Hello, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017 Last week I got a few questions from parishioners about some new Church document saying that we cannot use Gluten Free hosts. (Circular letter to Bishops on the bread and wine for the Eucharist Prot. N. 320/17) Actually the letter didn t change anything but rather was a reminder to bishops about the rules on what can be used for hosts. The current instructions that we follow came out in July of 2003, which seems to be about the time when I started hearing about people with gluten allergies or celiac disease. This specifies that while gluten-free hosts are invalid to use for the celebration of Mass, low-gluten hosts can be used. There are four different approved sources for low-gluten hosts in the United States and the ones that we use are made by the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, who are located in Clyde, MO. Their low-gluten hosts that we use have less than.01% gluten content, which appears to be helpful for many. Here at St. Joe s we only have a couple of people who have told us about their need for low-gluten hosts. Every parish I have been at since 2003 has had a slightly different way of addressing this concern, each seemed to work in their specific situation. If you have the need to receive only a low-gluten host please talk to Fr. Schaab or myself so we can help you and others in our parish. Another question I have been receiving lately is who is the new principal for our PSR? We have hired Mrs. Debbie Wilmarth. The position was posted in the archdiocese and we received a good variety of applications. Fortunately I had the assistance of a variety of parishioners who were a combination of PSR parents, PSR teachers, and full-time teachers to interview applicants. Also, fortunately, we all agreed on our ultimate choice, she accepted our offer, and we look forward to see the way we can continue to help the children and families of our parish and many other parishes who come to our PSR to grow in their faith. As we finished the fiscal year with the end of June I also just wanted to thank everyone for their continued generous support of the parish. Last year our offertory donations totaled $572,733, which was $24, 276 over our budgeted $548, 457. This is especially impressive when it is considered that we also held the Beyond Sunday capital campaign last year and surpassed our goal there also. Just last week we went past our Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) goal of $96,209. It would be great if we could meet our new donor goal (we need 7 more new donors) and our prior percentage of participation goal (needs 14 more donors, or only 7 more if we get the 7 new donors). I hope that answered a few questions. I will have more details about our new PSR Principal and our finances in our yearly report in a couple of months. Try and stay cool. Peace, Fr. Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are NOT registered in a parish? If you are not registered in our parish, please consider doing so. Also, please encourage your friends and family to register. Registering is important because: If a parish doesn t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register? When the services of the Church are needed, such as for a wedding, baptism or funeral it is easier if the person is already registered. Registering is easy. Simply call the Rectory, Monday Friday, 8:30 4:00 and we will take the information over the phone! (314-726-1221) We look forward to welcoming all Catholics in our area as registered members
