Today is the last Sunday of the Advent season, and we hear in the Gospel the anticipation of the feast we will celebrate in just one day. Christmas is coming! Jesus is on his way! We have had weeks to prepare for this momentous occasion, and now we are on the very verge of its arrival. The children in our midst can hardly contain their excitement as they wait to wake up on Christmas morning. The thrill of this coming moment is meant to remind us of the joy and anticipation we should all feel as we await the coming of Christ. Yes, Christmas is a great feast, but there is more here than a remembrance of the past or a fabulous party in the present. There is a looking-ahead as well. We celebrate as we anticipate. Much as Mary must have waited in wonder during the nine months of her pregnancy, we wait in hopeful expectation as Christians looking forward to being reunited with our Savior. Our future is full of hope. The deflating melancholy that afflicts many people after a holiday runs its course need not be the experience of the Christian waiting for Christ. We are always looking forward to something! There is never a moment when we have no cause for joy. Our lives are lived in a kind of unending advent as we stand in watchful waiting. Let us remember this as we enter into our Christmas Eve gatherings and festivities. As we join with family and friends to share in the good things of this life, may we carry with us the joy of knowing that even better things lie in store for us who welcome the infant Jesus into our hearts and homes. HANDICAPPED / FAMILY RESTROOM A handicapped / family restroom is available in the bridal room for those having trouble walking to the main restrooms.

DECEMBER 24 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT PAGE 3 Dear People of God, The Savior of the world has come down from heaven. Let us rejoice! This proclamation, filled with deep rejoicing, echoed in the night at Bethlehem. Today, the Church renews it with unchanged joy: the Savior is born for us! A wave of tenderness and hope fills our hearts, together with an overpowering need for closeness and peace. In the crib we contemplate the One, who stripped himself of divine glory in order to become poor, driven by love for mankind! Beside the crib the Christmas tree, with its twinkling lights, reminds us that with the birth of Jesus, the tree of Life has blossomed anew in the desert of humanity. The crib and tree: precious symbols, which hand down in time the true meaning of Christmas! In the heavens echoes the proclamation of the angels: To you a Savior in the City of David, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11). What a wonder! By being born in Bethlehem, the Eternal Son of God has entered into the history of each person living on the face of the earth. He is now present in the world as the one Savior of Humanity. For this reason we pray to him: Savior of the world, save us! Lord, save us from the wars and armed conflicts, which lay to waste entire regions of the world, from the scourge of terrorism and from the many forms of violence, which assail the weak and the vulnerable. Save us from discouragement as we face the paths to peace, difficult paths indeed, yet possible and therefore necessary paths, which are always and everywhere urgent, especially in the Land where you were born, Prince of Peace. And you, Mary, the Virgin of expectation and fulfillment, who holds the secret of Christmas, make us able to recognize in the Child, whom you hold in your arms, the heralded Savior, who brings hope and peace to all. With you, we worship Him and trustingly say: we need You, Redeemer of man. You, who know the hopes and fears of our hearts, come and stay with us. Lord, may the joy of your Nativity reach to the farthest ends of the universe! A Very Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year, Father Robert J. Cedolia, Pastor Deacon David S. Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord! The Word, Jesus Christ, was with God from the beginning and brought life to the world. What an awesome thought! Jesus being born in time reminds all of us that our birth is not an accident. God uniquely created each one of us and gave us life out of love. He designed us with purpose and blessed each one of us with gifts and talents. Jesus, Emmanuel and Son of God, shows us who we are and who we are meant to become!

EDUCATION NEWS FAITH FORMATION Sr. Benita DeMatteis, Faith Formation Director hsfaithformation@zoominternet.net Mrs. Rachael Hortsman, Administrative Assistant hs2faithformation@zoominternet.net 724-586-7276 N ot until 2023 will Christmas Eve again fall on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The proximity of these two solemnities highlights the theme of today s readings-the revelation of God s mystery. The biblical word mystery concerns a magnificent thing that will now be revealed in the last days to those who have faith. If we ponder the message of the angel with Mary, how utterly confused this young girl must have been! Yet she quickly gives her Fiat( Latin for let it happen ) to the angel s words. How does this story relate to your own life? Is God asking you to say yes to something? Or is there a challenge, burden, or hurt that you could offer God in faithful trust? Christmas Service Project Our students paired up with the Lighthouse Foundation this holiday season, donating gifts to help children in need. Because of their generosity, we donated over 100 gifts to help make the children's Christmas merry and bright. CLOSED; The faith formation office will be closed on December 25, 26, and 27. Christmas Season: Use the decorations of the season to focus your family on the true meaning of Christmas. Lights symbolize Jesus, the Light of the world, the tree recalls the Cross, which is our tree of life, and gifts remind us of God s gift to us in Jesus. All together they fill us with joy! Holy Sepulcher Catholic School will be closed December 25th - January 3rd. We wish you all a very blessed Christmas!

PAGE 7 THIS AND THAT HOLY SEPULCHER PARISH BUTLER, PA "She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." Today we celebrate that the prophetic dream of St. Joseph was fulfilled! Jesus is born! A Savior has come to deliver us--emmanuel, "God is with us." Christmas is a feast of fulfillment, a holiday of deep and enduring happiness not only because God became man and was born of a woman, but because along with his Incarnation, God brought us freedom. Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah who sets us free from the misery of our own sins. This is the ultimate gift of Christmas Day. We exchange gifts today as a sign of our love for one another to be sure, but also as a concrete, visible way to celebrate the gift that we have first received from God. We are free people! We are not slaves but rather the children of God whose priceless inheritance is to dwell in his kingdom for all eternity. On this most festive day of the year, we are invited to exult in this fact and spare little effort or expense to show our gratitude and joy. We only must be careful not to reduce our celebrating today to something less glorious, something less meaningful, or less profound. This is no mere secular holiday. This is not just a ritual of family gatherings, elaborate evergreen trees and sumptuous meals. Christmas is a holy day and as Christians it is our day in a most definite and undeniable way. The treats and trimmings are all signs that remind us of what lies ahead for those who accept the real gift of Jesus Christ: an unending banquet of eternal delights and divine gifts that will never fail to satisfy. Yes, Christmas is a little taste of heaven, the perfect gift that lies in wait for those who love the Lord. Merry Christmas
