This is one of the scriptural bases for St. Augustine s doctrine of original sin. ----that since Adam s fall, humans have been marred and scarred by sin and that sin has been passed down to succeeding generations. That sin caused death to enter the human race. That sin caused chaos, destruction, and condemnation around the world. That sin left us hopeless, despondent and afraid. That sin left us rudderless in our efforts to be made right with God. However, Jesus, the Divine Son of God, could do what we could not! He could make the unrighteous righteous! He could make the sinner forgiven! He could restore to grace that which had been damned. And that is what Jesus does for us in his life, death, and resurrection! He gives us the grace to be children of God once more, heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven and forever God s beloved people. He overcomes the world by his Divine Nature and shows us the enormous extent of God s love for each and every one of us! Perhaps we need to reflect on this awesome fact more frequently when we are tempted to sin. Maybe we might find the grace to resist the evil by turning to the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of his Precious Blood that was poured out for us. Maybe we would be able to live the life of baptism more fervently if we recommitted ourselves each day to our baptismal consecration. Such a commitment would help us to live in the Spirit and to progress more steadily by faith to the Kingdom which never ends. It would help us to appreciate the grace given to us through our Lord Jesus Christ to be his brothers and sisters, and heirs to the Kingdom divine! A pastoral pondering as we celebrate our Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
