St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Rest in Peace. Our sister Rose Hawickhorst passed away on October 30 at the age of 91. A simple memorial service was held on Friday, November 2, and then Rose was buried in St. Francis Cemetery. Kathy Hartke died unexpectedly as a result of complications from surgery. Her funeral Mass was at St. Francis on Tuesday, November 6; and the burial took place at SFA Cemetery. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them! Thanks! Ron Hartke told me how much he appreciated the quick response he got from our in-the-pew medical professionals when wife Mary Lynn had some difficulties at Mass a couple of weeks ago. Prayers Needed. In a parish this size, it is inevitable that a certain number of members will be standing in the need of prayer as an old song goes. Right now, we have several parishioners who are dealing with serious medical issues. Please watch the prayer list published in the bulletin and keep our infirm members in your daily prayers. We celebrated the Sacrament of Anointing on the feast of St. Luke (Oct. 18), but if you or a loved one would benefit from Anointing, please don t wait until the next communal celebration on February 11. Just let us know, and we ll gladly offer the Church s sacrament for your strength and healing. Bread for the World. SFA members donated $1315 to help Bread for the World combat world hunger. Way to go! Mass Stipends. There has been a surge in Mass stipends coming into the parish office. In many cases, people are requesting a specific date for a Mass. We will try to accommodate your wishes as best we can; however, we will not be able to meet every request. There will be cases when several people may ask for the same Mass on the same day. In such cases, it will be first come, first served. We trust in your understanding. We will try to publish the Mass intentions in the bulletin, but they will not be announced at Mass. OFM Meetings. I will be heading to St. Louis for Provincial Council meetings on the 15 th and will return late on the evening of the 17 th. Please pray for me while I am away and continue to ask the Holy Spirit to guide the work of the Council. In Case You Missed It Bishop Paprocki recently published this news release: I finished the St. Louis Marathon Sunday in 4 hours, 22 minutes and 53 seconds. I placed 743 out of 1749 overall, 5 out of 25 in my age division, and 508 out of 931 in the men's division. To date, $10,000 has been donated in support of my marathon run for vocations to help pay for the education and formation of our seminarians. I am grateful for the generous support for the training of the future priests of our diocese. New Collection. Over the years, the Diocese of Springfield, like many dioceses throughout the US, took up an annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Bishop Paprocki has decided that the need in our own diocese is so great that we will no longer take up the CCHD national collection. Instead, the bishop has instituted the Diocesan Campaign for Justice and Hope. That collection will be taken up next weekend, November 17 18. The funds collected will be used to alleviate the needs of the poor in our own diocese. Please do what you can to help. This collection gives Catholics an opportunity to fulfill their moral obligation to reach out in solidarity to those who suffer and lack basic human necessities. Like all Catholic ministries, it reaches out to the broader community, without regard to race, ethnicity or religion. This DCJH collection replaces the Catholic Campaign for Human Development collection. All the money collected will be given out, through a grant process, to local programs and organizations that give realistic hope to the poor to break out of the cycle of poverty. For more information, email DCJH@dio.org or visit the website at www.dio.org. Please use the envelope included with your set. Thank you. Homebound Ministers Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to the Homebound for Sunday, November 18th are Lenora Drees 857-3583 and Deb Runde 857-6281.

Thank you to all who prayed and fasted for an end to abortion, with a special thanks to attendees of our two Eucharistic Days of Prayer, and two hours of prayer at Planned Parenthood! To the Parents of Servers: I am trying to finalize the serving schedule for the Christmas Masses. As you know, on Christmas Eve there is a 5:30 pm Mass at which there are 4 servers (from Gr. 5-12) and a 10:30 pm Mass at which there are 12 torch bearers (from Gr. 4,5,6,7,8) and 5 servers (from Gr. 8-12). On Christmas Day there is a 7:00 am Mass at which we need 4 servers (from Gr. 4-12) and an 8:45 am Mass at which we also need 4 servers (from Gr. 4-12). If you and your family are planning to attend any of these Masses, and your child is interested in serving the Mass or being a torch bearer, please notify me. I am well aware that some families celebrate their family Christmas on Christmas Eve and some on Christmas Day. To help me avoid a lot of scheduling hassles, I would appreciate knowing if your child could and would possibly be able to serve any of these Masses. I ask that you please contact me at 821-9950 by Wednesday, November 21, if your child is willing and able to serve any of these times. This way I can have these assignments listed in the December schedule. I am also trying to schedule servers for the Masses on the holy day, January 1 (Mary Mother of God). Mass times are on Monday, December 31 (New Year s Eve) at 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm and on Tuesday, January 1 at 8:45 am and 10:30 am. If your child is willing to serve any of these Masses, please let me know by November 21. Thank you for any help that you can give me! Barb Runde God Will Provide The jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry 1 Kings 17:16 Sometime ago I was a parishioner at a parish where the pastor held a strong belief in the providence of God. At first I thought him a bit naïve, but that judgment changed when I saw the effects of his trusting spirit. The parish was in a low-income part of the city and had few financial resources. The pastor was a generous man and often gave from his own pocket when someone came to him in financial distress. The amazing thing is that there was always enough money to manage salary payments and take care of material things in need of repair. Just when the cupboard seemed empty, along came a surprising donation that helped the parish squeak by. (The pastor s kindheartedness was contagious. It stimulated the generosity of others.) I think of this when I want to hoard my time, money or personal talents. That s exactly the time when I need to be like the widow of Zarephath and share what I have, even if it seems meager. LIVING FAITH Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M.
