Brother Knights, Due to the success of our St. Patrick s Day Celebration at Sacred Heart, the idea was presented to hold our first Oktoberfest away from our Hall. The date will be Sept. 22 nd since that is when the preferred band was available. A time and place will be determined later, but will most likely be at Sacred Heart. Our Blitz membership drive, spear headed by Sean Johnson at St. Michael s, was held March 18 th. A lot of interest was generated with 4 potential candidates. Everyone enjoyed the pancake breakfast, 4 th Degree and Squires involvement. Whoever makes those pancakes should be Pancake Guru Knight of the Year. Mmm! The St. Joseph s Day Feast March 19 th was another success serving 652 meals. Sam and his crew did another fantastic job. Mmm again! 40 Days for life came to a close and I want to thank all who braved the elements and ridicule during this Blessed Lenten seasonal event. A special thanks to Mike Mallinger and Tom Hruska for their continued management of the program. The Clergy Appreciation Dinner was enjoyed by all in attendance. The Schola, once again, performed a medley of patriotic, Latin and spiritual music. We had 19 Clergy, 70 members and family in attendance. It was suggested we hold the Clergy Appreciation Dinner in April every year to avoid inclement weather and darkness. We will take that under advisement. Catholic Trivial: Symbolizing light, innocence, purity, joy, triumph and glory,?? is the liturgical color of Easter. (a) pink; (b) white;(c) purple; (d) green See answer somewhere in our Newsletter. Grand Knight s Message Our Centennial tickets are for sale at $35/person. Please contact Ron DeGroot for your reservation. This event will be held July 14 th at Sacred Heart Hallen Hall and includes Mass officiated by Archbishop Sartain and will be the speaker, dinner, history presentation, presentation of the decades by Johnnie Lewis and his Band, professional dancers through the decades, and Big Band Music until 1:00 am. The many fund raisers have certainly helped and will continue to help pay for budgeted items. Further need to comp meals has been lowered to 16. Any extra will go toward helping those that cannot afford the $35 ticket price. For tickets please Contact: Ron DeGroot 3420 78 th Ave SE Olympia, WA 98501 (360) 704-8822 Please pray for the repose of the Soul of Father John Scott and Sir Knight Peter Rotar. They will be greatly missed. As we come to the close of our fraternal year let us be thankful to our members for the success they have accomplished to benefit the clergy, sick, disabled and all those that are in need. We have had a VERY successful year and completed all requirements for Star Council. Notice the award says Star Council, not Star Member. You all are to be commended for your help and support of this Council. God Bless you all and a big thank you for the continued support of our council. FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE Dear Brother Sir Knights, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Washington State District Master Karl Hadley, Vice Supreme Master Wayne Hogan, and the entire 4 th Degree team for an outstanding Exemplification performance on Saturday, April 14 th at St. John Bosco Parish in Lakewood. To top off the day s activities, a fine Asian inspired meal, orchestrated by Sir Knight Phil Sheridan and staff, was enjoyed by all. My compliments to the chef. A special thanks to Faithful Navigator Frank Heyke and the members of Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy Assembly 2685 for hosting this fine event. Out of a class of 52 from around the District, 3 men from our assembly were exemplified: Sir Knight Richie Cunningham, Sir Knight Fred Weisdepp, and Sir Knight Jack Winslow. Hearty congratulations to you all for attaining the highest degree of our order. If you missed the opportunity to take advantage of this Exemplification, there are two remaining opportunities for the remainder of this fraternal year. (See coming soon for dates and places.) Just a reminder that the month of May is dedicated to Our Heavenly Mother Mary, the Queen of Angels and Saints. It is only fitting for us as Knights, the defenders of our faith, to pay particular tribute to Mary during this, her special month, by having a small shrine in or around our homes, where we can gather as a family and pray the rosary and other devotionals. This year, as in years past, the children of St. Michael Parish will celebrate Mary s month with a special May Day Crowning at the 9:00am Mass on Friday, May 4 th. This Mass is open to all and I encourage as many Knights and families to attend as possible. Of course we will all remember or own earthly mothers in a special way on Sunday, May 13 th. A reminder also that the annual Memorial Day Mass at Calvary Cemetery will be celebrated by Fr. Jim Lee at 9am on Monday, May 28 th. All Color Corps members are encouraged to participate, as well as our Schola. Breakfast for Sir Knights, Schola, and family members will follow Mass at the Pellegrino home. Please RSVP ASAP. Free will donations will be gratefully accepted to help defray the cost of the food. Special thanks also to Color Corps Commander, Mike Colosi, and all Color Corps members who generously gave of their time, participating in 2 funerals this past month for our dearly departed Brother Sir Knight Dr. Peter Rotar and Father John Scott, OSB. I would also ask a particular remembrance of recently departed Brother Sir Knight and friend, Bernie Tiernan. He and his wife, Florence, have been retired to the Sunshine State for the past several years. Bernie has been a member of our Assembly and Color Corps for many years. