From the desk of Father James In the Catholic Church in the Unites States, the month of October is Respect Life Month. It is a time in our church when we remember that God calls us to respect all life from conception to natural death. Each and every human being is a unique creation originated by God and this creation is one that we need to honor and cherish at all times. It is not hard for us as a Christian people to see that there is much darkness that is all around us and this darkness provides the place for this culture of death to creep into all aspects of our lives. Sometimes without us even noticing that it has taken place. During these October days let us take time to once again reaffirm our stance of being a people of life and light. We take Christ s light out into the world and wherever this light is taken, then death and darkness cannot exist. There are a number of resources that our St. Francis Respect Life committee has provided for you to take a look out in the outer narthex of the church. Please stop by and check out the information provided there to see how you can get involved and help out this important ministry in our church. Have a blessed week! Fr. James In the Spirit of St. Francis To everyone who helped with set-up, serving and clean-up and those who shared their delicious salads and desserts for the Diane Zumpano funeral luncheon. To the Zumpano family for the beautiful flowers they left after the funeral. To Francis Gavin for the candles he is making for the chapel. To Joe Corello for the starter plants for the church garden. To Carlota Delos Reyes for keeping fresh flowers in the chapel. To Paul Mayer for all the hard work he has put into fixing up and maintaining the old hall. To The Springs for the beautiful pampas grass for the church sanctuary. To Steve Huffaker for his work keeping the church grounds beautiful. To Mike for keeping the floors of the chapel clean. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! 3

ST. FRANCIS SCHOOL: First Grade Showcase Hello everyone, we would like to take the opportunity to share with you the exciting things happening in the first grade classroom: A PARISH Our Religion lessons have been centered around God as our Heavenly Father. This week, we will be exploring God's holiness. We'll then talk about and demonstrate ways that we show reverence for God. A HOME The first grade classroom is alive with energy and enthusiasm! It s like my home because I play and I do work, and I feel loved. - Paige A SCHOOL In Math, we are learning about addition. The children have been learning what an addend and sum are and have been learning to add numbers with sums to 12. Math is [one of] my favorite because I like to add, said Anden. Ask one of our sweet first graders to share the doubles facts song with you. It's very catchy. Throughout the year, we continue to build our reading skills. Through learning the strategies of choosing right fit books and being introduced to independent, self-selected reading, the first graders have found a love of reading. I like reading, especially the Daily Five (when volunteers read with students in small groups), and my mom comes too! - Eleora The first graders are also budding authors. The children have learned the rules for writing sentences and are working on learning strategies to come up with ideas. We have written captions and sentences, and last week we wrote a descriptive paragraph about our favorite stuffed animal. It is amazing to see the children s creativity show through their writing! The children sponsored our first of three school Masses of the year on October 6th. Our theme was our patron, Saint Francis. I like Mass because I like to sing the songs. - Anden and Paige St. Francis is a special model for the first graders because of his love of God's creatures. Our social outreach project is to support the animals in the shelters. We will be raising awareness and funds for the Oregon Humane Society during the week of October 23 rd 31 st. A PLAYGROUND I love the [relay] games we play at P.E. in the big gym, and when we play at recess. - Eleora I play superheroes with my friends at recess; it makes me feel happy, like when I m at home. -Anden Recess is my favorite; we play catch the [imaginary] dog; it s a her and her name is Casey. -Paige - Miss Skipper and the First Grade Class Spiritual, moral and academic excellence under the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi. Sacramental News May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen Parishioner, Diane Zumpano died on October 10. Her funeral was on October 14. Catholic Corner Is it ever permissible to desire what belongs to another? If the owner is willing for us to acquire his possession by his gift or through some other honest means, it is permissible for us to desire it. St. Paul Family Catechism. Next Week: Which is the eighth commandment? Respect Life "In a world that can sometimes seem disheartening, Christians have a path to the future in lives of joy and love. We can't let the weight of the world crush the joy that's our birthright by our rebirth in Jesus Christ through baptism. If we cling to that joy, if we cling to God, then all things are possible. The only way to create new life in a culture is to live our lives joyfully and fruitfully, as individuals ruled by convictions greater than ourselves and shared with people we know and love. It's a path that's very simple and very hard at the same time. But it's the only way to make a revolution that matters." ~Archbishop Charles Chaput, Napa Institute Conference, July 27 2017 Sunday, October 22 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 952 Children are uniquely vulnerable to environmental hazards and exposures to toxic chemicals in the environment. Their bodies, behaviors and size leave them more exposed than adults to such health hazards. 6

Announcements Happening this Week: This weekend, October 21 & 22, is World Mission Sunday. Your prayers and generous support on World Mission Sunday directly benefit the mission church places like Central African Republic, Sri Lanka, Fiji and Tanzania, where churches are growing, filled with zeal for the faith, but struggling with lack of resources for outreach to communities in need. Envelopes can be found in the narthex and church entrances. There will be a meeting to discuss the future of the Hope Garden this Monday, October 23 at 6:00 pm in the parish center south classrooms. We are in need of planners and volunteers to keep this ministry going. If you are interested in helping, please join us! Lectors: our annual get together to bring you up to date with the ministry and minor changes is taking place this Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00 pm in the church. The Knights of Columbus will be hosting the monthly Rosary this Thursday, October 26 at 7:00 pm in the chapel. All are welcome to honor our Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary with us. Parish Announcements: There will be altar server training in church on Sunday, October 29 at 12:00 pm and Monday, October 30 at 7:00 pm. Liturgical Ministers are asked to contact the parish office before Wednesday, November 1 with your nonavailability dates for the next period, December through February, including December 8, Feast day of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 7:00 pm Mass; 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm Christmas Eve Masses, Midnight Mass and 9:30 am Christmas Mass; January 1, the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 9:30 am and February 14, Ash Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Wednesday, November 1 is All Saints Day. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. Plan on attending Mass on the Feast of All Souls, Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. At St. Francis we have a tradition of remembering in a special way those that have died this past year at the All Souls Day Mass. We have a parishioner who is taking old, used candles and melting them down to make new candles for use in the chapel. If you have used candles you would like to donate for this cause, please drop them by the parish office. Thank you! During the month of November, we as a parish are going to remember relatives and friends that have died through the displaying of pictures of them in the inner Narthex. If you wish to participate in the event, bring a COPY of their picture to Mass and place it in the basket located in the narthex. We need to have the pictures by Sunday, October 29 so that we can arrange them appropriately. The pictures will NOT be returned to you. Out of Parish: Oregon Knights of Columbus invites all to participate in Portland Life Chain 2017 on Sunday, October 29 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm in front of Planned Parenthood at 3727 NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Portland. This will be a peaceful, prayerful, public witness in solidarity with all pro-life citizens praying for our nation and its leaders, for people in crisis situations and for an end to the horrors of abortion.
