True humility frees us from preoccupation with ourselves, whereas a low self-opinion tends to focus our attention on ourselves. Humility is truth in self-understanding and truth in action. Viewing ourselves honestly, with sober judgment, means seeing ourselves the way God sees us. Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues because it enables us to see and judge the way God sees. Humility helps us to be teachable so we can acquire true knowledge, wisdom and an honest view of reality. It directs our energy, zeal and will, to give ourselves to something greater than ourselves. Humility frees us to love and serve others willingly and selflessly, for their own sake, rather than for our own. Paul the Apostle gives us the greatest example and model of humility in the person of Jesus Christ, who emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and... who humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. The Lord Jesus gives us his heart, the heart of a servant who seeks the good of others and puts their interests first in his care and concern for them. Book of Remembrance Not only on All Souls Day but for the entire month of November, a remembrance book will be placed in the vestibule of the Church in which anyone may write the name of a deceased family member or friend. We will pray for them at each mass during November, the month of All Souls.
November 5, 2017 Page 2 #623 National Vocation Awareness Week National Vocation Awareness Week is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States, dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer, education and our prayers and support for those considering a vocation. Please ask Our Lord for more dedicated holy priests and consecrated men and woman. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community and respond generously to God s gift of a vocation. Holy Cross Men s Group Join us on November 9, at 7:30 PM, our topic will be G.K. Chesterton, Part I The Evangelist How does one engage a culture that is befuddled by Christ and suspicious of the Church? The life and witness of this nineteenth century literary convert shows that the fundamental disposition of effective evangelization is joy, and life in Christ is a day-to-day encounter with an abundant and surprising offer of grace. Please join us, new members are always welcome!
