THE CROWN

PASTOR S COLUMN 2 Dear Friends, On Wednesday, August 15, we will celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a Holy Day of obligation. Masses will be celebrated: 8AM, 10AM & 7PM On this special day, on August 15, let us acknowledge our mutual mother in heaven and pray to her: SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY PRAYER FOR THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. The Assumption of Mary into Heaven, often shortened to the Assumption, is according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy, as well as parts of Anglicanism, the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. On 1 November 1950, in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of Mary as a dogma: By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen Have a blessed and good week, Fr. Marcin Szczypula

PARISH INFORMATION 3 THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Wednesday, August 15th is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times will be 8:00 am, 10:00 am and 7:00 pm. There will not be a 6:30 am Mass. ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Mission Office Fellow Missionary Disciples: We in the Mission Office are eternally grateful for your donation of $2,410.77 through the Missionary Cooperation Plan. Your willingness to welcome missionaries in your parish, listen to their stories, and respond with generosity is a true sign of Gospel love and missionary spirit. The missionaries supported through this initiative depend on your contributions in their work to proclaim the Good News of Jesus in our world, especially among those facing poverty, turmoil, and persecution. They walk along side the vulnerable and marginalized, respond to spiritual and material needs, and build bonds of love among communities in conflict. Now, with your contributions, they do these things in the knowledge that you stand with them as fellow members of the Body of Christ. 90 percent of every donation through the summer Missionary Co-op directly supports missionaries in their work. The remaining 10 percent supports the operations of the Mission Office, on whom missionaries from across the globe rely to build connections with supporters like you within the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thank you for joining us in continuing the mission of Jesus Christ in our world! TIME TO JOIN THE CHILDREN S CHOIR We are welcoming new members to our DI Children s Choir starting with practice on Sunday, August 26. When the congregation is preparing to listen to the readings and the Gospel and homily, the children (ages 3-10) are invited to come forward to meet a catechist who will process with them to the Reconciliation Room for a time of prayer and hearing the readings and Gospel in language they can more easily understand and identify with. The children receive a pamphlet to take with them to share with their family. Presently we need more volunteers who would prepare a lesson every few weeks and lead the children. LOCAL INFORMATION 2 7 STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the "Bread of Life" discourse from John's Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews' ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life--a marvelous promise, but this "reward" is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
