A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Our sympathy to the extended family and friends of Kathryn Marang whose funeral was held at the Funeral Home this last week. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace. Help me express my gratitude to Bishop LeVoir who is with us this Sunday to confirm our candidates. His presence and ministry to us is not only a nice thing, it is a strong preference of the Roman Catholic Church. Some other rites and most Orthodox Churches baptize, confirm, and give first communion all at the same liturgy (like we will see in those who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil). Our Church has separated this out so that the Bishop of the Diocese, as much as possible anyway, is able to meet and confer the sacrament on those of his diocese (and gives his parishioners a chance to encounter him, too). Lumen Gentium 11 (Vatican II) taught that "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. Confirmation is not the equivalent of graduation nor is it the recognition of ones adulthood. It is the complete and full initiation into the Church. It is the beginning! Too often we might be tempted to say this sacrament is our confirmation that we wish to be Catholic - in Reality it is the Spirit s confirmation of us as full members. For our newly confirmed members, they are empowered with the gifts of the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel. In fact, the Catechism reminds us that to be confirmed, one must "be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witnesses to Christ" (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1319). For all of us who have been confirmed, may our own participation in this liturgy, or the Easter Vigil in a few weeks, inspire us to stir into flame the gifts of the Spirit that were given to us in our confirmation, that we may be disciples guiding disciples. ~ In Christ, Fr.
