THE INVOCATION THE ORDER OF SERVICE I. WE PREPARE TO MEET OUR LORD We invoke ( call upon ) the name of our Triune God. Leader: We begin our worship service today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! ALL: I thank you, my Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen! OPENING HYMN: #773 [Tan Supplement] II. OUR LORD SPEAKS TO US 1 ST SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ ISAIAH 49:22-26 There is a great deal of comfort that comes through patience and trusting in the LORD. Even in captivity, the LORD promises to His people with an oath (like in a courtroom) to remind them He is their Redeemer. All nations would know that the LORD, He is God and has power over the world. The gruesome judgment of the LORD reminds us during Lent of the full judgment laid on our Savior, Jesus. 22 Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I will lift My hand in an oath to the nations, And set up My standard for the peoples; They shall bring your sons in their arms, And your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders; 23 Kings shall be your foster fathers, And their queens your nursing mothers; They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, And lick up the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD, For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me." 24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, Or the captives of the righteous be delivered? 25 But thus says the LORD: "Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, And the prey of the terrible be delivered; For I will contend with him who contends with you, And I will save your children. 26 I will feed those who oppress you with their own flesh, And they shall be drunk with their own blood as with sweet wine. All flesh shall know That I, the LORD, am your Savior, And your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob." 2 ND SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ MATTHEW 12:22-29 It s Jesus versus Beelzebul. The accusation against Jesus from the Pharisees is that he is driving out Satan (demons) by the power of Satan. Jesus responds to them how that makes any sense. What Jesus demonstrates is how the power of God is manifested in His power over Satan. It is Jesus alone who is able to defeat the strong man. He literally nails it in His victory on the cross for you and for me. 2 P a g e

22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" 24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." 25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 "And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 "Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 2 ND SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ ROMANS 5:17-6:2 As Paul writes to the Christians in Rome, he qualifies the power of our Ruler, Jesus Christ, who reigns over all, including our power over our sinful flesh. What has Jesus delivered us from? Sin, death and the power of the Law which condemns us. Because of His righteous act, we have a justification and new life. Paul basically asks, Why would we go back to our old sinful ways? 17 For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH ~ THE 2 ND ARTICLE (REDEMPTION) I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into 3 P a g e

hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. HYMN OF THE DAY: #144 [Red Hymnal] SERMON MEDITATION read/watch sermons and services online at www.fdllutheran.org Psalm 40:9-17 I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness In the great assembly; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O LORD, You Yourself know. 10 I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth From the great assembly. 11 Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD; Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me. 12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; Therefore my heart fails me. 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me! 14 Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion Who seek to destroy my life; Let them be driven backward and brought to dishonor Who wish me evil. 15 Let them be confounded because of their shame, Who say to me, "Aha, aha!" 16 Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let such as love Your salvation say continually, "The LORD be magnified!" 17 But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God. LORD Jesus, Think on me! 1. You purge the pirates of my faith. 2. I ll praise the power of Your love! 4 P a g e

SERMON HYMN: #320 [Red Hymnal] III. WE OFFER OURSELVES TO OUR LORD AN OFFERING OF THANKFUL HEARTS TO THE LORD So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. ~ 2 Corinthians 9:7 OFFERING: Because He Lives by Matt Maher I believe in the Son, I believe in the risen One, I believe I overcome, By the power of His blood, Amen, Amen, I m alive, I m alive, Because He lives Amen, Amen, Let my song join the one that never ends Because He lives I was dead in the grave, I was covered in sin and shame I heard mercy call my name, He rolled the stone away Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, Every fear is gone I know He holds my life my future in His hands SPECIAL PRAYERS ~ GENERAL PRAYER ~ SAY LORD S PRAYER IV. OUR LORD BLESSES US OUR CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION OF SINS L: Having heard God s Word, let us confess our sins to Him. Do you sincerely confess that you have sinned against God and deserve His wrath and punishment? Then declare it saying: I do confess. Congregation: I do confess. L: Surely, you should confess; for the Word of God declares: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. CONGREGATION SINGS: [Red hymnal #315:1] I come, O Savior, to Thy Table, For weak and weary is my soul; Thou, Bread of Life, alone art able, To satisfy and make me whole: L: Do you repent of all your sins committed in thought, word, and deed, as well as the sin of failing to do what God expects to be done? Then declare so by saying: I do repent. Congregation: I do repent. L: Indeed, you should repent, as did the penitent sinners: David, who prayed for a sorrowful heart; Peter, who wept bitterly; the sinful woman; the prodigal son; and many others. CONGREGATION SINGS: [Red hymnal #315:6] Weary am I and heavy laden, With sin my soul is sore opprest; 5 P a g e

Receive me graciously, and gladden, My heart, for I am now Thy guest. L: Do you believe that God, through His undeserved grace and love for us, for Jesus sake, forgives you all of your sins? Then declare so by saying: I do believe. Congregation: I do believe. L: Truly, you should believe, for Holy Scripture declares: God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. CONGREGATION SINGS: [Red hymnal #315:9] What higher gift can we inherit? It is faith's bond and solid base; It is the strength of heart and spirit, The covenant of hope and grace. L: Do you promise with the help of the Holy Spirit, that you hope to amend your sinful life? Declare it to God in saying: I do promise. Congregation: I do promise. L: Most certainly, this is a good promise, for Christ, our Lord, tells us to: Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. CONGREGATION SINGS: [Red hymnal #315:11] Thy body given for me O Savior, Thy blood which Thou for me didst shed These are my life and strength forever, By them my hungry soul is fed. L: Finally, do you believe that by the authority and command of our Lord Jesus Christ, you receive from God this blessed forgiveness and assurance of all your sins? Then joyfully declare it by saying: By the grace of my Lord Jesus Christ, I do believe. Congregation: By the grace of my Lord Jesus Christ, I do believe. L: As you believe, even so may it be for you! On this confession of your sins, I announce the grace and peace of God to you, and by the authority and command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONGREGATION SINGS: [Red hymnal #315:13] Who can condemn me now? For surely The Lord is nigh, who justifies. No hell I fear, and thus securely, With Jesus I to heaven rise. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION Leader: May this peace of the Lord be with you always! All: Amen! DISTRIBUTION HYMN: #305 [Red Hymnal] 6 P a g e
