KNIGHT MOVES November 2018 Immaculate Conception Knights of Columbus Council #8951, Port Perry Ontario Best Overall Council in Ontario 1997-98, 2011-12, 2013-14 The Knights were formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. Grand Knight s Message Todd Beck Families and Brother Knights, November is an important month in many ways, starting with the celebration of the 100 th anniversary of the end of World War I. Having had the opportunity to visit the battlefields at Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele; the memorials at Ypres; and the cemeteries at Tyne Cott, Flanders Fields and Bény-sur- Mer, I was able to see first hand the sacrifices made by so many for our sake. We can t take for granted the freedoms we enjoy today so take the time to remember this Remembrance Day by taking part in a memorial celebration or just taking a few moments to reflect. Lest we forget. Also, please plan to attend our annual Mass for Deceased Knights where we can remember our own members and the contributions they made to our parish, council and community. We also have the honour this month of bringing the Icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians to the parish as part of our Marian Icon Prayer program. Please come out to the special Mass on November 13 th to pray for all those suffering persecution. Finally, please support our members participating in the Movember program to raise funds and awareness for men s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. Maybe it is time to make an appointment with your family doctor for a routine check-up. Also this month don t forget to get your flu shot. We want all our members and families to stay healthy! One more thing - please plan to join us on December 8 th for our Christmas Social. If you haven t been able to get out to a meeting or event for a while, please drop by to reconnect with your fellow Brother Knights and their families. Hope to see you there! Vivat Jesus! Chaplain s Message Father Marco Testa Dear Brother Knights, The month of November begins with the Feast of All Saints and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, All Souls Day follows the very next day. We are given to experience in these festivals the communion of saints that we profess and live in the Catholic Church. These are among the most important of our Feasts because they answer the why of our existence. We were created for divine intimacy and for glory: to share the life of God, through sacramental grace here on earth, and in the Beatific vision of Heaven. The splendor of November 1st and the sobriety of November 2nd clearly communicate how important and sober is the work of salvation. The holiness to which we are called requires that we be pure of heart; hence the need for purification or Purgatory. This is our focus on November 2nd. The Roman Martyrology says of All Souls Day: On this day is observed the commemoration of the faithful departed, in which our common and pious Mother the Church, immediately after having endeavoured to celebrate by worthy praise all her children who rejoice in heaven, strives to aid by her powerful intercession with Christ, her Lord and Spouse, all those who still groan in purgatory, so that they may join as soon as possible the inhabitants of the heavenly city. Prayer, penance, sacrifices and almsgiving are of great help to the Holy Souls. In this spirit we can offer prayers for the Holy Souls and give alms in their memory. The Communion of Saints that the Church is includes not only the Saints in Heaven and Holy Souls in Purgatory but also the Church Militant, we here on earth on our pilgrimage of faith towards the Heavenly Jerusalem. Many of our brothers and sisters throughout the world and especially in the Middle East walk this pilgrimage in the midst of severe persecution. We should especially pray for them. The Icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians is visiting the parish of the Durham region during this month. On Tuesday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. we will be celebrating Mass in the presence of this Icon and will pray for those suffering persecution. Holy Rosary is at 6:30 p.m. This Marian Prayer Program is sponsored by the Supreme Council of the Knights. I encourage all the members of our Council to come to this Mass and to pray also for the deceased members of our Council. Devotedly yours in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Fr. Marco Page 2 of 6
District Deputy s Message David Robertson - District 70 Brothers, November is upon us and the summer has gone, the clocks have made their annual retreat to winter and the weather has followed its tradition of cold nights and unpredictable days, so what has all that to do with the Knights of Columbus? Over the past year we have experienced a decline in the number of members attending our monthly general meetings and we can put it down to the great summer weather, the numerous other activities I have to attend, the kids or grandkids schedule of after school adventures or I am just making excuses because I did not join the Knights to attend meetings. When was the last time we organized an event that involved our parish or even the community as a whole where we the Knights had to plan and carry out a function that attracted our own members. Well we have the opportunity this month to show our place in the Church during the special Mass Father Marco has scheduled for Tuesday 13th November 2018 starting at 18:30 with the Rosary followed by Mass at 19:00 with our Honoured guest the Icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians a Marian Prayer Program introduced at the Supreme Convention in Baltimore earlier this year. District 70 is the first in the area to be blessed with this Icon as She makes her way throughout Ontario over the coming year and we are fortunate to have Her from the 13th to the 26th of November, there are prayer booklets, which have to be returned after the prayer service and prayer cards for you to retain so please show the parish how we support the Marian Prayer Program by attending this Mass and praying for the persecuted Christians. May God continue to bless our efforts and show our support for our Remembrance Day parade where we thank those who put their lives on the line so that we can enjoy the freedom we do today, come out and join our Assembly for the march from the library to the Township Office for ceremonies and the laying of the wreaths or in our case crosses in recognition of the Church, the Knights and the Squires. Please support Andy with your prayers as he continues on this important journey. Thank-you to the Brother Knights who completed the semi-annual parish count in October. COMMUNITY Congratulations to our Father Charlie Faleiro Squires circle for conducting a very successful Halloween Food Drive: The Squires delivered flyers to neighbourhoods in advance, and then on Halloween night collected food donations which were then delivered to Operation Scugog. If you can help, please talk to John Brock or email kofc8951@gmail.com and we will coordinate a date to schedule the painting. We will once again be selling Christmas cards, cakes and other Keep Christ in Christmas products. Products will be available to purchase after all weekend Masses from late November up until Christmas. We purchase the Christmas cards from another K of C Council in Toronto, and the Christmas cakes are purchased from the Campaign Life Coalition, so multiple organizations benefit from this initiative. YOU ARE INVITED TO THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SOCIAL!!! You are invited to our annual Christmas Social on Saturday, December 8 th. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Bring the whole family to come out for some fellowship, food, drinks and music to be enjoyed with your fellow Brother Knights and their families. This is a FREE event sponsored by the council so we really hope to see you there! We had so much fun with the Secret Santa gift exchange last year that we will be doing it again this year! What we are asking is that if you wish to participate you bring a wrapped gag gift valued at no more than $10.00 and a $10.00 gift card from one of our local stores (which will be donated to the Angel Tree). Now for the gag gift, you will each be given a ticket and when your number is drawn you get to pick a gift, but hold on it gets better, when the next number is drawn they get to select either the gift you picked or a new one from the pile, and so on and so on till all the tickets have been drawn and everyone has a gift. It makes for a lot of fun! Page 5 of 6
