Pastor s Notes CATHOLICS COME HOME In the next few weeks I am planning to purchase a new cell phone. Cell phones are important as they help us stay connected with people we care about (family & friends), people who keep us safe (police, fire department, & a tow truck) and information that helps us with our daily lives (making reservations at a restaurant and then finding directions to the restaurant). I know I'll place a high value on the service department where I purchase the new phone, because I need someone there to explain how the tech works or I won't make the best use of the phone. Now let me make an analogy. Even more than any phone, our Catholic faith helps us be connected: connected with God, with our family, our community and a treasury of wisdom that can shape my life in a wonderful way. In order to know my Catholic faith, I need someone to explain it to me. There has to be a "service department" where I can get answers to my questions. This includes questions that might seem basic, and the "service department" encourages me to ask those questions. Here at St. Mary, we want to help people know and understand their Catholic faith. This month we are opening a special "service department" to help answer your questions about what Catholics believe and why we believe. Dan Cheely, our Director of Evangelization, will be leading a number of sessions on different topics. The next session will be on Thursday, April 23 at 9:00am or 7:00pm. The topic: Who is Jesus? Just a good man, or Lord of our lives? "Catholics Come Home" is a great opportunity for Catholics and non-catholics to learn more about our faith in a supportive environment. Please see the notice in the bulletin or website and join us for any or all of the sessions. Bring a friend. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION Congratulations to the young children of our parish who are receiving our Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Communion this month. My sincere prayer is that each and every child will grow in understanding that Christ is present (Body, Soul, humanity and divinity) in the consecrated Host and Precious Blood. Adults can help children believe in Christ's Real Presence by the reverence we show at Mass, fasting for an hour before receiving Holy Communion, praying after receiving our Lord in Communion and genuflecting before the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle. Sometimes our actions really do speak louder than words; so let's act in accord with our belief and help children believe in the Real Presence of Jesus. EASTER COLLECTION My sincere thanks to everyone who supported our parish by contributing to the Easter collection. Our budget anticipated $140,000 in donations; you very generously donated $145,317. Your continued support helps St. Mary's offer the many ministries and programs that respond to the spiritual needs of the people in our community. Thank you. SPRING READING One of the great gifts my parents instilled in their children was love of reading a good book. Finding more time for reading is a goal of mine for 2015. So recently I reread the classic "Diary of a Country Priest" by Georges Bernanos. Consider joining our book club discussion on Bernanos book beginning on Monday, April 20 in the parish center Room C. PRAYER FOR CARDINAL GEORGE Cardinal George has been very public about his struggle with cancer since he was first diagnosed in 2006. He has always appreciated the prayers people have offered to God on his behalf. Please join me in praying to God for the gifts of peace and hope for Cardinal George at this moment of his life on earth. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern@archchicago.org

Church of St. Mary Bible Study 2015-2016 2015: Exodus: Called to Freedom Find out facets of God s name that you had never been aware of. Receive incredible insight into why He needed to reveal His name to Moses and the Hebrew people. See the importance of what this means to us today in our daily lives. Along with this learn the importance of God s law and the significance it had then and still has now in the covenant of love that God wants to maintain with His people. The Sabbath and its observance have special meaning and implications in this covenantal relationship. All of this is shrouded under the cloak of freedom. 2016: The Prophets: Messengers of Mercy If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is His Bride, then the prophets can be seen as spiritual marriage counselors. They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom, and show us how to share Him with others. Religious Education Program Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit On April 11, St. Mary s welcomed Bishop Francis Kane to our parish for the Sacrament of Con irmation. In his homily Bishop Kane explained there are four things we must do to ful ill our mission as Catholics: Know your faith enough to share with others; Live your faith despite pressures to do otherwise; Pray your faith by taking time to talk to God and have a relationship; Celebrate your faith by coming to Mass regularly and receiving the Eucharist. We pray for the 144 newly con irmed young men and women that the gift of the Holy Spirit inspires them to be bold witnesses for Christ.
