S E P T E M B E R, 2 0 1 7 Great things are on the horizon and we are ready to win our community for Christ. At our recent LBA (Church Board) meeting I had the privilege of casting some vision. Here are some of the talking points: We are on the verge of completing remodeling of the main building with new carpet and paint in the sanctuary. Much of the basement has been beautifully transformed into a youth department. The trustees are now getting things ready to complete the painting and flooring in the remainder of the basement area. After the gym was remodeled this year and renamed Lifeline Worship Center, we are in pretty good shape as far as facilities. We are thankful for what God has allowed us to do to the property here at United. I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Pastor Tim............ 1 Service Times.......... 2 SWU, 3k Run.......... 3 Kids Connect........... 4 Small group Contest.... 5 Small group........... 6 IWU, Food drive........ 7 Carol;ina faith Riders.... 8 De clutter............. 9 NEW VISION: Now that we are finishing up our remodeling we are faced with the question: Now what? We have property that will be going onto the real estate market such as the Easley First Wesleyan church property. During our LBA meeting, the board voted to start a Church Planting fund with a percentage of the proceeds from these properties. This is exciting! We can be a part of building the Kingdom of God in other zip codes! Here is why church planting is important: Church planting reaches lost people. It is a proven principle that church plants is a great way to win new converts to Christianity. Church planting follows a biblical pattern. Most of the churches in the New Testament were sending people in some form or another to plant other churches. Church planting is essential for survival. Recent studies show that a denomination of 100 churches has to plant 3 churches to stay ahead of attrition. Also, a 5 percent increase is needed to grow and 10 percent is needed to thrive. Church planting benefits the planting church. Dr. Jeffrey Farmer did his dissertation on how church planting impacts mother churches. His findings were that planting churches (of all sizes) were healthier than those that did not. Church planting is necessary to reach North America. There is never a good time to plant a church so do it anyway! Planting a church is like having a baby, there is never a good time! There is never enough money, time, energy and space to have one. Childbirth is messy and has a lot of yelling, but in the end, a beautiful life is born, the labor is forgotten, and we often want to have another. ---Ed Stetzer Let s grow this Fall! Pastor Tim

Titus 1:5-9 ESV This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quicktempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. United SWU athletic director named NCCAA president By Grace Eckert Jul 28, 2017 The National Christian College Athletic Association announced that Chris Williams, Southern Wesleyan University director of athletics, will become its new president. Williams has been on the NCCAA Board of Directors and Administrative Committee Member since 2011. He has been the director of Southern Wesleyan Athletics since 2007 and has had nine teams become NCCAA national champions during that time. He has brought nine athletic programs to Southern Wesleyan: women's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, women's lacrosse and women's triathlon. There has been a long list of improvements and additions to the Warriors athletic facilities under his leadership, some of which include a track and field complex, re-branding of the athletic department logo and branding guide, and leading the athletics program from the NAIA to the NCAA II. "I am honored to serve the NCCAA and the membership in this way," said Williams. "I want to thank each of the earlier presidents of the NCCAA for their service and loyalty to the association. I am hopeful and optimistic that the NCCAA and its member institutions will continue to shine Jesus light through the platform of sport." Williams will continue in his role at athletic director at SWU. 3rd Annual Run The 3 rd Annual Run for Missions 5k 2017 is well into the planning stages! United IWU to open music therapy clinic By Ashley Witkowski Aug 1, 2017 Indiana Wesleyan University's Music Therapy program recently converted a portion of Center School, an academic building on IWU's residential campus, into a music therapy clinic that is expected to open in September 2017. The clinic will provide free music therapy services to those in the local community and will be managed by Rebecca Barnard, associate professor of Music Therapy. Music therapy is a healthcare field that uses music in a prescribed manner as a treatment for rehabilitating, maintaining and improving the lives of individuals with physical, intellectual and emotional disabilities. "We're using music to solve non-music goals in things like speech and fine and gross motor skills," said Barnard. "For example, if a child needs to work on hand function, it's a lot more fun to pick up a shaker and play music than it is to simply pick up a spoon." The music therapy clinic at IWU will be a teaching clinic for students in the IWU Music Therapy program. Students in their junior and senior years will have the opportunity to be involved in leading one-on-one sessions with clients while under the observation of Barnard. Students working in the clinic will receive practicum credit that will go toward their 180 hours of required fieldwork. IWU's Music Therapy program, established in 2014, is housed within the Division of Music and is fully accredited by the American Music Therapy Association and the National Association of Music. The program prepares students for the health profession that uses music and musical experiences to maintain and improve a person's functioning level in a variety of health domains. Don t forget to check our FOOD PANTRY each week for items needed. See Donna Whitten for information. Page 7
