May 1, 2016 Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Apostle Update: Apostles Bartholomew (Nathanael) and Simon the Zealot Are still available. Please contact parish office. Sixth Sunday of Easter "Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid." Can we hear Jesus saying these words to us? It's often easier for us to imagine the apostles hearing this consoling command and following it, than to think of it really applying to us. After all, Jesus was standing right there with them. Can he really expect US, two thousand years later, not to be troubled by the cares of life? But the fact is that the gift Jesus was giving to his disciples, he has also given to us: "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name." Jesus told them that peace would be theirs, and it can also be ours. Peace is, in fact, one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, along with love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. These fruits don't come from us. They aren't just for people with certain cheery personalities. These fruits come from God straight into our souls through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Through our baptism and confirmation, Jesus gives us the gift of his Spirit. And then his peace, and so many other gifts can truly become ours if we open our hearts to them. This is a reality that we can contemplate whenever worry or anxiety strike. Whatever may be disturbing our inner peace--whether it be a family feud, some kind of physical suffering, or a difficult decision to make at work or school--we can take comfort in knowing that we can find peace even in the midst of the problem. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you," Jesus says. But he continues, "Not as the world gives do I give it to you." In other words, God doesn't promise to take away the struggle in an instant. But he does promise to give us his peace even in the midst of life's trials and tribulations. High School Teens! Come and join us for the following Life Teen Events at St. Bernard s: 5/15-"Teens Going Deeper" (After the 11am Mass in the Game Room) - During this event, we will have a time of singing, Gospel reflection from the teen perspective, sharing, and prayer! Come and join us if you can! 5/22-"Baccalaureate Mass and Reception" (During and after the 11am Mass) - We would like to recognize, pray for, and celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating high school seniors at a Baccalaureate Mass on Sunday, May 22nd. A cake reception will follow in the Parish Hall and all are welcome to join the celebration! 6/6-"MATT Monday" (8:30am Mass with Breakfast After) - We will meet for the 8:30am Mass and will then go out to breakfast to talk about any theology topic that you like! Shannon Hards, Director of Youth Ministry sbcyouth@diocesephoenix.org Faith Formation News All First Communion children are invited to dress in their First Communion clothes and lead us in May Crowning next Sunday, May 8th, at the 9:00am Mass. Please see Dr. Rutkowski or Mrs. Stine before Mass, so that we can put your name in the basket to be chosen to crown the Blessed Mother. Please sit with your families during Mass and then come to the back of the Church, after Communion, to line up for the procession. All children will present flowers to Mary before she is crowned. Vacation Bible School is the week of June13th through June 17th! Registration will begin in mid-may. There will be more information in next week s bulletin. May 1, 2016 Ministry of Care There will be a quarterly Ministry of Care meeting on Monday, May 16, 2016 in the parish hall ministry room at 7:00PM. The theme for this quarter will be mercy, in solidarity with the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy pronounced by Pope Francis. It is easy to perceive that the Ministry of Care is all about mercy. We will pursue this avenue of thought and discuss the impact and compassion the ministry provides in furthering the lives of all God s people. There will also be an update on the Missions and a short summary for the quarter from all the facilities the Ministry of Care visits on a regular basis. All are welcome. If you feel called to the Ministry of Care please attend our meeting or contact Cristina Dixon at 480-816-1889 or bcdixon@msn.com.
