Bags have lists attached of most frequently needed foods. Please choose single or small sizes, no bulk sizes nor glass containers. Donate health foods you would serve at home: foods high in fiber and protein, low in salt, sugar and fat. Groceries contributed by parishioners help stock the food pantry at our sharing parish, Holy Family Food Pantry in Waukegan. Families use the Food Pantry to supplement their own pantries in times of need. You may also consider making a monetary donation to the Food Pantry. CARDINAL GEORGE Much has been said about Cardinal George since he passed away on April 17 and I imagine much more will be written about him in the coming years. For now I would like to say how much I appreciated his presence at our parish. Cardinal George offered Mass for anniversaries of the parish (2000) and the dedication of our church building (2010); he dedicated the Primary Grade Center in 1997 and gave speeches in our church on several occasions. He even came one evening for dinner at the rectory and simply visited with the priests. Cardinal George very generously gave his time to us. As a person becomes older, or faces terminal illness, it is tempting to protect your time; yet, Cardinal George continued giving his time to people all the way until last Friday. May the Holy Trinity welcome the soul of Francis Eugene Cardinal George to a life without time or limit in the Father's House. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. WANTED: GOOD SHEPHERDS The Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as "Good Shepherd" Sunday. This is fittingly also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, an important day when we pray that many men and women respond to God's call to become a shepherd. For instance, parents are shepherds to their children. The Little Sisters of the Poor are shepherds to the poor elderly that they care for in their homes in Palatine, Chicago and around the world. In a special way, I encourage your prayers for vocations to the priesthood. Priests are to model their lives on Christ, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for his sheep. Please pray for priests and pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. Thank you. AS THOSE WHO SERVE St. Mary is blessed with a remarkable number of volunteers. When you look at the bulletin or the parish calendar, so much is happening thanks to people who generously donate their time to the parish. On Sunday May 31 we are planning to host a Ministry Fair in the Upper Grade Center gym. Parish organizations will have representatives available after several Masses to share information about who they are and what they do. More details about the Fair will be in the bulletin. WEDDING BELLS I will be away in Des Moines on the weekend of May 2 for the wedding uniting Alli Harvey (our youth minister for high school students) with Colton Smith. I am very happy for Alli and Colton; preparing them for the Sacrament of Marriage has been a great blessing to me. Please say a prayer today for all couples preparing for marriage.
