3rd-5th February 3-4, 2018 Jesus feeds the 5000 John 6:1-14 Jesus can do anything! Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (20 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together Ask kids about why they created fish art, and what their favorite part of today s service was! It s Superbowl weekend, so be prepared for lots of new kids and families visiting for the first time! *Today s service is 80 minutes long. Today s story is a great example of God s provision. Not only did Jesus feed 5000 people, he filled them completely full, and there were even leftovers! Jesus doesn t give us what we need; he gives us even more!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. BUILDING MADNESS! *You ll want to do this activity where there s access to a keynote, so you can play fun music during the activity (if possible). The keynote music mix is on the first slide of the keynote. Divide kids up into groups of 6 (if you have a small room of kids, you can keep them all in one group, or divide into smaller groups of 3 or 4). Put the following materials in a gallon ziplock bag for each group: 1 game card (there are 8 different choices) 50 straws 1 roll of scotch tape Tell groups to send one kid to get a bag, and take it back to their group. Explain that in each bag, they ll find a card with an object on it, and some straws and tape. Each team has to use these simple materials to create the object on their card, and make it as big as possible! Here s a special catch: while kids are building, the leader will play some fun music. Every couple of minutes, the leader will stop the music and yell Freeze! Kids have to stop whatever they re doing, and do whatever the leader says (see actions below). Let kids start building, periodically freeze the music every 3 minutes or so, and yell out the following commands for kids to do: Gallop like you re on a horse in a circle around whatever your team is building. Do 5 jumping jacks Give a high five to 5 people in your group. Go slap a wall then run back to your group Make up your own if you want! After kids have done the action, resume playing the music and let kids continue building. After 10-15 minutes, go around and show the room everyone s creations, letting the room guess what they think the object is. Have groups throw their materials away (or put them somewhere until the end of service, then throw away).

3rd-5th You ll need the following props for today s lesson: Check out today s brand new Storytellers video at CrossroadsKidsClub.net/weekend. 12 bags (unfold and set up on stage) Bread images (1 per kid) Markers (1 per kid) *Here s the music video we ll watch as kids have a dance party at the beginning of Large Group! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru0k 8uYEZWw *Today s service is 80 minutes long. DANCE PARTY! Main Goal: Have some fun and party! WELCOME AND INTRO *Click to play intro music. Say: Hey everybody! Welcome to Kids Club! It s Super Bowl weekend, which means we ve probably got lots of new faces here today. We re really glad you re here! Say: We ve got something fun to do before we go to our lesson: DANCE PARTY! We re going to play a fun video, and you can dance and celebrate any way you want as you watch. Because in Kids Club, we love to party and celebrate that Jesus can do ANYTHING! Music Video: Can t Stop the Feeling! Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson. Ask: What did you think of our Connect Time game? Did you like creating those big objects out of small materials? Why? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, I love building stuff like that too. You have to get creative and work together if you want to make something really cool! Say: What if I asked you to take your group s materials, and turn it into a tower that was 500 feet high! Could you do it with what you had, all by yourself? (Let kids respond.) Probably not...that would be impossible! You d need way more straws and popsicle sticks and tape, and maybe a really tall ladder!

WE ALL LOVE FOOD! Main Goal: Have some fun and talk about food! FEEDING THE 5000 Main Goal: Show how Jesus performed a miracle and created food for 5000 people from 5 loaves and 2 fish. Say: Today we re going to hear about someone who actually did something like that. It wasn t with straws and pipe cleaners though. It was with...food! Say: Before we hear more about that, let s play a game. It s called Would You Rather, and the theme is food! I ll give you two choices, and you have to walk to the side of the room that you prefer. Ready? Everyone stand up! (Give the choices on the following page, and have kids walk to one side of the room to show which they choose. If you re limited on space or want kids to stay in their spot, have them choose by jumping or sitting down, etc.) Would You Rather... Eat pizza, or ice cream? Eat popcorn, or chips? Swim in a pool of jelly, or peanut butter? Eat a whole jar of mustard, or smother your whole head in ketchup? Eat mashed potatoes every day for breakfast, or waffles everyday for dinner? Say: Okay, great job everyone! Give someone a high five, then have a seat. (Let kids respond.) Now that we ve got food on our mind, let s watch a movie clip about a girl who gets served all the amazing food she could possibly want! Video: Beauty and the Beast / Be Our Guest Ask: How would you all like to have a feast like that? (Let kids respond.) Yep, that would be be amazing! Say: Now let s find out what food has to do with our story today! First, let s talk about a guy named Jesus. Some of you may have heard about him before, but some of you might not. He s God s son, and he came to live here on earth, and be close to us. Let s talk about three important things to set up Jesus story today: Jesus traveled a lot, talking about God and healing people of sickness and hurt. Lots of people heard about Jesus and the amazing things he did, so they followed him everywhere he went! One day, more than 5000 people followed Jesus up on a mountain!

