St. John Vianney Social Justice Ministry News The Social Justice Ministry concluded its winter homemade soup/bread donations for local food pantries in January, February and March of this year. Through the generosity of the St. John s parishioners over 240 quarts of homemade soup were distributed. Your efforts in helping provide nutritious, good tasting soup and bread to people who otherwise would not have that is greatly appreciated! We welcome your continued support! Rice Bowls: please bring your Rice Bowls to church at your next Mass and place them in the gathering area. Our parish will host the book launch of The True Cost of Low Prices: The Violence of Globalization by Jeff Korgen on April 2, 2013 at 7pm. Mr. Korgen is the Executive Director of the Department of Diocesan Planning in the Metuchen Diocese, and the author of several books on Catholic social ministry. His latest book examines the effects of globalization on the earth s poorest and most vulnerable people within the context of scripture and church teaching. The text engages the reader with stories of the women, men, and children living in poverty who have experienced both the promise of the global economy and its troubling outcomes. The book launch will be held in the Choir Loft Meeting Room in the church, and there will be a dessert and coffee reception following Mr. Korgen s presentation. All are invited! School will be closed for Pre-K through Grade 8 from Monday, April 1, through Friday, April 5, for our Easter vacation. School will reopen on Monday, April 8. SJV CHEERLEADING NEWS The Varsity and Biddy teams have wrapped up their cheering season. Varsity, JV and Biddy competed this past weekend March 23 rd at Queen of Peace in North Arlington. The teams were outstanding with their routines and the Judges loved them. Varsity placed 2 nd with Jillian Kornberger as the Outstanding Cheerleader. JV also placed 2 nd and Cassidy Veltre was the Outstanding Cheerleader. Biddy received the award for Best Tumbling and Emily Smietana was their Outstanding Cheerleader. The JV team will finish their season at the Central Jersey All Star competition being held on April 6, 2013. We wish them lots of luck! As the season closes keep posted for Tryout information for the 2013-2014 cheerleading season. Tryouts will be held in May. The 15 th Annual Colonia 5K Race and Chris Jantas Fun Run will take place on Saturday, April 13, here at St. John s. The Fun Run starts at 8:30 AM, and the 5K starts at 9 AM. Applications for both events are available in the gathering area of the church and at the receptionist s desk in school. We need help on the day of the race at the registration table and out on the race course. If you could spare an hour or two to help us, please contact Agnes Bacsik at 732-388-1662. Please come out and cheer on our runners! Just a reminder that due to the race, parts of Inman Avenue will be shut down for a short period of time between 9 AM and 10 AM on the day of the race. Please plan accordingly! YOUTH MINISTRY Happy Easter!! Once again a great big thank you for all those who assisted with and attended our 19th annual "Living Stations of the Cross" There are so many wonderful opportunities moving forward. April is a busy month, and I hope you can come out and join us on a number of fantastic events! On Sunday April 7th is Diocesan Youth day, on Sunday April 14th we have a teen led Mass at St. Cecelia's, on Saturday April 27th is both confirmation and our "Tooling around the Township" local service project. Don't forget that on May 3-5th is our Spring Retreat Adventure weekend, and the permission slips will be due at the meeting on Sunday April 14th. As the spring turns into summer we will be serving soft drinks and Italian ice at the fair, and working on our parish centered service project. I hope you can make time to join us on these amazing events! I look forward to seeing you at the meeting on April 14th from 7:00 to 8:30pm. YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY Great news, we have been gathering a number of young adults to serve at "Tooling around the Township" on Saturday April 27th. At Tooling around the township we will completely transform one property in Woodbridge Township in just one day. The best part is that there are no skills necessary. We will paint, clean, do yard work, etc. until the property has a brand new face. Want to get involved?
