WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL FOUNDED BY THE JESUIT FATHERS CIRCA 1849 NEWSLETTER 4TH MAY 2018 LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU JOHN 13:34 Exploring the Mass With Cardinal Vincent Nichols This week we listened to Cardinal Nichols teach us about the Liturgy of the Word. We learnt that the liturgy of the Word, typically consists of three readings: a reading from the Old Testament, a non- Gospel reading from the New Testament, and a reading from the Gospels; the first two readings are done by a lector (a reader), and the Gospel is proclaimed by the priest or deacon. A responsorial psalm and a Gospel acclamation divide the three readings. The priest then delivers the homily, which usually focuses on one of the readings or on that day s special occasion The Cardinal taught us to focus on key words we hear and reflect on these when at Mass and act on them. Dear parents, A successful Spring Music Concert! I write this after our very successful Spring Concert, what a wonderful evening of music, singing and dancing I am so very proud of each and every child who went on stage and performed. The concert showcased all the talented pupils we have in school. I would like to say thank Mr Lopez, who joined us on a part time basis in October, for the whole class ensembles. It was wonderful seeing the range of music the children are receiving as part of their curriculum. I would also like to thank Denis Cassidy for the string lessons he is delivering to the whole of Year 2, the ensembles and the soloists. Again, it was lovely to see the progress of the pupils from first becoming familiar to with a string instrument to entering Royal Academy of Music Grades. Today we congratulated Lalou in Year 6 and Melanie in Year 5 for achieving their grade 1 with merit. I would like to thank Jan Cassidy, who was unable to be there on Wednesday, however she prepared our bell musicians so professionally that their performance was flawless even with a child being absent. Jan teaches our woodwind instruments and piano. Daniel M in Year 4 has achieved his grade 1 clarinet again a huge achievement for a young student. Finally I need to say thank you to Miss Hallsworth for her artistic direction and organisation of the Crazy Choir, dance club and musical theatre. The children were all amazing on stage and looked so professional up there. I was struck by the enjoyment the children showed and this is thanks to Miss Hallsworth s endless energy! I know those who were there were amazed by all the children s talents and will join me in recognising Infinity and Iris duet. I wish you all a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend. I pray the weather is good to us. See you Tuesday 8th May.

STOP PRESS STOP PRESS STOP PRESS SUMMER FAIR CHANGE OF DATE It has come to our attention that the South West Fest Parade and Fair in Pimlico is taking place Saturday 30th June, to avoid a clash of events we are going to change our Summer Fair to Saturday 23rd June 12pm 3pm Please put the new and final date in your diary! We are also needing to change the day for the Summer Fair planning meeting to TUESDAY 15th MAY 3pm in the school. The date has been changed in hope we can have as many parents as possible attend. Please try to make the planning meeting. Each class will be allocated part of the Fair to run and organise. If you are unable to attend the meeting on Tuesday 15th May but can help at the Summer Fair please see Mrs Hughes and we will write your name down. Thank you in advance.

Big Pedal Thank you to all who cycled and scootered to school last Wednesday. Despite the weather we had over 80 bikes!!! Mrs Hughes has submitted the information on to the Westminster website. I would like to remind you of the cycle dates/ events this coming week: On Wednesday 9th May the BLING MY BIKE theme is the royal wedding. Everyone who decorates their bike or scooter will win a small prize and the children will choose 4 overall winners. On the 10th/11th May there is free cycle training for years 3/4. Please return the forms as soon as possible if you wish your child to be included. Royal Wedding Tea Party To mark the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle we are going to have a tea party Friday 18th May from 2pm. Our weekly Celebration Assembly will be at 1.30pm and the tea party will take place in the playground (weather permitting) immediately after. The children can come to school wearing red, white or blue that day and are more than welcome to bring Union Jack flags. Please provide food for the tea party. Your child s class teacher will advise you as to what you are to provide.
