It is not mere coincidence that iconographers began to illustrate God the Father in a similar way. By showing the Father as the Ancient of Days they were imputing the quality of long suffering, and eternal mercy by depicting Him with long flowing white hair, a visualization of eternal mercies flowing from heaven. Many times in family life also, it is the father who has the thankless job of laying down the law in the family. Frequently moms admonish their children: Just wait until your father gets home from work. His task is to admonish or warn his children of their sinful behavior in the anticipation that they will return to their senses. Curiously, this is the exact same coif of Saint John the Baptist, long, flowing hair, which evokes the solicitude of the Father, the Priest, the Prophet for the return of their sinful people. Do not be afraid to admonish/warn your children of their obligations of regular church attendance and practice of the sacrament of reconciliation. Invoke the heavenly intercession of the Holy Prophets Elijah and John the Baptist to give you the words to express the admonishments in a gentle way for the return of sinners to our heavenly Father. Thursday is a Simple Holyday. The 7:00 liturgy will be held outdoors at the St. John Paul II Chapel. There is limited bench seating. You can also bring your own chair or grab one from the storage room as you walk down. After the liturgy vehicles will be blessed in conjunction with the Feast. (Elijah was taken up into heaven on a fiery chariot. )

Mariapoch Icon Coming to St. Joe s The authentic replica icon of Our Lady of Mariapoch will be in residence at St. Joe s from July 17 through July 23. The icon was painted in Hungary and was blessed at the Basilica Church in Mariapoch. During the blessing ceremony, the replica was actually touched to the original icon that wept four times during the last 325 years in Mariapoch. (You can view the video of the actual blessing of the icon by going to parma.org or shrineofmariapoch.com.) After the icon arrived in the USA in June, it was mounted in a wood enclosure that was crafted by Greg Majoros. The icon will be on display for veneration, meditation and prayer. On July 19 at 7:00 p.m. we will celebrate a Moleben Service to Mary as our way of commemorating the visit of the icon to our church.

Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the First Six Ecumenical Councils Today on our liturgical calendar our Church commemorates the Holy Fathers of the first six ecumenical councils: Nicea (325), Constantinople I (381), Ephesus (431), Chalcedon (451), Constantinople II (553) and Constantinople III (680). These great councils are of major significance because they formulated important Christological and Trinitarian definitions. The Church today honors the collective witness of the participants in these councils to authentic, true doctrine. The following are some of the significant acts of the first six ecumenical councils commemorated today: Nicea condemned Arianism which denied the divinity of Christ. Constantinople I upheld the divinity of the Holy Spirit. Ephesus condemned Nestorianism which denied the real unity of the divine and human natures in the Person of Christ and also defined Theotokos (Bearer of God) as the title of Mary, Mother of the Son of God made Man. Chalcedon affirmed the humanity of Christ. Constantinople II excommunicated the followers of Nestorianism which taught that the Virgin Mary s title as Mother of God was erroneous. Constantinople III condemned the doctrine of Monotheletism which held that Christ had only a divine will. These six councils together with Nicea II (787) form the core of Church doctrine and discipline. The major preoccupation of the Church in its first eight hundred years (the Patristic Age ) is its concern to safeguard the reality of the triune God and the mystery of God Incarnate in the Person of Jesus Christ. Significantly, for the most part, these early councils are the only ones on which the whole believing world today agrees. Altogether about 2,000 representative of the undivided Church participated in the council meetings.
