopson The refrain is sung by the cantors and repeated by the assembly. Verses are sung by the cantors. Refrain: Make a joyful noise to God! All creation join the song! See God s wonders here displayed, unexcelled for ages long. Glorious is God s sacred name, ages old, yet still the same. Refrain Come and see what God has done: Great the blessings to the just; walked the chosen through the sea; brought their mighty foes to dust. Let us lift a thankful voice; praise God s mercies, sing, rejoice! Refrain Bless the Lord, our refuge sure; let our song of praise be heard! By whose justice, we are tried; by whose grace, our guilt deferred. When our days on earth are past, God will guide us home at last. Refrain SECOND READING: Galatians 6:[1-6] 7-16 In this the lectionary's last semi-continuous reading of Galatians, Paul renews his call for Christians to live in Christ's new creation. Lutherans have judged Galatians to be one of the most Christocentric books in the Bible, and thus we continue to give it serious attention. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the cantors then repeated by the assembly. Carolyn Jennings Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, and let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. (Col. 3:15, 16) Alleluia, alleluia. 3

*GOSPEL: Luke 9:51-62 Now it is we who are called both to tolerate nonbelievers and to leave all to follow Christ as we proclaim the kingdom. The challenge is to apply the radicalness of Jesus' words to our lives in the world. The holy gospel according to Luke. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. SILENCE *HYMN OF THE DAY #576 We Are All One in Mission *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray. Have mercy, O God. *PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. 4

MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS AND SETTING OF TABLE Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. OFFERTORY ANTHEM O God of mercy Gerre Hancock (1934-2012) arr. Paul Bouman (b. 1918) O God of mercy, God of light, in love and mercy infinite, Teach us, as ever in your sight, to live our lives in you. Teach us the lesson Jesus taught: to feel for those his blood has bought, That ev ry deed and word and thought may work a work for you. And may your Holy Spirit move all those who live to live in love, Till you receive in heav n above those who have lived to you. (Text: Godfrey Thring, 1823-1903, alt.) *GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout for joy: 5

During the prayer, the assembly sings these responses: As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Be seated. *COMMUNION *LAMB OF GOD 6

All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. HYMN #668 O Zion, Haste SILENCE Stand. *PRAYER SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. *BLESSING Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *SENDING HYMN #550 On What Has Now Been Sown *SENDING Go in peace, Christ is with you. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE Processia Nova Kenneth L. DeJong 7

Christmas Boutique 2013 Planning Meeting Do you want to get to know other Holy Trinity members? Do you bake, cook, sew, or make other crafts (or know others who do)? Did you participate in last year's Christmas Boutique and want to see this event succeed again in 2013? If you answered YES to any of these OR are wondering, "What is Christmas Boutique?" please stay after worship for a brief planning meeting on Sunday, July 21. We'll meet in Passavant Hall that day around 10:45 to reflect on last year's event and discuss Christmas Boutique 2013. Can't be there on July 21? E-mail Kristi with your ideas/interest: kah2277@yahoo.com. Register For VBS Once again four ELCA churches in Chicago are teaming up to offer an amazing Vacation Bible School (VBS) experience this July 14 19. For more information and to register, head to docs.htchicago.org/vbs. Help Holy Trinity welcome a refugee family Over 40 million people worldwide are living as refugees, forced to leave their home country because of war, violence or persecution. This summer, you can help Holy Trinity and RefugeeOne give a family a fresh start. We won't know much about the family until they arrive in late August, but there is a lot we can do to prepare. Please visit the sign-up sheets in the back of the church to select from a registry of needed household items. If you're interesting in volunteering your time, you can sign up to help decorate the apartment, greet the family at O'Hare airport, or help the family once they arrive. We also need financial gifts to meet our fundraising goal of $2,000 -- enough to for the first three months of rent. Questions? Contact Laury Rinker (Laury.Rinker@gmail.com). Thanks for your help! Save The Date! Financial Planning Seminar On Sunday, September 8, following the 10.30 a.m. worship service, Giver for Life, a financial planning seminar will be presented by Jennifer Prinz, Regional Gift Planner for the ELCA Foundation. Sponsored by Holy Trinity s Mission Endowment Committee, this seminar will cover such issues as: who needs a will and why, the importance of beneficiary designations, planning our estates to benefit our families and our church, and maximizing our gifts to the church and charity. Watch for further details in coming weeks of this important seminar. A light lunch will be served. 9
