The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph December 30, 2018 Mass Intentions Happy New Year, Notes From The Pastor's Pen Monday, Dec. 31 6:30 am Poor Souls 5:30 pm Leslie I was looking at some top ten lists for this last year and noticed some of the music lists, where I didn t know any of the songs or the artists. After a little looking I found some other top ten music lists that I did know a few of them, but I guess I m getting older. I remember when my parents wouldn t have heard of any of the popular music, or even some of my older siblings who hadn t even heard of some of the most popular artists, and now that is me. But I also look back at this time of year and recognize the things I remember from years past, the things I remember from 20, 30, or 40 years ago that those who might know all the top ten music for this year are not aware of and haven t experienced. And also at times those older than me exposed me to music from 50, 60, or more years ago that I wasn t aware of but now appreciate and enjoy. In all parts of our life we can look at things and regret what we don t have or know, or dismiss what others know or think and only consider from our own point of view. Or we can be open to learning from others, to be grateful for what we have and sharing that knowledge and experience with others and open to their sharing with us. Looking at this in regards to the music I have to admit I listened to some of the music that was in the top 10, a few I like, a few were OK to interesting, and some I was quite happy to have not been familiar with. But I know from 30 years ago some of what I thought was great is still there, and others really weren t, you could say they didn t stand up to the test of time (to be kind). Hopefully as we enter a new year this reminiscence of the last year and of all our years helps us to see the many gifts that God has given us and appreciate them. Recognize some of the gifts others have that we do not, and be glad for them and appreciate them. Realize that some of these gifts can and should be shared, and others may have just been for a certain time and place. And also be able to admit that only with time have we been able to really recognize some of the gifts, and recognize that some that we treasured were not the gifts we thought they were. As you start a new year may you take the time for some reflection to appreciate and learn from your past and consider that God gives us freedom and realize that what we have done matters. But also to realize that whatever our past, we have the freedom and responsibility to let that past help us, inform us, guide us, in what we do today and in the year to come. May we be open to all of God s blessings in the New Year. Peace, Fr. Nick Tuesday, Jan. 1 Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God 8:00 am Jack & Shirley Murphy 10:00 am NPA Thanksgiving Wednesday, Jan. 2 Sts Basil the Great & Gregory Nazianzen, Bishops & Doctors of the Church 6:30 am Hélène Schweitzer 12:00 pm Bernardo-Reyes Fam. Donations to help defray the cost of this program are gratefully accepted. Drop it in the basket with your rose.

Parish School of Religion Update December 31 st is the Feast of the Holy Family. As the principal of the PSR this feast is especially close to my heart. The whole goal of PSR is to help families be formed in the faith. The Feast day began in French Canada around 1643 as a devotion to the Holy Family. The devotion spread over time. In 1921, Pope Leo XIII was able to see the beginning of the breakdown of the family and instituted the Feast of the Holy Family into the Liturgical Calendar. He wanted to instill into Christian families something of the faithful love and attachment that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph had as the Holy Family of Nazareth. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote, The family has an essential role in the divine plan of salvation (Familiaris Consortium). Jesus came into the world, as all of us, through a family and thus, God calls us to share Christ and His Church with the world through our Families. The Church promotes the Holy Family as the example for all families. You are invited to Capture Memories for a Lifetime We are updating our parish pictorial directory and have partnered with Lifetouch Directories to produce the new directory. Sign-ups begin at our Epiphany Open House on Sunday, January 6th and continue after all masses on the weekend of January 12-13, January 19-20. Or you will be able to go to our website to sign up online. (That is not set up yet, just a heads up that it will be available. We are all excited about bring our parish family information up-todate, and the directories are always so much fun to look through. Don t you want to put a name to the people you see in Church all the time. Help us make this project successful, sign up as soon as you are able. Overwhelming Generosity from Parishioners for the Giving Tree The St. Vincent De Paul Society offers heartfelt thanks to all of the generous parishioners who fulfilled a Christmas wish from our Giving Tree this year. We had requested a record number of gifts, because the need in our area was so great, and to our astonishment, you answered every request. The nearly 200 ornaments on the Giving Tree included 93 specific gifts for families we assisted throughout the year in St. Joseph parish, plus the needy in St. Augustine, Christ the King, Blessed Teresa, St. Matthew, Old Cathedral and Holy Name of Jesus parishes. An additional 48 ornaments requested family baskets to be filled with blankets, family games, laundry detergent, personal care items and warm socks, mittens and scarves. Again, every request was answered, including more for buckets of cleaning supplies and grocery gift cards. We were overwhelmed by the incredible kindness of St. Joseph parishioners, as were the representatives of each parish we assisted. All of the recipients asked us repeatedly to thank you for your generosity and to let you know they love you. Thank you so much for making this Christmas better for so many and for participating in our most successful Giving Tree ever. God bless you.
