Faith Formation and Education SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS ONE START TIME, ONE CAMPUS, ONE SOLUTION DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION The Saint Anne Parish School 3rd graders celebrated Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, with our Sharing Parish, Saint Frances of Rome, on Tuesday, October 30th. The Day of the Dead is a celebration of life and death. Día de los Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Like any other celebration, Día de los Muertos is filled with lots of music and dancing! While the holiday originated in Mexico, it is celebrated all over Latin America with colorful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons). Our 3rd grade students were warmly welcomed by the SFR 3rd graders. Meeting new friends is always fun! The SAS and SFR 3rd graders celebrated the Day of the Dead by first becoming aware of the history to understand what the celebration is all about, and then, they were able to put together Q-tip skeletons, paint sugar skulls, make skull puppets and decorate sugar skull masks. They all made many colorful mementos to take home! www.stanneschoolbarrington.org 847.381.0311 Schoolfamilies@stanneschoolbarrington.org A National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence 4 Saint Anne Church November 25, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron THE SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE LAST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR 2018 (161B) 1st Reading: Daniel 7:13-14 Psalm 93:1, 1-2, 5 RX = The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty. 2nd Reading: Revelation 1:5-8 Gospel: John 18:33b-7 (A) Lectionary texts: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/112518.cfm (B) Bible texts (with verse #): http://www.usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bible/index.cfm In one sense, it is appropriate to end the yearly liturgical cycle with the celebration of The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe the declaration that in the end, The Christ is King. But this day also serves as a transition into next week when the new liturgical year (Year C) begins with the Advent scriptures which very early show just what kind of king this One is. On December 2nd, 2018, the First Sunday of Advent, Luke, the evangelist whose gospel is highlighted for Year C, gives us, at chapter 21:36, a vision of remarkable clarity. He says that when we are vigilant and prayerful, we will have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man. 1 Also, on that First Sunday of Advent at 1 Thessalonians 3:12, 13, Paul prays that God will strengthen [our] hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones. It is the Lord who is King of the Universe. The Hebrew text of today s psalm (93, v.1) is starkly clear; it proclaims, The Lord is king, robed with majesty. Look at the verses of the short psalm. In its five short verses, the Hebrew word is translated into English as Lord, meaning God. The emphasis is that God is king, rather than God is king. In other words, it is the God of the Israelites who is above all other gods, domestic or foreign, who is King of the universe. The other three scriptures for today emphasize this. In the gospel passage for today, John carefully shows Pilate setting the stage in order to highlight what kind of king Jesus is for the community for whom he writes. Pilate asks: Are you King of the Jews? It is a double-edged question: for the Jewish members of John s group, the question is a strictly religious one for only the God of Israel can be king of Israel (This is typical of John s ironic touch. Jesus is king in the ancient sense, and he will be put to death because he makes the blasphemous claim that he is Son of God. But, note my comments about kings). To the Roman civil authority (Pilate), the question is a strictly political one because there is already a king in place who had been appointed by the power of Rome Herod, the puppet of Rome. John shows Jesus carefully explaining: My kingdom is not from this world... Jesus satisfies the civil question; he is not trying to usurp the throne set up by Roman oppression. Pilate s question then becomes a religious one. Jesus answers very specifically that he has come into the world to testify to the truth. That truth is that Jesus is proclaiming the kingdom of God where God s justice is practiced. When kings first entered Israel s history, it was the understanding of all the people that the principal task of the king was to bring about God s justice, that is, a king was to establish and maintain right order among the people; right order had to do with correct relationships. Correct relationships occur when the Son of David fulfills God s justice everywhere as is proclaimed next week by Jeremiah at 33:14-16, especially v.15, In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land. God s kingdom is where all outcasts and in-group, sinners as well as the righteous all, are invited and welcomed. John s passage today ends with that very same challenge to his own community: Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my [that is, Jesus ] voice. 8 Saint Anne Church November 25, 2018 stannebarrington.org

Sharing the Living Story It isn t easy for us highly individualistic Americans to relate to monarchy. Think of our origins; we rebelled against a powerful king in order to gain our independence. Yet, when Princess Diana died or when Prince William and Kate were married, we turned, fascinated, to watch the royals. What are we thinking when we name as king this One who is The Christ, the Savior? What do we picture as we sing the psalm refrain for today? The Lord is King; he is robed in majesty. Is this a king so robed in majesty that we dare not approach? Or is he among us... with us... and in us is he not approachable... touchable... embraceable? Is this not the One who emptied himself so that any barrier to intimacy with humans is removed? Think back to the time when deep within your heart of hearts, you were absolutely certain that there was no barrier between you and the one with whom you were in deep relationship you knew this: my beloved is mine, and I am his (Song of Songs 2:16a); you were intimate! Is that not true with us and the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, whom we celebrate today as well as during the advent days that are almost upon us? [Start reading the gospel of Luke! As the season of Advent progresses, read the first 3 chapters in anticipation. In connection with today, read 1:46]. SO WHAT?? At Mass, at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest sings in our name, Through him, and with him and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. To which we answer in sung proclamation: Amen (So be it.) What could we mean when we proclaim this Amen? Could it be that in our heart of hearts we desire that intimacy? In the chapter immediately preceding, after acknowledging that his hour has come (John 17:1), Jesus prays earnestly for his disciples as well as for future disciples, so that they all may be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us (Jn 17:20 ff). Could it be that in our heart of hearts we desire that intimacy? Maybe look again at the Jeremiah pericope. 1 Note that this Lectionary selection is taken from late in Luke s gospel; it concerns the end times which is the very theme of today s celebration, Christ the King.
