Saint Martin of Tours People Ministering to People Roman Catholic Church and School Community Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s mercy and love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 A Note from the Bishop Statement of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath Diocese of San Jose The news this week of the historic sexual abuse of minors in six Pennsylvania dioceses is truly horrific. Trust was first betrayed by these attacks on the innocent; however, the systematic cover-up and reassigning of these priests by their bishops and superiors is just as unforgivable. As I have stated on many occasions, we the Church and its ministers must abide by a higher standard. We are called to protect and keep safe children, the young and all vulnerable persons. There can be no short-cuts, nothing that can excuse immoral and sinful acts. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to protecting God s children and to fostering the safest of environments in which to worship, learn and live. I echo the bishops in Pennsylvania who have asked for forgiveness. Yet we know that forgiveness does not absolve perpetrators of the consequences of these grave transgressions against the defenseless. Finally, I ask you to pray for the victims and their families. I would also request that you pray for the vast majority of priests present and past who have been faithful in their ministry. They, too, grieve for the terrible stain of this sin that has harmed so many. May God bless you all. Please keep Judy Swazey in your thoughts and prayers. If you are interested in visiting her or sending her a card please contact the Parish Office for her info 408-294- 8953 x11 or stmaritnoftours@icloud.com She would love to hear from you... The city is sweltering, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given "extraterritorial rights," meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican observatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There's still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don't have a personal castle in the hills! --Rev. Faith Formation Corner We are now celebrating the Twenty -first Sunday in Ordinary Time and for this week s Faith Formation Corner we have another reflection from one of our RCIA participants. Matt participated in our RCIA program this past year and received all his Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and 1 st Communion) at the Easter Vigil. Please see his reflection on his own experience below: When The Time Is Right My name is Matt and it was always the plan to become Catholic, but then the roadblocks of life always seemed to get in the way. Whether it was work, relocation, or other hobbies, inquiring about the process to become Catholic always seemed to take a back seat. It was after our first child was baptized and our 2 nd was on the way that I heard the calling or at least a voice in my head what are you waiting for. It is said that timing is everything and my RCIA journey was exactly that. Like many new adventures, walking into the first RCIA meeting was intimidating and uncomfortable. New people, new ideas, new surroundings were all things even as an adult you don t necessarily look forward to. However, after the first meeting passed I knew I wanted to learn more. Instead of anxiety, I quickly looked forward to each Thursday meeting with the group. Group probably isn t the correct way to describe those that were in my RCIA class. I would consider this Group an extended family. From the leadership to those that sat around the table, it was not only a pleasure to get to know them but an honor to share this experience with them. It was truly a blessing that the calling came at the right time. Otherwise, the lifelong friendships and bonds might not have ever existed. If anyone who is exploring the idea about becoming Catholic and want to learn more about the process from someone who recently lived it, please don t hesitate to reach out. When the time is right, you will know.. - Matthew Brann If you are interested in learning more about the RCIA process, but not sure where to begin please contact Daniel at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org. As always, if you have a question or comment, please email Daniel or Megan. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults As we celebrate the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time we invite you to be a part of the next group learning about what it means to be Catholic. Please see our Faith Formation Corner for a sincere reflection from one of our participants in RCIA last year! If interested, please contact Daniel at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org. Do you feel a calling to be creative and to help others with your God given skills? If you can knit, crochet, weave or would like to learn and want to share with others the gift of God s healing love, please join our Prayer Shawl Ministry. We are a group of mixed skills and help one another in our crafting and pray for the recipients of our prayer shawls. Many say they feel the care and love that went into these shawls. So please if you know of anyone needing comfort due to depression, illness, loss of family member or loneliness call and give us their name and information.
