MARQUETTE ASSEMBLY #1197 January 2018 Faithful Friar: Father Daniel Schuster This month I intended to share with you an inspiring quote from our founder the Venerable Father Michael McGivney. A simple problem arose; unlike other holy people, he did not write or publish much at all. Nor did anyone make a record of Fr. McGivney s sermons. It would have required a few weeks to research a selection of good quotes to share with you. Fr. McGivney was a man of many actions, but few words. So often as priests, we try to impress people with our words. This was not the modus operandi of our founder. This strange lack of quotability does not allow us to conclude that he lacked passion, zeal, drive, or effectiveness. Quite the contrary. Young men found Fr. McGivney s priesthood attractive, Christ-like, and they looked to him as a role model. There are in fact many silent saints. Not all men are built like Augustine, Aquinas, Fulton Sheen, or John Paul II. In this time after Christmas, St. Joseph also comes to mind as a silent saint. In our culture today, we are losing the sanctity of silence as we surrender to a dictatorship of noise. The noisier this world gets, the less saints there will be. The more that each of us prattles on in words while filling the void in our hearts with sound, the harder it will be to hear the voice of the Christ-child in Bethlehem. It will also be difficult to discern which needs we ought to attend to as Knights. How did Fr. McGivney know the needs of the immigrant? How did he hear the cry of the poor? How did he understand the plight of the men in his parish? Where did he learn of the necessity to strengthen the family? This was all discovered through listening to people, and by asking the Holy Spirit in silence what actions to take.
As winter rages on, and the world is insulated by snow, we can remain silent, sit in silence, and befriend the silence. Like Fr. McGivney, we will not be judged by the Lord for the great things we say and the awesome quotes we leave behind, but by the impact of the love with which we build up the kingdom. Have a blessed winter! Rev. Daniel J. Schuster CALENDAR OF EVENTS January 18, 2018: Officer Planning Meeting The Assembly will be conducting an informal officer meeting to discuss programs, budgets and other charitable activities for the coming year.
