From Our Pastor... Honoring Our Mothers There is a great connection between our celebration this weekend that honors our mothers with our Catholic Church tradition of honoring Mary as the Mother of God and our Mother during the month of May. This year in particular, May 13 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparition of Mary in Fatima, Portugal, to three small children, reminding them of the importance of praying the Rosary. In case you are not familiar with this apparition and its message be sure and look it up online to learn more about it. In honor of this anniversary, I want to encourage all of us to make the time to pray the Rosary more often. If the Rosary is not part of your prayer life maybe start with these simple ways: Pick up the simple how to pray the Rosary sheet on the center table next to the bulletin. For parents and grandparents, check out this website that has creative ways to introduce our children to the Rosary www.thereligionteacher.com/rosary-activities/ For families, start with praying just one Hail Mary or one decade of the Rosary each night after dinner or before bedtime, asking Mary to help your family. The Rosary is prayed together at church each weekend before the 5 PM Mass (4:30) on Saturday and before the 8:30 Mass (8:00) on Sunday mornings. During the month of May place an image of Mary someplace special in your house with flowers or candle to help us remember her example of being faithful to God. Devotion to Mary will ONLY lead you closer to Jesus as her only goal is to help us know her Son and follow him more faithfully. Praying the Rosary and meditating on the Mysteries of Jesus life will certainly bring greater peace to our lives as it helps us remember God s great love for us! Fr. Jim Deiters The Respect Life Committee will be selling roses after every Mass this Mothers Day Weekend. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Lifeline Mission Team that will travel to Seattle this summer to earn an ultrasound machine for Thrive St. Louis. You may honor your deceased mother by placing your rose at our Mary Shrine. Voca on Corner The two pillars to which the Church anchors itself in St. John Bosco's famous dream are the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. My vocation to the priesthood was born from these! My desire for a deeper spiritual life began with encountering Christ in the Eucharist at a Steubenville Youth Conference. While I was discerning entering the seminary, and while I was discerning the priesthood in seminary, I spent many hours in front of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. I also prayed the rosary often and entrusted my vocation to Our Lady s protection and guidance. If you are discerning, go to Our Lord in the Eucharist and Our Lady through the rosary! (As submitted by Father Tobias Letak, ordained to the Priesthood on June 4, 2016 at St. Cecilia s Cathedral in Omaha, NE) Seminarian Education Collection Next weekend our parish will participate in the Seminarian Education Collection. Our diocese is currently blessed with seven seminarians and we are asking for your help in meeting the needs of their formation. The cost for tuition, books, room and board and other expenses is $46,700 per year for each seminarian. Please join these young men on their journey to the priesthood. Your contribution to the Seminarian Education Collection is truly an investment in our faith and the life of the Church here in southern Illinois. Thank you for your prayerful consideration! May 6/7 Tithe: $22,995.65 New Church: $ 5,579.00 Give generously to Him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.
