congratulations to newly ordained Deacon Gus Suarez! join us after the 10a Mass on 17 February for a celebration (bring a side to share, main dish & dessert will be provided)! A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?

A letter from Deacon Gus Dear Friends in Christ, My vocation story begins, as many stories do in our parish, in the Adoration Chapel. One evening while fighting off drowsiness, I decided that I had done enough talking and asked God what He wanted of me. In my heart I heard an answer: Feed my sheep. Confused, I did what any rational person would do I ignored it and went back to my reading. A few weeks later I asked the same question and received the same answer. Frustrated, I kept asking the same question, and kept hearing the same answer, albeit louder and clearer. While wondering what this could mean, I happened upon the history of the diaconate and learned that the earliest deacons had been entrusted with works of charity. Could this be where God was calling me? If so, why? God knows my unworthiness; He knows that there are many men in the parish who are much more worthy of such a calling. Why would He be calling me? Despite my great unworthiness, God seemed to confirm His call in the most ordinary and extraordinary of ways: through an unexpected run-in with a priest friend, who, unaware of what had happened, suddenly was moved to ask whether I was being called to the diaconate; through my somewhat surprised wife coming around to the idea; through my children s excitement when we discussed the possibility; and through the spiritual growth our family experienced during the early steps of my discernment. With the encouragement of my parish friends and family, I applied to the diaconate formation program. The program, which is comprised of a six month discernment class, four years of graduate theology classes, and six months of practicum classes, was more intensive than I could have imagined. Balancing my full-time job as an attorney, diaconate formation classes, and family life with four young children was a struggle. Previously confident in my roles as attorney, student, and father, I felt like I was failing at all three. It was through this weakness that I finally felt Christ s strength. I could not balance all these responsibilities on my own it was only through Christ that this could happen. I decided to work as hard as I could each day, and let Christ take care of the rest. I learned to trust in God s Will even when it seems overwhelming and, that when I am brought so low that I do not feel like praying at all, this is precisely the moment that I need to ask for God s Grace. The amazing thing is that God worked His Grace through all of you: through a parish family that sat by my wife at Mass to help her with the children while I was learning to serve at the altar; by giving our eldest son a love and enthusiasm for the Mass that has enabled him to serve alongside me; through the embrace of prayers from fellow parishioners; through the generous gifts of vestments and support from the Knights; by receiving an encouraging word at just the right time; and even through a smile from parishioners at Starbucks while I plugged away on a class paper. Whether you were aware of it, many of you have played an important role in my diaconate journey. Thank you! God has worked and continues to work in all of you! While the role of the deacon has many aspects, its most central feature is service. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders a deacon is conformed to Christ the Servant. One of my primary goals will be to serve you in such a way that you hopefully can encounter Christ the Servant. The beauty of this relationship is that I will also have the opportunity to encounter Christ in each of you! I don t yet know all of the ways that God will ask me to feed His sheep, but I look forward to the journey. I ask for your continued prayers as I begin my ministry as your servant. He must increase; I must decrease.
