301 I St SW, Quincy WA, 98848 (509) 787-4491 www.qfmc.org Worship Service: 10:30am October 21, 2016 To CONNECT with God, each other & the world as we experience PURPOSE, BELONGING & LIFE-CHANGING discipleship Kevin Keenan +1 Most people have specific days they look forward to. I ve had this day, October 21, 2016 marked on my calendar for more than four years. In my lifetime, I have thought of few other days more than this one. However, unlike my anniversary and holidays which I anticipate with joy, it has been with a mixture of sadness, and hope that I have awaited today. This is the day that I outlived my brother Reid by one day. Almost from the time of his death on Aug 22, 2012, I wondered if my life would be longer or shorter than his. I can say without exaggeration that I have thought of my own death almost every day since his passing. This may seem morbid to you, but for me it has served as a reminder that I am mortal, and that I want to count my days so that I can make my days count (my paraphrase of Psalm 90:12). I am the youngest of four brothers: Scott (1954), Reid (1957), Lindsay (1959), and
me (1961). Reid was my hero. I tried to be like him. I wanted to do the things he did, but mostly I couldn t. He was an Eagle Scout and I was a tenderfoot. He could fearlessly wheelie his motorcycle the length of our block and I could ride a bike (and even without training wheels in my teen years). He could hit a baseball farther than any other kid in our neighborhood. When we played basketball in our driveway, he d assume the character of his alterego, Kevin Keenan. I m not sure where he came up with that name or why, but when he d make a basket over my outstretched arms, he d give the running commentary, Kevin Keenan shoots and SCORES! I lost more than my fair share of games to Kevin Keenan. Reid and I had epic ping pong battles. Sometimes we d play for 2 hours without a break. When he would come from behind and take the lead he would say, There s a new leader to Soccer-Control. I hated it every time he said it. He also had a wicked backhand smash that he affectionately called The Hawk. You can probably guess how I felt about The Hawk. My brother Reid wasn t perfect, but he had a major impact on my life. In his early teens he surrendered his life to God. He modeled for me how to follow Jesus. When I was about to jump the guardrails, he steered me back on course. He lived a life that counted. He served God and others with diligence and excellence. He was a good brother and one of the most important people in my life ever! Even now, more than 4 years after his death, I think of him frequently. I can still hear his voice as I recall our many phone calls Brother Shaun, how s it going? And I would reply, Kevin Keenan, how you doing?! I love you Kevin Keenan! I will see you on the other side. Your brother and friend, shaun PS- Reid lived 20,219 days. Today I have lived 20,220 days. I don t know how many more days I have in this life, but I intend to make them count. How about you?
