December 2015 Newsletter Knights of Columbus Council 8909 St. Francis of Assisi Church, Castle Rock, CO 80104 Grand Knight s Corner by Cal Weatherly Brother Knights, This month has been a slower month for volunteer activities as we wind down towards Thanksgiving and Christmas. This allows us to relax and reflect on the meaning of the season, and how we can bring ourselves and our families closer together and closer to God. A few Knights volunteered at the Annual Breakfast with Santa Event and Craft Fair/Fundraiser for the Teen Youth Mission to Utah in Spring 2016. While not a specifically supported Knights event, thank you to those who did volunteer with their teens. Also in November we had the honor of visits by District Deputy John Lynn, and State Deputy Jim Caffrey. Among other business they attended the November Council Meeting to present Doug Wilson with the prestigious Shining Knight Award. This voluntary program honors First Degree Members who have: - Attended at least three council meetings - Volunteers to work on at least three Council projects - Receives his 2 nd and 3 rd degrees - Meets with the council field representative - Recruits on new member As you can see it is a full commitment for new members to achieve a Shining Knight Award, so congratulations Doug on earning this honor, and for representing our Council well in your first year! Lastly, I wish you all a very Merry and Blessed Christmas season. Thank you for all of your hard work and for being true men of faith, and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2016! Vivat Jesus! Fish Fry Update Lecturer s Section Earlier this year an exhaustive search for an adequate facility to host our annual fish fry was conducted. With the help of many brothers, we contacted multiple locations, however we were unable to find a facility that met our specific needs in the desired timelines. We will continue the search for a location, and if a suitable location is found we will notify the council and community as soon as one is located. if there are locations that brother Knights think of, please contact the council officers. Remember Dom Cingoranelli s report from the book The Gospel of Happiness? The message of the health and spiritual benefits of gratitude, positive psychology and the Christian practice is always relevant and even more so in this season of giving thanks to others and gratitude toward God. If you d like to read more on this subject, here is the book cover image in case you want to go get a version for yourself. In the mean-time, the fish fry for Spring of 2016 has been cancelled until further notice. Page 3

Minutes of General Council 8909 Meeting November 24, 2015 General Meeting called to order by GK, Cal Weatherly at 7:02 PM. Roll Call, absent officers: Chaplain, Advocate (excused) and Outside Guard. October Meeting Minutes were approved as published. Applications for Membership Two new applications were approved by the Council, Ed Coleman to reactivate his membership and Andrew (Drew) Storvik. GK Report The turnout was great for the shed & grounds cleanup, the breakfast and for Star Lighting. Thank you and congratulations to all for jobs well done! Treasurer Report Total account balance as of 10/31/2015 was $58,914.33 and the SFA account balance was $10,008.15. We did not do an Octoberfest as planned, so the $680.00 budgeted for this event is available for other projects. As of 10/31/2015, the Council is $7,479.96 net positive to budget. Bills and Communications Financial Secretary presented several bills for approval. The Council voted to approve payment. Financial Secretary Report of Receipts None. Trustee Report No Report. Chancellor Report No Report. DGK Report Need a Coordinator for the January 9 th Epiphany Party to be held after the 5:30 PM Mass. The free throw contest will be held on January 23 rd at Castle View Middle School. Dave Quintana will coordinate the event, but we need at least 3 cooks/servers and 3 contest recorders to work with Dave. A How To guide has been written to help inexperienced members in running an after Mass breakfast. Jim Trompeter reported that SFA has purchased enough Rediscover Jesus books to give as gifts to everyone attending Mass during Christmas. He asked the Council to approve a $400.00 contribution to SFA Church to help defray the cost of the books. The Council approved making the $400.00 donation. After Mass Breakfast The November breakfast went well but, as usual, the crowd after the 11:30 Mass was small. Father Brad has agreed that we will do only two breakfasts in the future, after 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM Masses. Memorial Mass Thanks to Matt Basalla for running the November 8 th Memorial Mass. Memorial Bricks All of the Memorial Bricks have been delivered and placed at the Knights gazebo. Maintenance on SFA Grounds An impressive amount of work was done on the parish grounds and the storage shed thanks to all of the volunteers. Website Kevin Zink has finished the website and established the domain name license. Knights will be able to read newsletters directly from the website from now on (in addition to other website functions). Solidarity Crosses The 50 Solidarity Crosses have been ordered and will be available for purchase by Knights before making them available for sale to the parish population. All proceeds will go to support persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Star Lighting Star Lighting revenue was $1800.00 with costs of $434.84 for supplies and a $200.00 fee to the Chamber of Commerce. Net proceeds will go to the SFA account. Future Events/ New Business Mid-Year meetings of K of C State will be held at the I-70 Crowne Plaza from December 11 13. Our Council Planning meeting will be held early enough on December 12 th to allow attendance at the meetings later that day. Financial Secretary Report Dues Notices will be slightly delayed, but will be mailed soon. Suspend December Meeting The Council voted to suspend the December meeting due to the busy Christmas season. 4th Degree Report Corporate Communion on 11/8/2015 followed by breakfast at Egg and I. Christmas Party on 12/19/2015 at Spring Valley Golf Club. Thanksgiving Dinner Proposal Rich Vap proposed that, in future years, the Council put on a Thanksgiving Dinner for the needy. This would be coordinated with other groups, including Douglas County Social Services and would be a good use of our facilities for a good cause. No action was taken at this time, but the idea is on the list for future planning. Field Agent Report No Report. District Deputy Report A Christmas Party will be held in conjunction with the December 11 th Mid-Year meeting. 4th degree was held at St. Mark s 40 people in attendance. Pax Christi will host a Soccer Challenge. Sent letter to Supreme regarding George Nowakowski retirement as Financial Secretary. Shining Knight Award State Deputy, Jim Chaffey was introduced for a special presentation of the Shining Knight Award to Douglas Wilson. Congratulations Doug! State Deputy Address The State Deputy addressed the Council on changes to the operation of K of C Councils being called for by Supreme. The basic thrust of the change is to work all activities through the Parishes rather than the Knights acting as an outside organization. Lecturer Dom Cingoranelli addressed us on the message from a book, Gospel of Happiness. A chapter of the book deals with the Way of Gratitude and the many benefits of expressing gratitude in your life. This is a fitting subject, as we are in the season of Thanksgiving.
