This is the experience of so many Christian families today. Dear Parishioners, A NOTE FROM FATHER Happy Feast of Christ the King. May we all prepare a proper throne for Him in our hearts and lives. This weekend, Deacon Mark Kober, the director of the Deaconate program of the Diocese of New Ulm, is with us to preach the homily and speaking a little about the role of a deacon in the Church and liturgy. Welcome, Deacon Mark. Next month, we will of course be celebrating Christmas. I have already received some comments, and I know that there are people who are disappointed that I cannot offer Mass at a time and place convenient for everyone. This year, Christmas falls on a Monday. This means that the morning of the 24th is the Fourth Sunday of Advent, while the evening of the 24th is Christmas Eve. These are two separate liturgical days even though they are within the same calendar day. As such, we are obligated to attend Mass on Saturday night/sunday morning for the 4th Sunday of Advent, and another Mass on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day for Christmas. Both days' are obligatory. Ordinarily, I offer the three weekend Masses, and in the past, 3 Christmas Eve and 2 Christmas Day Masses. Following that schedule, I would be offering 8 Masses in less than 48 hours. Because of this, the Area Pastoral Council and Administrative Councils discussed how best to handle the schedule. We discussed the limits and numbers of musicians, lectors, servers, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, especially at St. Paul s, it was suggested that we not offer a Christmas Eve Mass there. The decision, too, was based on the fact that the 6 pm Mass was the lowest attended of the five Masses last year, even though Christmas fell on a Sunday (in fact, both Masses at St. Paul s combined were less than the smallest attended at St. Peter). Further, there are 4 separate sets of readings/prayers (Vigil Mass, Midnight Mass, Mass at Dawn, and Mass of the Day) offered for Christmas, and this allows all four to be used. In Christ, Fr. Todd JOHN IRELAND NEWS www.churchofstpeter.org/ji We are a Catholic community welcoming students of all faiths, devoted to Gospel Values, Academic Excellence, and Christian Service. CHURCH OF ST. PETER Prayer Warriors Needed Please consider being a prayer warrior for our Parish Mission coming in January. How do you become a prayer warrior? All you need to do is add the Parish Mission to your daily prayers and add in the specific intention each week. This week s intention is: That all members of our Area Faith Community would be open to the Holy Spirit working in their lives. Faith Formation In a special way, we would like to thank the Catholic Daughters for their generous contributions for the Fall Retreat, as well as the donations from our individual parishioners. Your donations truly helped us provide a great retreat experience for the teens. Our theme this year was Shake the World. Like the disciples, we retreated to an Upper Room to practice our faith safely. Throughout the weekend we were guided by the Holy Spirit to not keep our Catholic identity hidden, but rather to go out and "make disciples of all nations". 2017 Ministry Appeal Thank you for your generosity to the 2017 DMA. We saw in the video the impact of our contribution on real people right here in the diocese. By joining with others around the diocese in support of these ministries, we can ensure Catholic Charities counseling to our neighbors in need and support programs for youth as well as adults in the Church who are doing Christ s work. If you haven t made your pledge or given a gift, please consider making your contribution now. Be assured that your gift will only be used to support those ministries designated in the DMA brochure and no other. Need help with your holiday shopping? Order gift cards through John Ireland School s Scrip Program! Stop by the school or parish office for order forms, go online to order, or check next week s bulletin for an order form.