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. COMING SOON! 4 TH DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION in Spokane, May 5 th. If you have an interested 3 rd Degree candidate, contact FN Sam Pellegrino for details. ASSEMBLY MEETING at the Hall Thursday, May 24 th. Social 6pm, rosary 7:10pm, business meeting 7:35pm. PRO LIFE NEWS (cont.) 40 DAYS FOR LIFE We Knights were part of the international effort to save physical and spiritual lives. Over 668 moms chose LIFE for their babies and were spared the life-long pain of abortion, during the spring 2012 40 Days for Life Campaign. A BIG SHOUTOUT TO OUR LOCAL LEADERS: Tom Hruska, Director --- Karen Rotter, Assistant Director --- Sunday leader --- Diane Bohlig -- - Monday leader, Fr. Lee Perry --- Tuesday leader, Karen Knuckey, Wednesday leader --- Mike Mallinger, Thursday leader --- Jill Lagergren --- Friday leader, Ed Sauley --- Saturday leader, Dave Gedrose Cardinal Slams Obama Admin on Mandate: We Didn t Ask for Fight During a weekend interview, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, took the Obama administration to task again for its controversial mandate requiring religious employers to pay for birth control and drugs that can cause abortions. Appearing on CBS s Face the Nation, Dolan said We didn t ask for the fight, but we re not going to back away from it. You ve got a dramatic, radical intrusion of a government bureaucracy into the internal life of the church, Dolan said. Our problem is the government is intruding into the life of faith in the church that they shouldn t be doing. I think the public square is impoverished when people might be coerced to put a piece of duct tape over their mouth keeping them from bringing their deepest held convictions to the conversation, he said. Cardinal Dolan said most Catholic institutions self-insure, so they will still have to pay for birth control and abortioncausing drugs. http://www.lifenews.com/2012/04/09/cardinal-slams-obama-admin-on-mandate-we-didnt-ask-for-fight/ Page -8-

Knight of the Month Ed Harrison Congratulations to Ed Harrison, the Knights of Columbus Council 1643 Knight of the Month for the Month of May 2012. The Knight of the Month should be dedicated to the principles of Knighthood and exercise those principles with enthusiasm. Ed is that man. Even his wife says so, having concluded her search for a husband when she found that he was a dedicated Knight!! Ed is an Honorary Lifetime Knight with over 25 years of dedicated service. He is a member of the 4 th Degree, a member of the Honor Guard, and has served with enthusiasm in various councils. Ed is a Naturalized citizen of the United States, having arrived from Malta in 1951 when he was 10 years old. What a bargain the USA and the Knights of Columbus got in that deal! He has been an accountant and is currently retired from PSE. Ed has served the council in many capacities including Financial Secretary, Warden de facto for 1 st Degree ceremonies, and prior to the appearance of our wonderful Schola Choir, was the tender of the music for 1 st Degree ceremonials. Ed is also the go to guy for photographs of Council events and their participants. Without Ed s assistance in this regard, this author would not have been able to put together the Family of the Year nomination for 2012. He is also the backup for the financial secretary in providing condolence plaques for deceased Knights. In short, if there is something that needs done, Ed seems to be there every time! He is a working Knight of the Council, without which the Council could not be the Star Council it is today. Beyond the Council, Ed Harrison is a communicant of St Michaels Parish and is in fact a Eucharistic Minister himself. He also serves with the Society of St Vincent DePaul and both he and his wife perform Adoration weekly. Not only does he do his duty at Adoration but he and his wife are responsible for the wonderful and soothing appearance of the flower bed around the St, Josephs Adoration Chapel. Ed is also a participant in 40 Days for Life, and in his residential community is an emergency coordinator. Ed Harrison is a blessing to Council 1643, his church, his community, and is well deserving of the award of Council 1643 Knight of the Month. Family of the Month Corbett and Elaine Thornton Council 1643, Knights of Columbus is pleased to announce the Family of the Month for May 2012 as the Corbett and Elaine Thornton family. The Family of the Month is a prestigious award whether local, State, or International, because the Knights of Columbus is a family oriented organization and provides every opportunity for a Knight s spouse and children to become involved with Council, Church and Community activities. The Thorntons are a prime example of this dedication to our ethics and actions. Corbett Thornton is a 4 th Degree Knight and is his Assembly s Faithful Scribe. He is also a member of the 4 th Degree Color Corps and participates at funerals, confirmations, and any other activity when the call is put out. He is also a member of the 4 th Degree choir which provides such wonderful music for council events and Degree ceremonials. Corbett is also an organizer of the monthly donut sale at St. Michael Parish where he and Elaine are communicants and have been members of the adult choir for many years. In addition to St. Michael Parish, they are also very active with the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at St George Byzantine Parish. Both Corbett and Elaine have been intimately involved with all facets of many Council activities, including the St Patrick s Day dinner for funding people and families with disabilities. Elaine was solely responsible for writing and producing the invitations, to the recipients of funds, to this great occasion brought about by the very successful Tootsie Roll campaign this year. They were also involved with the set-up, serving, and cleanup for this event as well as for the St Joseph s Day dinner at St. Michael Parish. Other Council activities that they have their hands in are the Centennial Celebration Committee and the Annual Auction for Vocations. It is evident that their concerns run the entire gamut of those events and activities that are near and dear to our council. They are also involved with 40 Days for Life. Finally, Corbett is affectionately known as the onion man because he is the only one who can cut onions for council and church barbeques without crying!! He also flips burgers with quite the flair!! The contribution to the welfare of their council, church and community are mirrored in the rest of their family, including two daughters, Molly and Amy, and Corbett s 102 year old Mother!! For all of the reasons cited above, The Thortons are very deserving of the award of Family of the Month for May 2012 and we heartily congratulate them! Page -10-