JESUS DOES THINGS KNOW ONE ELSE CAN DO Main Goal: Understand that Jesus did a miracle, and was able to give everyone enough food! JESUS PROVIDES FOR US TOO Main Goal: Identify something that kids want Jesus to provide for them. Say: Now I don t know about you, but when I go hiking up a mountain all day, I get hungry! And that s exactly what happened to all these people. They needed food, but there was nothing close by to eat! Say: Let s watch a new video and see what happened next. As you watch, pay special attention to what Jesus does to feed all these people. Video: Storytellers / Feeding the 5000 Ask: So HOW do you think Jesus was able to feed 5000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he was able to do it because he s God! He can do amazing things that NO ONE else can do. Things that don t make sense, or seem impossible! Say: Let s check out a verse from the book of Mark that sums this up pretty well. Slide: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, With people this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Say: All things are possible with God. If there s anything that you remember from today, it s that all things are possible with God. Jesus can heal the sick, feed 5000 people out of nothing, and he even rose from the dead! No one in the world has ever done that, except for Jesus. Say: Okay, we know that all things are possible with Jesus. But what does that mean for us? Well, have you ever needed something in your life? Something that you didn t have right then? Raise your hand if so. (Let kids respond.) Say: We all need things, just like people needed food in today s story. (Talk about a concrete personal example of something you have needed in the past, or something you need right now, and how you asked Jesus to provide in that situation, or how he DID provide.) Say: No matter what you re facing, Jesus has to power to take care of you and help you through it. He s an all powerful God AND totally human. There s nothing that s too big for him, or too hard for him to handle. Nothing that will make him give up on you.

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP Main Goal: Give kids a chance to actively respond to what they re hearing. Close the lesson with prayer and worship *Make sure props are ready. Say: You may have noticed that we ve got 12 bags up here. They represent 12 baskets. Does anyone remember what that might have to do with today s story? (Let kids respond.) Say: Yep, when Jesus created food for all those people, he didn t just make enough food to feed them. He made MORE than enough! He made so much food, there were 12 baskets full of leftovers! That s the kind of God we have. A God who gives us even more than we need, because he loves us so much. Say: Right now, think about what all of this means for you. What s something that you need Jesus to provide. It could be a big thing, or a tiny thing. Maybe you just need Jesus to comfort you. Maybe you need him to provide something really big. Whatever it is, close your eyes, and get it in your mind right now. (Let kids think for 10-20 seconds, then have volunteers pass out bread/fish images and markers to each kid.) Say: Once you ve got it, write it down on the image of bread and fish that the leaders are passing out. Once you re done, come drop it in one of these 12 baskets! While you do that, I m going to play a worship video. Music Video: Freedom Note: If the music video feels too long for your group, feel free to turn it down and stop around 3 minutes into the video. Pray: Jesus, thank you for loving us so much that you heal the sick, and rise from the dead. We love you for feeding all those people when they were hungry, and for helping us when we need it. Amen!

Goal: Kids will (1) learn about how Jesus performed a miracle and fed the 5000, and (2) understand how we can trust Jesus to do miracles in our own lives too. Why: Jesus did a lot of amazing things in his lifetime, and he s continuing to do them today. We want kids to recognize what Jesus is doing in their own lives. Tip: There s an extra fun surprise today: every kid gets a treat! Make sure to be on the lookout for kids with allergy alert stickers. SNACK & STORY *Today s activity involves giving kids a treat! You can have them eat it during Small Group, or send it home with them. Ask kids what Jesus used to make food for 5000 people (5 loaves of bread and 2 fish). Tell kids that today we re celebrating how Jesus can do AMAZING things that no one else can do, and we want to celebrate that with some fun treats! Give every kid a treat (ask kids if there are any allergy restrictions before passing out). As they eat their snack, discuss the story. 1. Imagine: You re really tired, you ve been traveling all day, and you finally get a break. You re exhausted and hungry. And then thousands of people show up! How would you feel? How do you think Jesus felt? What did he do? 2. What do you think the little boy was thinking/feeling when he offered his lunch? 3. Could Jesus have fed all those people without the 5 loaves and 2 fish? Why do you think he still asked for that small amount of food? 4. What did the disciples say when the boy brought his food? (They laughed! They thought there s no way that tiny amount of food could feed them all!) Did Jesus laugh? (No; he used the boy s lunch to provide food for everyone!) 5. What do you need from Jesus? What s something you want to ask him for? MAKE IT PERSONAL Give each kid a fish template, and tell kids that we are creating fish art today to remind us of how Jesus provided what all those people needed using just a few fish! Set out regular markers and tell kids to think of one thing they are thankful for that Jesus has given them. Once they ve thought of it, they can write it down or draw it on one side of the fish. (Continued on next page.)

(Continued) Let kids cut out their fish with scissors. Set out dot markers and glue sticks, and give each kid 10 tissue paper squares. On the other side of the fish, they can decorate it like a real fish! They can use the materials to give it a face, fins, scales, patterns, bubbles, etc. Remind kids that dot markers are used by dotting the paper like a stamp. Read the verse aloud as a group using the available verse card: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Play this game to help kids memorize it! Have kids sit in a line or circle, and assign each kid a word from the verse. On your count, the first kid quickly stands and jumps, says their assigned word, then sits back down. Then let the next kid do the same with their word, and go down through each kid. Repeat three times going faster each time, or having kids do a new action when they say their word (standing and clapping, standing and lifting hands up, etc.) EXTRA TIME OPTION 2: FUNNY FOODS Have kids sit in a circle (If your group is bigger than 10, you might want to divide into a few groups for this activity.) The first person says one food. Then the next person has to say that food and then add another food. Then the next person says the 2 previous foods, and then adds their own food. Go around the circle and let kids keep adding a food to the list, while trying to remember everyone else s! If you slip up you re out!
