Volume 21 Issue 9 March 2019 Greetings Brothers! The month of March brings to us Founders Day, and as we think about Fr McGivney starting the Knights of Columbus, let's also consider the parallels with those times that we see today. Doing so helps to keep Fr McGivney's vision fresh. I He was a parish priest in New England, ordained in 1877. At that time, Catholics in America were discriminated against badly. Many who could find jobs, found them in the mills with deplorable working conditions. The workers with families were particularly vulnerable to devastation. From this need was born Fr McGivney's inspiration for the Knights of Columbus that forms the basis of our principals of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. Fr McGivney was young, and close to his younger parishioners. He knew they had the world ahead of them in terms of growth. He knew that time was of the essence, and moved with a purpose. He passed away at the young age of 38 from pneumonia, and has left a legacy that will endure forever. I think that Fr McGivney would look at our council and see some of that spirit he found in the young men he served with. I think he'd be pleased, but I also think he'd want to remind us to move with purpose. He'd want us to roll with the times, and with the needs of our parish. We're trying to do our best to live up to his vision, and we've got a solid basis with which to move forward. Brothers, consider why you've become knights, and how the times we face parallel the times Fr McGivney faced (Catholic persecution). We will host a membership drive later this month with details to follow. Let's get involved and tell our stories! Let's consider, too, that Catholic men need the Knights of Columbus just like we need them. Let's keep Fr McGivney on our minds and his canonization in our prayers. Mary Queen of Angels, pray for us. Vivat Jesus, Scott Lash, GK
Volume 21, Issue 9 March 2019 (Mary Queen of Angels 12384 page 2 Dear Brother Knights, I believe there are only two kinds of people: the Irish and the wanna-be s. I belong to the latter group. Some time ago, I did Ancestry.com testing, to see if maybe I had even a drop of Irish blood. Nope! I enjoyed immensely the three opportunities I had to visit the Emerald Isle. It truly boasts a hundred shades of green in its lushness, evokes a prehistoric beauty in the Burren and is filled with delightful characters. Nothing beats sipping Irish Whisky next to a peat fire! And so my thoughts drift to St. Patrick. The most amazing thing about this great man is that, some years after he escaped the Celts, he went back to the very pagans who enslaved him to preach the love of God and implant the Gospel with resounding success! Compare his actions (and the actions of any great saint) to the idiocy we witness daily in Washington: back-biting, schoolyard-level tweets, obstructionism and out and out hatred of any person who does not share the same political vision. St. Patrick, pray for us! Help us reach out in brotherhood where worldly powers preach hatred, division and self-glory. May Mary, Queen of Angels, keep you and all those you love close to her heart. Please know how important your dues is to our charitable efforts. Your dues represents more than 40% of our income for the year. If at all possible, please send your dues payment in as soon as possible. When the payment is put off, it tends to wind up on that infamous BACK BURNER Since each mailing costs the Council $50 to $60, you can see this becomes counter-productive. Most of all, you need to know that we treasure you as a member of our Council. Regardless of how active you are, you stand with us in support of our church and community. We hope that there comes a time that you can become more active, a time perhaps when your priorities allow more flexibility. We look forward to that time. I will be sending out the KNIGHT ALERT around March 15th. PLEASE get your dues to me before the.
