May 26, 2013 - Most Holy Trinity page 2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois Teutopolis, Illinois

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Trinity Sunday. The mystery of the Holy Trinity lies at the heart of our Catholic belief. In the Scriptures, God is revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit one God, three Persons. The Divine Communion of Persons stands as a model for us in the present (Church unity, Communion of Saints) and a hope for our future (eternal communion with God). Corpus Christi. June 2 is the feast of the and of Christ, formerly celebrated as the feast of Corpus Christi. As part of the 7:00 a.m. Mass that Sunday, we will have our annual outdoor procession with the Blessed Sacrament. It is custom, as you know, to have the First Communion class walk in the procession. I would like as many of our first communicants to participate as possible. Please mark your calendars accordingly. Thanks! Out of Commission. I ll be seeing Dr. Boyajian at the hospital on May 28 to have a hernia repair done. I ll be out of a commission for a few days. It also means I ll miss the Memorial Day cookout since I ll be on clear liquids all day on the 27th. Your prayers would be appreciated. Congratulations. We congratulate Korey and Laura (Ruholl) Schumacher who were married at SFA on May 25. May God bless their life together with an everdeepening love. Help Needed. As she fights some major medical issues, Loretta Koester has put out a call for help with the Right to Life efforts in our area. As you know, Loretta was named the Effingham Daily News Citizen of the year for her decades-long effort to oppose abortion in the United States. She cannot be expected to carry on this fight by herself, though. Here are some of the things that need to be taken care of: the Right to Life newsletter, a prayer vigil and business meeting on the 3rd Monday of each month, periodic news releases, a January breakfast, a March rummage sale, a prayer day in June, the Crossroad Walkers in July, a booth at the county fair in August, Life Chain in October, and the National Night of Prayer in December. While Loretta has coordinated much of this by herself over the years, we would not expect one person to do it all. Perhaps what we need is a group of persons willing to form a Right to Life Committee to make sure that all these bases are covered. If you are willing to help with these efforts, please contact me immediately. Fr. Thinh. Fr. Thinh stopped by for another visit recently as he dropped off some more boxes. Br. Marc also came through last Saturday to drop off some of his things while helping another friar move to St. Louis. Summer Sunday Liturgical Ministries. People want to be comfortable during the heat of summer, and I understand this. However, I urge our liturgical ministers (ushers, musicians, readers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and servers) to remember that you are performing a formal ministry at a formal ritual. Please dress appropriately. Shorts are not appropriate attire for those who minister at the weekend Masses. And, servers: please, wear shoes or sandals, not flip-flops. Thanks. Tempus Fugit. This coming week will mark the completion of my first full year at St. Francis and St. Rose. A lot has happened, and yet it sometimes feels as if I m just getting started. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Together let us grow into the people and the parish that God envisions us to be. Fourth Grade Servers. We do not schedule servers for the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Saturday. This would be a great time for our youngest servers to get some extra practice. Parents, if your child is willing to serve on Saturday morning, please check with me ahead of time we don t want all the kids showing up at the same time. Thanks! News from Italy. One of the members of the Sacred Heart Province, Friar Michael Perry, has been elected to serve as Minister General of the Franciscan Order. He will be filling out the term of Friar Jose Caballo who was named archbishop and appointed to a new position by Pope Francis. Mike has a variety of international experiences and has been serving as the Vicar General for the past several years. His election was not unexpected. The U.S. bishops have asked all parishes to celebrate June 2 (Feast of the and of Christ) as a day of Eucharistic prayer. We will begin with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at noon and with Benediction at 5:00. At the top of each hour, we will have approximately 15 minutes of common prayer followed by 45 minutes for private prayer and devotions. Each hour will have its own prayer intention or theme: 12:00 Meditation on the Blessed Sacrament 1:00 Prayer for the Sick and Infirm of the Parish (this will include Anointing of the Sick at 1:30) 2:00 Prayer for Vocations to Religious Life and Priesthood 3:00 Prayer for World Peace 4:00 Prayer for a Greater Respect for Human Life Obviously, we don't expect anyone to be present for the entire afternoon. However, I would ask that you make an effort to attend one of the prayer sessions as well as the closing Benediction. Please make sure to bring your children to Benediction since they don't often get a chance to experience that form of prayer. The Most Holy Trinity In the run-up to this Memorial Day weekend you've probably seen veterans out and about holding donation canisters and sporting little paper reproductions of poppies. It was Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae's famous World War I memorial poem, "In Flanders Fields," which inspired the remembrance poppy that is seen at this time of year. While McCrae popularized the red poppy that grew in the cemeteries of France, another man used a different plant to help people remember. Patrick, Apostle to Ireland, used a shamrock, a threepetal leaf to offer a visual explanation of the Holy Trinity, a theological concept that can be difficult to comprehend. Since the leaf is really one, even though it has three lobes, it was a perfect example of the triune God-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons in one God. In this Sunday's Gospel Jesus illuminates the mystery of the Trinity by telling his disciples that the Holy Spirit will guide them to the truth. Jesus indicates that the Holy Spirit shares what is his and he shares what is the Father's. Through centuries of reflection and theological discussion, the church slowly came to perceive the mystery of the Trinity as three persons in one God. While the Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father, all are God. Patrick's shamrock was his attempt to help people gain an insight into what is essentially a mystery beyond our understanding. What we do believe is that this God who is three persons is also pure and undivided love. On this weekend when we honor those who gave the full measure of their devotion by wearing red poppies, we also celebrate the One whose love and devotion to his people is undivided and unending. That One is God, the eternal loving Father, the Son who gave his life for us, and the Spirit that is poured into our hearts. 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc Here & There Chicken and Toast served at the KC Hall every Friday evening 5:30 to 7:30.
