Denial as a defense mechanism It may be difficult to understand why an abuse victim does not come forward immediately to report an assault. For those who have suffered sexual assault or abuse, denial can be a powerful defense mechanism, one that allows them to cope with the trauma and its aftermath. Often, an abuser is someone the victim knows and trusts, which makes it even harder to understand why the abuse is happening, and harder to come forward and ask for help and protection.
