Liturgy Corner Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kings 19:4-8 Food for the Journey The reason Elijah was hungry is that he was traveling through the desert. The reason he was traveling through the desert is that Jezebel was chasing him. The reason Jezebel was chasing him is that she wanted to kill him. The reason she wanted to kill him is that Elijah had just embarrassed the priests of Baal, whose god couldn t send rain on command and Elijah s God could. God got him into this mess, and at one point, Elijah gave up. He sat exhausted in the desert and prayed for death. God gave him a snack instead. An angel appeared with cake and water. It doesn t sound like much, but on the strength of that food, Elijah walked forty days and forty nights more. Then he climbed the mountain of God. There, he discovered God, not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in silence. On days when we would like to give up, when we can t figure out the mess we are in, when we wish for more useful companions, when we feel hungry and lost, God finds us. In the simplest of meals, we receive strength to meet God at last on the holy mountain of life, shrouded in silence. Written by Paul Turner.
