Grand Knight s Corner Dear Brother Knights: As we start this new fraternal year I would like to give you a feeling for where I m coming from and the goals I have for this council in the coming year. First of all I would like to continue our support of our Seminarians. This year we will be supporting 5 gentlemen with ties to our parish community. These men include Justin Braun, Jeff Picou, Sean Hogan, Joe Keating, and brand new Seminarian Matt DiGiovanni. These men are our future priests and continue the legacy of St. Mark church in producing candidates for the priesthood. To support our seminarians, we will need to make our breakfast burrito ministry a success. I challenge you to come up with an idea to raise funds for our seminarians at other masses. The 9:30 parishioners have really stepped up over the years, let s see if we can t expand this ministry. Next, we need to continue our support of Pro- Life activities. There are several opportunities including visiting Planned Parenthood on the second Saturday of every month, praying a Pro-Life rosary on the 4th Sunday of each month after either the 9:30 or 11:30 masses, and supporting the 40 Days for Life event when it gets started. Our church community needs our support and I ask you gentlemen to find a way to get involved in a parish ministry. There are dozens of groups to be involved in and they all need your help. Don t make the Knights of Columbus your only activity in the church. St. Mark is a family oriented parish and we need to foster a sense of community with the families in the parish. There are several youth ministries to be involved in including the middle school and high school youth ministries, religious education, and teen ACTS. Third Saturday Adoration is a ministry started by one of our brothers, Roger Utz, years ago, but attendance by our brother Knights is really pretty light. Adoration is a time to communicate with our Lord and to offer him praise and honor. Adoration starts at 6:00 AM followed by a rosary at 7:00 AM and concluding with mass at 7:30 AM. I urge all of you to support this activity. It is not asking for too much of your time and with Father George s daily mass, you will be on your way home by 8:00 AM. The Knights are about charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. We have activities that encompass all of these virtues. I challenge all Knights, active or inactive, to find an event and get involved. If you are inactive I m asking you to attend at least 2 meetings a year on the 2nd Thursday at 6:30 PM. Who knows, you might like what you see. I m also asking every Knight to be fully engaged in at least 2 activities this fraternal year, that s all. Go to www. kofc12553.org for more details on activities. Bless you and your family and let s make this a successful year. Fraternally, John Towne Grand Knight Garrett New Membership Director Dr. An- drew Garrett has agreed to return as our Membership Director, replacing Jim Hawk. His email address is: agarrettdc@verizon.net. Andy had previously served as our Membership Director, so we are fortunate to have him back. We all wish Brother Jim Hawk well and will we will miss him. Jim returned to his hometown of Chicago August 1st. He did an outstanding job as our Lecturer and Mermbership Director this past fraternal year. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. 2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. 3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. 4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. 5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation. St. Mark Lifeteen The youth of our parish are the future, and the teens are the very-soon future at that! Our Lifeteen CORE is looking for a few good men to help assist with the teens. There are a variety of ways to serve, based on your interests and availability. If you feel called to serve, please contact Lindsey Whitis or Bret Curran. KofC License Plates KC Softball The Knights did it again! After a thrilling regular season the Knights ended up with a second seed in summer softball playoffs with a 5 and 3 record. In the first game the Knights played the James Wood (not the old guy, his softball team) in 100 degree temperatures and won a hard fought 9 to 8 battle that included blood, sweat, and vomit. 6 Order your KofC plates and show your pride as a Knight of Columbus. Seminarian Joe Keating Brother Knights, I want to thank you for your generosity this weekend, and throughout the year. Y all have been so supportive of me in my pursuit of God s call. As I experience the richness of our faith in Rome and the richness of Christian history in Europe, I will be thinking of everyone back home, and looking forward to the day I can come back and share pictures and stories of what I have witnessed. I plan to travel and take lots of pictures whenever I can, so y all can see all the cool Catholic stuff from that part of the world. As I mentioned briefly tonight at the 4:00 Mass, we need more priests (and religious brothers and sisters) to carry out the mission which Christ has entrusted to his Church. Vocations to the religious life begin with Catholic families. Our council is made up of such a great group of men; I know that there are more vocations to be had from our parish! Some of them may even come from your very own family. I pray that you would continue to support us by sending your sons and daughters to do the work of winning souls for Christ. The gospel antiphon from evening prayer tonight pretty much sums it up. It comes from Matthew chapter 9: So great a harvest, and so few to gather it in; pray to the Lord of the harvest; beg him to send out laborers for his harvest. Most of all, I just wanted to say thank you for being my parish family in Denton. Though I wasn t here long, this will always feel like home to me. May God bless you and everything you do to build up the Body of Christ. I look forward to hearing from y all, and I will continue to send you updates on my studies and adventures in seminary. You can always reach me at this email address or on Facebook or Skype. In Christ, Joe Keating The Knights then took on the number 4 seed, The Point, who had just knocked off the number 1 seed by scoring 12 runs in the top of the last inning to win 21 to 13. In the championship game the Knights scored 9 runs in a two out rally early in the game to demoralize The Point. The Knights cruised to a 15 to 9 victory and a second consecutive championship in the Wednesday night league. The Knights open the fall league on Wednesday August 17th at 9:00 PM with a chance to sweep all three leagues this year. If you can t come out and play, at least come out and be an athletic supporter. Knights donate $190,000 The Western Metroplex Chapter of the Ft Worth Diocese of the Knights of Columbus donated slighty over $190,000 to Bishop Vann at the Religious Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, August 2nd. UNT Council 14789 Seminarians Brother Eugene Flynn was accepted into the seminary and Brother Matt Di Giovanni is leaving for the seminary. Both of these men deserve praise and prayers for vocations. Please congratulate them and pray for them as they continue their vocations. Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism
