MONTHLY HUMOR THE JEWISH MOTHER The year is 2020 and the United States has elected the first woman as well as the first Jewish president, Susan Goldstein. She calls up her mother a few weeks after Election Day and says, "So, Mom, I assume you'll be coming to my inauguration?" "I don't think so. It's a ten-hour drive, your father isn't as young as he used to be, and my arthritis is acting up again." "Don t worry about it, Mom, I'll send Air Force One to pick you up and take you home. And a limousine will pick you up at your door." "I don't know. Everybody will be so fancyschmantzy. What on earth would I wear?" Susan replies, "I'll make sure you have a wonderful gown, custom-made by the best designer in New York." "Honey," Mom complains, "you know I can't eat those rich foods you and your friends like to eat." The President-to-be responds, "Don't worry Mom. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in New York; kosher all the way. Mom, I really want you to come." So Mom reluctantly agrees and on January 20, 2021, Susan Goldstein is being sworn in as President of the United States. In the front row sits the new President's mother, who leans over to a Senator sitting next to her and says, "You see that woman over there with her hand on the Torah, becoming President of the United States?" The Senator whispers back, "Yes, I do." Mom says proudly, "Her brother is a doctor."

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government, Boys State was founded in 1935 to counter the socialism-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a separate but similar program for young women called Girls State. At Boys State, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. Legion posts select high school juniors to attend the program. In most cases, individual expenses are paid by a sponsoring post, a local business or another community-based organization. New York Boys State will be held from June 27 to July 2, 2019 at SUNY Morrisville State College in Morrisville, NY. This year the New Hartford American Legion conducted interviews at New Hartford High School and selected the following candidates to attend Boys State: Anthony Rabbia, Gage Kilborne, Sachin John and Alex Mandia. Seton King was chosen as an alternate. The Legion will sponsor three of the candidates and the SAL with sponsor the fourth. Thank You to Executive Board members Glen Keesler and Harry Hertline for their time in conducting the interviews for us. New Hartford American Legion MEMBERSHIP REPORT Our next membership meetings will take place on Wednesday, April 17th starting at 6:30 PM. Please plan on attending our meeting and voice any concerns that you may have. As always, there will be refreshments served after the meeting. We currently have 659 members paid so far, which includes 28 new members. This gives us 94% of our quota of 695. NOTICE PLEASE READ!! "If you pay your Legion membership online, you will have to send the Post membership person proof that you paid your dues. There is a receipt at the bottom of your online confirmation to send to the Post. I cannot send your membership card until I receive this confirmation. Please send this in as soon as possible." This is a reminder that the 2018 Membership Cards have expired. The new 2019 cards are now out. You can renew your dues anytime. Our dues will remain at $40.00. Please note that if you receive a renewal notice from National and you have paid your 2019 dues, just disregard the notice and throw it away. If you are not sure you have paid your dues, just check your membership card, if it says 2019 on it, you are paid. Thank You. New Hartford American Legion Post 1376 would like to welcome the following new members to our Post. Please welcome: James L. Dixon, John P. Dellerba and Alan R. Gregory. As always we truly appreciate your continued support of our Post and we look forward to your continued support in the future. Janet Keesler & Dick Fountain Post Membership Chairpersons
