St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, August 12, 2018 A WORD FROM THE PASTOR Our Parish Pastoral Council, which meets the second Tuesday of every month, will host a special gathering this coming Tuesday, August 14, at 7 PM in the Scullen Room. We have invited all in leadership positions of our various commissions, organizations, and ministries to collaborate on developing a year-long master calendar of all the upcoming meetings, events, and activities of our parish (September 1, 2018 through August 31, 2019). This will help us to coordinate and publicize the many activities in which we will be engaged. The leaders of various groups will be able to discern together how best to schedule what will be going on. We know there will be a few changes which will come up throughout the year. We will certainly be adaptable. However, this master calendar will help us stay focused on our priorities. The calendar will remind us when we need to take first steps toward planning, implementing, and promoting various events. Those in attendance will bring suggested dates for their activities. Where there are possible conflicts, we will resolve these at the session or, if needed, at a follow-up session. Several of our events have come into being because of the input of many of you communicating your hopes and wishes for our becoming a more vital parish community. We want to better live our Parish Mission Statement: We are a welcoming Catholic community, called together by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit to live and share the love of God in our parish and in our daily lives. I encourage each of us to commit this Mission Statement to memory as a guide, reminding us of our deepest parish identity and sense of mission. No one in the world can change Truth. What we can do and should do is to seek truth and to serve it when we have found it. St. Maximilian Kolbe SECOND COLLECTION AUGUST 19 Catholic schools make a profound impact on a child s life. ST. VINCENT de PAUL ALTAR SOCIETY 300 CLUB HISTORY OF 300 CLUB Our first drawing was held on April 4, 1973. The club was established as a way for the Altar Society to help the parish and was started with the approval of Fr. Corrigan. We have only 300 members. The Altar Society provides for the upkeep and beautification of the sanctuary and also participates in parish work. Acting as faithful stewards, we have been saving some of our funds over many years so that we would be able to help when the parish needed to make repairs in our church. As a result, we were able to respond to Father Norm s request by donating $30,000 to the Revitalize, Renew and Rejoice Campaign for renovations in our church. Thank you for your support of the Altar Society each year. As a result of your generosity, we are able to do many things within our parish. During the past year we provided hams for funerals, offered memorial Masses, donated to the food pantry, purchased church entrance rugs, provided flowers for the altar each week and many more things. WE HAVE MANY OPEN NUMBERS IN THE 300 CLUB THIS YEAR. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FILL THEM. See flyer for more details and please call Marilyn McCafferty @330-836-3924 for your lucky number. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Listen to Jesus in today s gospel: Stop murmuring among yourselves! What good does it do? Similarly, Pope Francis invites us to encounter each other with reverence the way Jesus did. If we have a concern, state it honestly, clearly, with affection and at the appropriate time. Constant complaining becomes nagging. We might momentarily feel better, but others could become bitter. ST. HILARY SEEDS OF CHANGE MINISTRY Did you ever wonder if you could help an elementary school-age student with reading or math? During the past 2017-18 school year, 98 volunteers through St. Hilary Seeds of Change Ministry spent over 1644 hours making a difference doing just that. These volunteers shared their gifts and talents on behalf of the 330 students at Helen Arnold CLC (K-Gr 6). Much learning took place, memories were made, friendships blossomed and bonding between student and tutor bloomed and flourished. You, too, could be part of this effort. Just 1-2 hours per week of your time would secure you a spot on this team. There are opportunities for adults, students in grade 7-8, high school students and college students. School-age students are eligible for Service Hours when they tutor. For more information about opportunities which will begin in September, please contact Julie Randall atjulierand62@icloud.com or 330-665-4634. WOMEN S BOARD OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES The Women s Board of Catholic Charities will hold our first meeting of the new year on Friday, September 14th at 9:30am at Blessed Trinity, 300 East Tallmadge Ave, Akron. We currently have about 50 members and we meet once a month from September through May. Our mission statement states that we are committed to living the teachings of Jesus Christ by sharing our labor, time and gifts with our brothers and sister in need. New members are always welcome! Come and see what we are all about! Where I found Truth, There found I my God, Who is the Truth itself. - St. Augustine

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Seven Sunday, August 12, 2018 THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Wednesday, August 15 HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION MASSES: 6:30am, 9am, 5:30pm Today the liturgy invites us to contemplate Mary, taken up body and soul into heaven. By a special privilege, she was enriched by divine grace from the moment of her conception, and Christ, who ascended to the right hand of the Father, opened the doors of his kingdom to her, first among human creatures. Now from heaven, where the Queen of the angels and saints is crowned, the Mother of God and of the Church is close to the Christian people before whom she shines as the new and immaculate woman(who) mediated for the guilt of the first woman.
