Even though this great Feast is a Holy Day in our Church, undoubtedly there will be more people who hear this message on a year when the feast is on a Sunday. This is the second weekend of my series of homilies on the five most dangerous prayers a disciple can pray. Last week I spoke about the prayer Search me, O Lord. This week I will be speaking about the prayer Break me, O Lord. Why would we want to be broken? Why would we ever pray this way? Obviously we do not want to suffer, or to experience tragedy or failure or danger. But we do need to ask God to break us of our egos, our pride, our rebellion, our selfishness, and our desire to be served other than to serve. On this All Saints Day we read the very beautiful passage from Matthew 5 the Beatitudes. These verses speak to us about blessedness in the most unusual ways. How can those who are poor in spirit, or those who mourn, or the lowly be blessed? They can only be blessed if they know that their help is from God who will heal the broken hearted. On the other hand, those who are self sufficient, self righteous, or self absorbed can find themselves in a dark and isolated place. Saints are those people who allow God to break them of their egos. They allow God to shine through their lives. Leonard Cohen, the singer, song writer, poet and writer in his song Anthem wrote these poignant words: Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in. Leonard Cohen s words speak eloquently about the embrace of brokenness that should mark the life of every disciple. Ask the recovering alcoholic or drug addict, the person of faith who has just been diagnosed with cancer, or the parent who lost a child. In the moments of our brokenness, God s light can shine through with a brilliance we never thought possible. Allow God to break through your brokenness and find the courage to ask God to break you of your ego and selfishness. QUESTIONS TO PONDER: *Can you describe a time in your life when you were broken and the light of God s grace and love emerged through those cracks? *Where in your life do you need to be broken so that God can work and break through?
The Bonnstetters: Hope Does Not Disappoint Get Claire a dog, she heard God say plainly. Marsha had been resisting Claire s pleas for a dog for months. You re not listening, God, Marsha responded. I don t want a dog! Then God said to her, If she wanted to play piano you would get her lessons. She wants to play agility. Get her a dog. So, their beloved dog, Snickers, became a member of the family ten and a half years ago. Sometimes God speaks with perfect clarity. Sometimes the meaning of God s words can only be discerned after much pain, confusion or consternation. For the Bonnstetters, God s presence has been revealed in both ways. Yet, however they have heard that divine voice, this St. Paul s family has responded with faith, obedience, and a hope that has not disappointed. It was when we were waiting for some medical tests for Claire that I completely put her in God s hands, Marsha recalls. At that moment, the peace of God which transcends all understanding (Ph 4:7) became a reality for me. Claire s miraculous healing has become a bedrock of faith for the whole family. Claire was born with a connection to Christ, Marsha says. When she was eleven months old, she lovingly kissed each piece of the Nativity scene before placing it in the stable. And at age two, she would play Mass and she knew every word of the Eucharistic prayer. She s an ongoing example of the childlike faith she was born with. Claire s medical struggles and healing has awakened Marsha to the call of evangelization. God has called us to evangelize through the story of Claire s healing, she says. But that story is too long to tell here! Marsha has obviously mastered the subtle art of the cliffhanger! Through it all, the Bonnstetters have learned that God doesn t reserve His words for the saints or for the spiritually elite. He talks to all of us, Marsha says. But we have to listen to hear Him. Keith heard God s words years ago when he made his first CEW retreat in Clinton. I learned that in order to find true happiness, we must die to self by forgiving others and loving people for who they are and not for what I wanted them to be, Keith recalls. Our actions must speak of the love of Christ or the words that come forth from our mouths are simply noise. Claire loves to be a part of a Church with such a long and storied history. For me, to be a part of a Church that has been around for almost 2,000 years, which was founded by Christ Himself, and to this day still holds fast to traditions from the first centuries of its existence is breathtaking! she says. That at each and every Mass, and in the tabernacle of every Catholic Church throughout the entire world, the God of the universe is present mind blowing! Claire s enthusiasm for the Lord compels her to evangelize in many ways, including social media. There is so much negativity and immorality that goes through people s newsfeeds. I think it is really important to shine Christ s light into that darkness. Our culture tells women they are only worth as much as how perfect their bodies are. It is important to tell them that they are precious and priceless and remind them of their dignity. The Bonnstetters receive fuel for the journey in daily Mass, and find particular consolation in the Rosary. I really feel the fruits of the mysteries of the Rosary, Marsha says. Not only does Christ allow me to be in His presence, He longs for me to be there. Though our thoughts are not always God s thoughts, the Scriptures tell us, it is comforting to know that God will never leave us nor forsake us. Even through the pain and suffering, the Bonnstetters remind us that we can rejoice, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us (Ro 5:3-5).
Welcome to St. Paul s! A few weeks ago, we highlighted our guiding values. Number two on our list of ten is Building Relationships: We are all about relationship. Our relationship with God guides, informs and overflows into our relationships with others. As God pursues a deep, personal relationship with us, we intentionally pursue loving relationships with those around us so that the presence of God can be known and a civilization of love can be built. One of the ways we have tried to foster relationships is by trying to help our new members feel more connected to people as they register at our church. This typically means a meeting with a member of our staff to welcome them and to get to know them, potentially a dinner at a parishioner s house or coffee with a parishioner, and a new member social in which we get to connect them to other new members. St. Paul's continues to be a place that attracts members to this vibrant, faith filled and loving place. In yet another effort to build connections, we are going to start displaying pictures of our new members in our bulletin monthly. On Divine Mercy Sunday this spring, Pope Francis formally announced a jubilee Year of Mercy for the Church to celebrate in a special way the love, forgiveness and blessings of our God. The Year of Mercy celebration will begin on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which honors the start of God's plan of redemption with the Holy Mother of God. It will end on November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King, which honors the fulfillment of God's plan in Christ's eternal kingship. King's Harvest Ministries needs volunteers for its Winter Overflow Homeless Shelter from December 1 through April 15. The shelter opens its doors for anyone needing warmth and sanctuary on cold winter nights. Three different positions are needed each night during this time period including: Guest Check-In: 8:45pm to 10:30 pm Sack Meal Preparation and Handout: 9 PM to 10 PM Overnight Monitoring: 8:45 PM to 7:00 AM To learn more, please attend one of King's Harvest Ministries training/sign -up nights. Humility of Mary Housing needs volunteers to help in Gertrude's Fresh Start Boutique/Donation Center. HMHI takes in single parent families that are homeless and helps them to get back on their feet. We provide a furnished apartment and free access to clothing and home necessities for all program families. It is crucial that donations are checked in, sorted and tested so that they can be made available to participant families. St. Paul the Apostle School 2nd - 5th grades led the school in a Living Rosary. Balloons used in place of beads were released as each prayer was finished. The students also passed around a large set of rosary beads. Children are welcome to be in babysitting for all or part of 11AM Mass- whatever works best for your family. The babysitting room is located in the Multipurpose Room under the Gathering Space and is a safe child-friendly environment. Babysitting is also offered during IGNITE for children 6months- 8 years and during Mom's Ministry for toddlers and preschoolers.
