Campus Huddle Leadership Guide
To see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes and coaches. To present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. Integrity Demonstrate Christ-like wholeness privately and publically (Proverbs 11:3) Serving Model Jesus example of serving others and developing trusting relationships (John 13:1-17) Teamwork Express unity in Christ (Philippians 2:1-4) Excellence Honor and glorify God by doing everything to the best of our ability (Colossians 3:12-14)
At the heart of FCA are coaches. Our role is to minister to them by encouraging and equipping them to know and serve Christ. FCA ministers to coaches through Bible studies, staff contacts, prayer support, discipleship and mentoring, resources, conferences and retreats. The Campus Ministry is initiated and led by student-athletes and coaches on junior high, high school and college campuses. The types of Campus Ministry include Huddles, Team Bible Studies, Coaches Bible Studies, and Chaplain Programs. Camps are a time of inspiration and perspiration for athletes and coaches to reach their potential by offering comprehensive athletic, spiritual and leadership training. These types of Camps are Sports Camp, Leadership Camp, Coaches Camp, Power Camp, and Team Camp. The non-school based FCA ministries reach the community through partnerships with the local churches, businesses, parents and volunteers, and the club sports community. These ministries not only reach out to the community, but also allow the community to invest in athletes and coaches. Christ-Centered Kingdom-Minded Bible-Based Athletically Focused Spiritually Nurturing Fellowship-Oriented Volunteer-Intensive Culturally Adaptive Faith-Financed
Share Him Boldly FCA shares Jesus with those who do not have a personal relationship with Him. We believe that salvation is only found in Jesus, and with great passion we desire to share the Gospel with the world. they continued teaching and proclaiming the good news that the Messiah is Jesus. Acts 5:42 Seek Him Passionately FCA equips and encourages others to seek Him daily. A life-long pursuit of knowing and loving Jesus takes perseverance and discipline. they welcomed the message with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Acts 17:11 Lead Others Faithfully FCA desires to model Jesus example of serving by seeking out the needs of others, developing trusting relationships and caring about the individuals we serve. excel in gifts that build up the church. 1 Corinthians 14:12 Love Others Unconditionally FCA realizes that the most powerful force in the world is love. We desire to be obedient to the Lord as He said that we would be known by our love. Above all, love each other deeply 1 Peter 4:11 Share (evangelism) Seek (discipleship) Lead (multiplication) Love (Fellowship)
As a Christian, an athlete, and a FCA leader, we are called to be servant leaders. We can look at great leaders around us to see what qualities they have. But the leader that we should be modeling ourselves after is Jesus. Though He only led for about 3 years of his life, He turned the world upside down. He is quite possibly the greatest, most influential leader in the world. A closer look at the leadership of Jesus John 13: 1-15 (Jesus washed his disciples feet) We are to follow Jesus example of service even doing the jobs that no one else wants, the dirty jobs, or the thankless jobs that receive no recognition. Philippians 2: 3-8 (God, in his very nature, is a servant) When Jesus became a man, he showed us who God is a servant. Jesus didn t change who he was as God. Jesus served because God, in his very nature, is a servant. Matthew 20: ( whoever wants to be first among you, must be a servant ) Make sure to keep a pure heart in your motive to lead. Lead out of humility, grateful for the chance to lead, recognizing that all you are and have is from God. Serve your teachers, classmates, coaches, teammates, family and friends. Leadership (Service) within your huddle: -Be a LISTENER (take time to listen, focus on hearing what others are saying) -Talk with as many people as you can (don t just hang out with your friends) -Show up early and look for ways to help out if needed, or start talking with others who also come early (not the other leaders) -If you re not leading that week, still participate show interest in more than just your opportunities to lead -Get rid of the it s not my job attitude go the extra mile to serve
What we do will be reflected by our followers. If you re not committed to doing what it takes to become more like Christ don t lead. John 15: 5 Apart from Christ we can t do anything. Why is it important to GROW in our Christian lives? If we want those we lead to grow & seek a deeper relationship with Christ, then we must do it first. John Maxwell - All great leaders have understood that their number one responsibility was for their own discipline and personal growth. If they could not lead themselves, they could not lead others. Leaders can never take others farther than they have gone themselves, for no one can travel without until he or she has first traveled within. John Wooden - It s what you learn after you know it all that counts. Romans 2:21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? Questions to ask If everyone in your Huddle develops a relationship with God like the one you currently have, how spiritually healthy would they be? What steps are you taking to foster growth in your life? Our growth must be intentional and proactive. Growth doesn t just happen. Can you become a faster runner by sitting on the couch watching TV? How to grow? Decide what areas of your life you want to grow in and how you re going to do it. Ninety-five percent of achieving anything is knowing what you want. Serving, fellowship, worship, bible study, prayer, solitude Accountability/a mentor Two are better than one If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Do you have someone in your life who knows you so well that when you fall that person can help you back up? As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 Do you regularly meet with another believer for the purpose of intentionally allowing him or her to sharpen you?
Being a leader of your FCA Huddle is a big role. How do you fit into that role? Do you have the commitment to follow through the whole year with being a leader? On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your Huddle Group on: Share: Seek: Lead: Love: What is the goal/vision of your FCA huddle for this school year? How will you present an opportunity for people to have a relationship with Christ at your huddle meetings? Think back to previous huddle meetings. What was the best? Why? What was the worst one? Do athletes feel welcome? Are you having good discussion? Are you using FCA material? Are you fulfilling the mission? Is Christ being presented? Were the meetings publicized? Are the meetings student led? Are you meeting with your huddle coach? Did you have food and fun at the meetings?
Make the questions sound conversational -Speak in a conversational tone and use your own vocabulary Don t be afraid of silence -Give everyone time to speak and use the 10 second rule Share your answers to the questions -You are also a participant in the group Ask one question at a time Explain what you want the group to do -You are in charge and influence when to move conversations, pray, etc. Don t try to take too much control -If a discussion takes off, don t worry as long as it doesn t wander too far Ask open-ended questions -Stay away from yes or no questions State each question simply and clearly Don t over-emphasize your own viewpoint or application Have I prayed for this meeting? Don t accept Sunday School answers Is there any scripture that relates to this meeting? Invest in others outside of sport How can I relate to this topic? Can I explain the questions & my ideas? Is there anything separating me from God? Do I want to serve others? Love those who attend Have practical applications Use a conversational tone Is this about me or about the Lord?
Remember who you are and why you are helping lead your Huddle: The American public school campus is one of the greatest mission fields in the world! As a huddle leader, you are an ambassador for Christ a missionary. PRAY PREPARE STRUCTURE PLAN PROMOTE Keys to Choosing a topic: Choose something you re passionate about, but is also relevant to the others in your group and can be applied to your lives in a spiritual way. Keys to Preparation: Humility remember that you ve been GIVEN the opportunity to share BY GOD Creativity don t be satisfied with what s always worked, let your personalities out Excellence don t wait till the last minute, nothing can be done with excellence then 4 Parts of an FCA Huddle Welcome (& preview of topic) step up & get it started (~30 sec.)
