Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent and Good Friday. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday until they celebrate their 59th birthday are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are bound to this regulation may only eat one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. These practices are designed for spiritual growth. Catholics are not to excuse themselves lightly from these prescribed minimal penitential practices.

FROM FR. JOE I want to continue offering adoration Wednesdays at Cathedral, but need your help. As we enter the season of Lent, could a few more parishioners and friends of the Cathedral commit weekly to spending an hour with our Lord? We are especially in need of adorers from 10 am till 4 pm. If you have friends outside our parish, please share this message with them. The Cathedral belongs to us all and is a unique place of prayer for the entire Catholic community of North East Wisconsin. Originally, my predecessor, along with Mrs. Connie DeMeuse proposed holding adoration at Cathedral from 4 pm to 8 pm, closing with Benediction. Thanks to Connie DeMeuse, Rose Snorek and other key volunteers, we have for nearly a decade offered adoration from 9 am to 8 pm. In this time, new people have joined this ministry but many have not been able to continue. It has born great fruit for our parish and our entire diocese. We will definitely continue to offer this devotion from 4 pm till 8 pm, but could we continue all day? For this to happen, ideally we need three people for each hour. The practice in our Church, is to have at least two committed to this ministry per hour. Could we find 33 people, covering 11 hours, embracing this prayer ministry for one year? Please call Sonia Hitt in our office for more information and join us in this prayer ministry. I also want to thank Rose Snorek for her many years of dedication and service to this ministry. After nearly 10 years of service, she is stepping down as chief coordinator of adorers. This of course means we need someone willing to press on with her vision. Please give this position some prayer and thought. Again, Sonia will be able to share with you what is involved in this unique position. God bless you and let s have a very fruitful Lent! In Christ, ~Fr. Joe
