Page Three May 14, 2017 Happy Mother s Day! A greeting not only for our biological mothers but for all courageous, loving women who in one way or another have stood and become a very significant maternal image that has contributed to the formation of the beautiful persons and Christians that we are now. Our words of gratitude will never capture how much we love you and are much indebted to you. Thank you, moms! Did you know? Mother s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts. (from history.com) Let us now pay tribute to the greatest model of all mothers, Our Blessed Virgin Mary! It is good to be refreshed in knowing Our Mother. Knowing begets loving and loving begets likeness. Who is Mary in the eyes of God, in the words of Scriptures and thus in the Faith of the Church? Favored One: Full of Grace In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. (Luke 1:26-28) Mother of the Lord, Mother of God When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Luke 1:41-43) Mother of All Christians, Mother of the Church Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. (John 19:25-27) Intercessor On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. [And] Jesus said to her, Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servers, Do whatever he tells you. (John 2:1-5) CONCLUSION Mary s function as mother of men (and women) in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. But the Blessed Virgin s salutary influence on men originates not in any inner necessity but in the disposition of God. It flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on his mediation, depends entirely on it and draws all its power from it. It does not hinder in any way the immediate union of the faithful with Christ but on the contrary fosters it. (Lumen Gentium #60) Mary remained the simple handmaid of the Lord so that we can always turn to her as our mother. She is one of us and we are always united with her. After the death of her Son, she continued to live on earth so as to strengthen the apostles in their ministry, to be their mother, until the young Church had taken shape. (Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta)

Page Six St. Peter Claver I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ~ John 14:6 A society without mothers would [be] a society that has lost its heart, lost the feel of home. Because mothers, even at the worst of times, are capable of testifying to tenderness, unconditional self-sacrifice, and the strength of hope. Where there is a mother, there is unity, there is belonging. ~Pope Francis, Homily on the Solemnity of Mary, January 1, 2017 Today we sense the apostles trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that He is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Jesus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord s promise that He is going to His Father s house to prepare a place for us, His chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God s wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us remember that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Grace is not part of consciousness; it is the amount of light in our souls, not knowledge nor reason. When are Children Old Enough to? ( Cuándo tienen los niños edad suficiente para...?), envíe un correo electrónico a bmelendez@la-archdiocese.org o llame al (213) 637-7508. What s the right age? - Many parents find it difficult to determine what responsibilities and privileges are appropriate for children at different ages. Assessing these issues can be complicated further when considering safety concerns, such as how old a child should be to be allowed to use public restrooms alone. Balancing the child s emerging independence with possible risks, such as a predator near the restrooms, can be challenging. Whatever the situation, parents can make sure their children are informed about safety concerns and strategies, while they themselves remain vigilant.
