ALL THINGS CONSIDERED KATHIE AND AMANDA In 2007, Kathie Anderer and the other staff members of the preschool at St. George s Lutheran Church in Brighton came to St. MM. The change came about after the leadership of St. George decided to end their relationship with the preschool. Since the move was made, preschool has become a special part of the ministries of St. Mary Magdalen. Faithful readers of my column know Kathie Anderer is retiring this spring from her role as Magdalen s Preschool director, bringing to an end her preschool career of 32 years. She will certainly be missed, but she promises to come back occasionally to help out and get her kid fix. Amanda Faiola, who has assisted Kathie this last year, has accepted the role of becoming the new director. She is a young mother and will bring lots of experience and a great deal of enthusiasm to the position. Thanks, Kathie and welcome Amanda! MEMORIAL DAY began after the Civil War to honor those who died in the battle to preserve the Union and to free the enslaved. Michigan was the first state to make Decoration or Memorial Day a legal holiday (1871). For almost 150 years the purpose of the day has been expanded. It began as a day to remember and honor all those who have died in our nation s wars; and has grown to include remembering and honoring all our deceased friends and family as well. MEMORIAL DAY LITURGY I hope you will join me on Monday morning for the 9 am Liturgy. We will pray for all our deceased relatives and friends who have gone before us in faith, especially those whose cremains rest here in the Resurrection Tower and at the Shrine of the Cross. Dan Tuthill placed the antique French cross on the pillar and brought in the altar and ambo we use at the picnic. There will also be folding chairs for the assembly. Weather permitting, the Liturgy will be on the plaza. (If the weather does not cooperate, we will move into the chapel.) DSA 2018 The Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA) funds almost 100 different services and programs across the 10 county area of the Diocese of Lansing. These services affect the lives of thousands of people. The Witness to Hope Campaign funds several endowments to support the future of several different ministries; DSA funds the day to day operation of these ministries. Please join me in making a gift or a pledge to DSA 2018! Fr. A covenant is a solemn agreement made between two parties and was usually sealed in blood. In ancient times, blood was considered the source of life. To sprinkle two people with the same blood bonded them as closely as if they were blood relatives. Hebrews 9:11-15 On Yom Kippur, the high priest sacrificed a goat on the altar in the temple. Then he took some of the blood into the holiest place in the temple sanctuary where only he was allowed to go. There, he sprinkled that blood as a renewal of the covenant made at Mount Sinai, and prayed that God would forgive the sins they had committed during the previous year. This ritual is the backdrop for today s reading from the letter to the Hebrews. Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 Mark s description of the course of the meal provides us with a view of one of the earliest forms of the Eucharist as it was celebrated at the time Mark wrote his gospel. It is different from the description offered by Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, and by John in his gospel. But the essentials are the same; the cup is the blood covenant of old, and in drinking the cup disciples (through all ages) share in the salvation history to the present. Reflect: When you receive Holy Communion and hear the words, Body of ChristBlood of Christ, what are some of the thoughts and feelings that surface in you?

ST. MARY MAGDALEN BRIGHTON, MI Since the summer of 2002, St. Mary Magdalen has traveled with the National Relief Network approximately 12 times, traveling to New Orleans, LA, to Iowa, Moore, OK and to West Virginia. We have worked to help communities rebuild from hurricane damage, flood damage and picked up debris from tornadoes. If I added up the lists of participants over the years, St. Mary Magdalen has sent over 250 youth and adult chaperones to serve those in need, helping both individual home owners and communities as a whole. NRN is a great opportunity for a great many things! If you are interested in learning more about the experience, please contact Margaret Callaghan at yminister1@gmail.com or ask anyone wearing a bright yellow NRN t-shirt these next couple weekends. Our trip this year is the week of July 29- Aug 3 rd. Anyone 13 years old and older is welcome to come. There is still time and space available if you are interested in participating this year. RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS Roxanne Hundsrucker The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Today we celebrate this movable feast that follows the Sunday after Pentecost. On this feast day, we celebrate our Triune God. There is only one God. God is three Persons in one Nature. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All three persons are equally God and cannot be divided; one of the Greatest mysteries of our Catholic faith. This holy day makes me think of St. Patrick and his use of the shamrock for teaching of the Trinity; one stem with three small leaves like our God, one supreme being and three separate persons. Journey with Jesus (JWJ) Vacation Bible School Monday, July 30th through Friday, August 3 Registration for Journey with Jesus is in full swing. All families with children ages 4 through high school should have received the registration via e-mail, for both participants and volunteers. We have additional registration forms in the gathering area of the church. We are still in need of many adult hands to help during the week of JWJ. Please register as soon as you get the e-mail if you are able to volunteer during this awesome week. The registration deadline is July 23, 2018 YOUTH NEWS Margaret Callaghan Next weekend we will celebrate and pray over our graduating class of 2018. For 22 years now, I have witnessed many teenagers grow up in this parish. I met you and your young families and we became friends; with some, we became family. With my little ones (at that time) in tow, those days of graduation seemed so far away. This weekend the graduation class of 2018 includes the first of my three children. Many of you may still remember Fr. Dave naming my first born Baruch! If you hear sniffles in the back of the church during the prayer over the graduates, it will be me! Many of the teens we will pray over next weekend, I have personally known and watched grow these past 6-7 years. This is a very exciting time for them, and I could not be more proud of the young men and women they have become! Congratulations to the whole class of 2018! CHARITY & JUSTICE WATER FOR FLINT The pictures below show some of the water taken to the NEW Life Center in Flint this past week. Two vehicles, loaded to capacity, carried almost 3000 bottles of water that were donated by parishioners. Sister Judy and Sister Carol wanted to tell all of you how grateful they and their clients are for your generosity. Did You Know? Pope Francis is the first pope to have been ordained a priest after the Second Vatican Council (in 1969)? Whether you re available to attend or not, we invite you to submit then and now pictures from your wedding day and today, so we can incorporate them into a video during the communion meditation. Since many of our couples have moved away over the years, we re also asking family and friends to pass this message on, so we can have as much participation as possible. Please mark the date on your calendar and send us digital copies of your photos to: marriage@saintmarymagdalen.org so we can honor you that day!
