A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?

A letter from our Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, When we talk about Catholic culture, it is always important to remember that the message of the Gospel truly lived by the faithful penetrates and transforms any culture it encounters. The word culture comes from the Latin cultus, the word for worship. How, who and what we worship determines our culture. At Prince of Peace, I talk a lot about how it is important for us to restore the sacred by allowing a broad experience of our faith and its history to form our day to day lives. That is how we bridge the gap between a merely cultural Catholicism that is reduced to seeing the faith as a mere tribe to belong to do that has its own peculiar customs, and true Catholic culture which renews and restores society. Some of our building of Catholic culture is new and innovative, but much of it is rooted in the ancient wisdom of our faith. 11 November is the Feast of St Martin. The feast was so important at one point that the day was known as Martinmas, like the Nativity is known as Christmas. In an age when the sacred calendar intersected the agricultural calendar, today people planted autumn wheat and slaughtered fattened cattle. It is traditional today to eat goose, since according to legend, Martin, who had been converted to Christ while a soldier in the Roman army, hid in a goose pen when people tried to force him to be consecrated bishop, until the noisy animals alerted his pursuers to their target. Legend also has it that the soldier Martin split his cloak in two on a snowy day to give to a beggar, and had a dream that night that the vagrant was Jesus in disguise. The season of Advent nowadays is only four weeks long, but in many places began as a fast that started the day after Martinmas, which I am sure made that goose taste even better. In Upstate South Carolina, most of us do not run our lives according to farm timetables (although we di have some parishioners who do, and I hope you get to patronize their businesses: they are awesome!). But with the secular holiday season upon us, with jingly jangly bright lights and holiday cheer encroaching even upon Halloween and pre-thanksgiving, maybe it s time to renew Martinmas for our own day. Go all out today and get your goose on, and devise your own Martintide Advent fast. I think the more we let the sacred form our profane, the more we get from it. It s our own Catholic Thanksgiving, followed by a period of intense preparation, not just for Christmas, but for the Second Coming of Christ.
